No, it's a mystery why there wasn't any outrage from the public after it was released. Probably the only explanation is that nobody gave two shits about it even at release.
It's alright. The combat is pretty good and the story is decent if very bare-bones. The real issue is that it's super buggy and has serious performance issues, as well as smaller problems like broken pathfinding. This is why you should never play it without mods. Mods don't completely fix it, but they at least make it playable.
It's cool but would be so much better just running something simple like AD&D instead of 3E autism.
It's absolute biggest flaw is the encounter design. You get a few decent encounters, ambushes etc but most combat is boring, just masses of bunched-up Hobgoblins and Bugbears.
>just running something simple like AD&D instead of 3E autism
how would combat oriented game benefit from that?
quite frankly, there is no game in existence that benefited from using AD&D over 3E+
AD&D is boring trash with limited char development
It's genuinely excellent but you really have to like RPGs for real to see the appeal.
ToEE is the only tabletop PC game I played, any other ones that are similar to it and good?
Notably, I liked having many options to choose from on my character, and it being turn based (I didn't like original Baldur's Gate for example).
>ToEE is the only tabletop PC game I played
There was a Keep On the Borderlands module designed in ToEE's engine that is of similar quality. Knights of the Chalice is really the only other thing that comes close. Solasta exists, but its 5e so eh... The early SSI games, Pool and Kyrnn, not

which is garbage, are decent. NWN has some module conversions, but NWN in and of itself is not very close to table top.
It's the only complete Troika game and the best one by far. Arcanum is a brainlet game with no RPG mechanics to speak of, broken braindead gameplay, bad C&C, and hamfisted lore dumps that starts off shitty and completely falls off halfway through. VTMB is a half finished action game with terrible action combat, all the RPG mechanics from the vampire tabletop gutted, and loads of dialogue boxes, which people only like because they are eggs that want to roleplay as a gothic lesbian. ToEE has always produced rivers of salt from Troika "fans" because they don't like RPGs, they like piss easy meme games, and ToEE is a hardcore RPG built around a very classic vanilla RPG module.

It's more of an RPG as far as character building, C&C, and so forth go than your favorite RPG guaranteed, by a lot I might add, and its a recreation of a literal (famous!) tabletop module with tabletop rules to boot.
Probably because the installer is written in Java.
Can I delete java after setup?
I don't know. Probably?
Is this game good anyway?
yeah.. I mean, it's fine. It's rath.... zzZZzzz....
ough... sorry, I fell asleep just thinking about it

So to answer OP question: If you want to play it, download java, intall the mods and play it?
Yes.

Why don't you ask that question to developers?

I like RPGs for real and I hate ToEE.
back in the day me couldn't even stand the demo. it's so incredibly slow.
it's the worst Troika game

The Pathfinder games have even more character options and they both have a turn-based mode.
Oh I should've clarified by character options I meant having a lot of commands in combat for my guys, not customization autism.
They're more limited. No "ready" or "hold" an action type commands in the Pathfinder games, unlike ToEE.
You can't set your team up in PF:KM/Wotr to do something like "fire your arrows at a character as soon as he begins to cast a spell" for example.

Wrong. It's trash and not an RPG. All isometric games, except Fallout, are roll-playing adventure games. Play TTRPGs or frick off.
>Play TTRPGs
That's what ToEE is mimicking THOUGH
It's more RPG than all "RPGs" of the last 15 years.
