Persona 2 aren't dungeon crawlers they're traditional jrpgs. To answer your question OP, nusona fans hate it because they can't just sit back and watch an LP with voiced cutscenes.
Graphics aren't modern enough and it wasn't ported to the PSP at the end of it's lifecycle. Much like everything before FF7, everyone pretends the games don't exist because there's no 3d models.

In Atlas's defense, from my understanding, they planned to bring EP PSP over despite lackluster sales of IS but there was some kind of programming issue that made the game difficult to translate.

I started with 5, by the end of playing the series Eternal Punishment was my favorite, I wish the series made some attempt to adapt the position based combat.
3 and 4 had the characters moving closer to do melee attacks even with their personas so it looked like personas were attacking enemies physically.
5 just said frick it and had them stand in line while personas posed behind them to attack "physically".

It's just boring and dull. The megaten games on the fricking snes are more engaging.
It's old, these people seem to have an aversion to most things pre-6th gen, and modern Persona fans don't have much interest in playing a traditional JRPG, they're more interested in the social sim aspects and the story.
Consider it a good thing that they stay away from them.
I can't tell if the posts in this thread defending Persona 2 are genuine or not. Please tell me what you found good about the gameplay.
I dislike it because the gameplay is some of the worst in any MegaTen game, I don't know how they managed to make it more of a slog than SMT1 7 years later, but they did, and it makes the whole game a slog, and the story, for all the praise it gets, was just a waste of a creative concept. EP is better, but still not great, and so is P1. The P2 games seem cool when you just know the broad strokes of the game because the rumors becoming reality thing is pretty creative, and while everybody knows about Hitler being in it, it makes the most of that concept even beyond Hitler with the UFO under the city, and Hitler not just being Hitler, but him being a wizard after the Spear of Destiny, it all sounds really fun. In practice it takes too long to even get to that stuff and what you have in the meantime is the lackluster arcs of the main characters and the overly long dungeons with an encounter rate that's far too high and combat that is absolutely braindead between those bits of story. A fun concept and some moments in the story that work isn't enough for me to overlook a game where almost everything else is unremarkable at best, and more often that it's actively annoying.
