People want BIGGER games. To make these games they need MORE people. You have to PAY these people. It also takes a LONG time to make these games and you have to PAY them for the effort for LONGER. Simply put, videogames are too BIG!
then why aren't developers giving on that front? games today feel smaller in terms of worthwhile content to dive into and in story writing/gameplay mechanics/level design wise but the assets take up more space, there's more worthless graphical effects that don't improve how the game looks and 10 pajeets doing the work of 1 regular coder, leaving everything unoptimized as frick

As games got better at doing that heavy lifting diegetically you didn't need a phone book anymore.
The other thing manuals did is give you something to do while you waited for the ONE household tv or computer to be freed up.
People started getting more and cheaper tvs and pcs it becomes unecessary again to print a phone book of fluff.
And manuals didn't vanish over night, the just got smaller and thinner until it was just a post card with installation instructions.
And yes, it does cut down on production and distribution, but thats thousands of dollars over the course of production and distribution. Its not going to cut costs enough for the consumer to notice the difference.

Also before CDs became a thing a computer game came on a dozen 3.5" floppies so you needed a frick huge box.
Consoles on the other hand were happy to use smaller boxes to maximize retail space.
The fact is saving money for the consumer is only a goal for a company if they're trying to enter or disrupt a market. Otherwise the goal is to set the highest price point the market will (mostly) accept.

1. Labor costs more. Games are mostly intellectual labor. The cost for cartridges and disks was always negligible compared to paying developers, marketers, publishers, etc. People are expensive, and it's like that in every industry.
2. The market is willing to accept it. Prices will always go as high as consumers are willing to pay without regulatory intervention, as consumers do not collectively bargain and firms always (with a few exceptions that prove the rule) push for as high a price as possible.
Actually the price has gone down. Just that the quality went down too. Remember when they announced the PS3 for $500? Now $500 feels like nothing. PS4 was $400. The PS5 is $500 again but I don't count that because it's some imaginary console with no games that exists solely for scalpers.
OOT would be over $100 if you adjust it for inflation.
