Why do jrpg fans that play them “for the story” not read vns? If they don’t care about the gameplay they should engage with a medium that does characters and story better at their lowest than most jrpgs.

They like to pretend that they're gamers.
people who only play JRPGs are generally casuals and can't devote their attention to reading
I used to play jrpgs for the story, lured in by their fun premises, until I realised that pretty much all of them drop the ball. The vast majority of JRPG stories are shit, with Black Souls being perhaps the only exception (haven't finished Xenogears yet)
I now play JRPGs for the gameplay. They're supremely comfy on the Steam Deck
i play jrpgs for the story, i sometimes read vns or books aswell.
>not read vns
>hurr why would you watch a movie for the story when you can just read a book durr xD
Every medium has things that cannot be done in other ones. Gameplay can be used to enhance the story you absolute pleb.
For example when MC gets a powerup it's more impactful when the player gets to actually use it to beat up the bad guy. Or when character gets killed or leaves the party you actually feel their absence through gameplay.
>>hurr why would you watch a movie for the story when you can just read a book durr xD
that's not even close to what he was saying, it's obvious fact that JRPGs are more popular than VNs on sales alone, get some reading comprehension
JRPGs rarely make use of gameplay mechanics to convey the story though.
Most feature a tacked on turn based combat system with random encounters. Battles outside of boss battles have little to no narrative weight. Ans most if not all of the story is told through dialogue and cutscenes instead of gameplay.
Because I don't know anything about the VN world, what is good, where to find them etc?
Vns are a weaker medium in terms of delivering a story. It’s basically a picturebook. Environmental storytelling does not exist, storytelling through gameplay mechanics does not exist, etc. It’s way too direct and does not even have the upside of actual books of hijacking your own imagination for better impact.
Aside from souls, what game does 'notable' environmental storytelling?
Metroid. Metroidvanias in general really
Metroidvania always felt closer to your average VN than a 'game' game though. Hell look at 2hu, those threads are more like VN threads than your average vidya thread.
Idk maybe moronic, I've only played a few of these and never Metroid itself
You ever like a VN so much you just wish you could actually be there and move around a bit with your own agency? Videogames give that
If you play VN "for the story" why not read actual novels? You know, things that do better at their lowest than most VN.
>If you play VN "for the story" why not read actual novels? You know, things that do better at their lowest than most VN.
Because they are a different medium and lack the visual and auditory aspect of VNs.
That's not an equal comparison imo.
Totally agree and VN lacks any consistent and active agency. In any videogame, you're not just picking an option for or self inserting into a character, the character is actively reacting to your every input down to milliseconds. It adds another layer of immersion to the story.
>Play VN
>something happens
>it's just a line of text
>Play JRPG
>something happens
>it's shown on screen
and don't pretend VNs are better written than JRPGs, they're both complete slop for horny japanese NEETS in 95% of cases
Because VNs don't (usually) have expansive worlds, stats, exploration, battles, and builds. JRPG fans don't play them purely for the story, they play them for the story plus the everything else.
they're casuals.
A proper RPG is too much for them as would be a proper VN so they take the watered down worst of both worlds middle ground.
for HardCore Gamers Only, sorry JRPG losers, guess you're not a HardCore Gamer like us Ganker dudes
>offended by casual
lol
dilate
I kneel, hardcore gamer-sama

I do both
