yeah, just look at fortnite. for most of its life (ever since the thanos tie-in) it's just known as "the game that has everything in it except homer simpson and the three stooges"

It also pulls in those annoying X was in game A with Y, so X knows Z theory crafters.

Smash did crossovers the best, because it's not some shitty cosplay like in your overwatch pic or a glorified custom model like in Fortnite.
It's a new character with their own moveset/animation/sounds which sells the idea of them being in a crossover (in smash case, a platform fighter)
