That's a problem with bioware's writing in general and not liara in specific, tho: they can't seem to distinguish between "wanting to talk to a character" and "wanting to frick a character"
She has that sorta 'cute nerd' type of personality but in a way that doesn't feel overly pandering. She has a generally likeable, well-rounded personality. I think from a romance standpoint it helps that you can't romance her in the first game, since it gives time to establish a more natural relationship.
Also yes the design helps a lot.
Aside from finding it off-putting how much the devs clearly wanted her to be the favorite, I find her boring, especially in the first game where she wears the uwu cute awkward nerd thing 10x harder than Tali ever does and is instantly on your dick. Bioware really shot themselves in the foot by making it possible to kill your love interest and so making it risky to create content for them. Poor planning for content is a common theme across Mass Effect, imo: I'm convinced it's why we had things like the Salarian breaking the law by scanning the keepers doing so right at the foot of the council, supposedly the most protected place in the Citadel: he was originally somewhere else, but playtesters kept on overlooking the start of their lengthy quest chain so they moved him somewhere you couldn't possibly miss him.
She's clearly very naive and considered immature by her species' standards. It doesn't matter what the character sheet says, you're obviously taking advantage of a minor.

tl;dr Matriarch [Liara's father] was sent by the Thesian government to spy on Liara for some reason that is never actually explained. Shep learns this and goes to bug Liara to meet her dad to which she responds that she knew all along.
You find out in ME3 actually. During those breaks in the Citadel where Liara sits at the cafe on the Presidium you can find her suddenly being the bartender, and Shepard quickly assumes it's too big a coincidence that the asari matriarch bartender who was right outside her office in Illium is now all the way in the Citadel serving right next to her again so she must really be an asari commando. Then she tells you the reason she took the job is because she's Liara's father and Benezia's old lover and actually cares about not hurting her where another commando might have gotten too reckless.
Funniest fricking part is that if you tell Liara she just goes "Yeah I knew already, whatever".
Liara's at her best in ME3 when you can completely forget she's the shadow broker and it changes nothing.

I mean, fitting an archetype isn't inherently a bad thing. It just explains why it's Liaragays and Taligays that clash like this most often. Because the characters are too similar. In more practical terms, Liara's popularity was planned, she got more content because Bioware wanted her to have a big role, while Tali's popularity was unexpected, she got more content because she was unexpectedly popular so Bioware changed plans. Sometimes I'd argue the second case it's actually worse because it might be seen as the writers compromising their vision to cater to fans...
...but we all know Mass Effect never really had an endgame vision and everything was made on the fly anyway so if anything Tali getting more stuff ended up feeling like a natural step.

It's alright. Not nearly as good as the OT. The gameplay is the main draw. It's a pretty adequate third person shooter, and it even includes a jump button. Just don't expect any story beats on the level of ME proper and you won't have a terrible time.

Liara was only person whom i've honestly answered "no way gay" in the end of Bioware's game.
She has that sorta 'cute nerd' type of personality but in a way that doesn't feel overly pandering. She has a generally likeable, well-rounded personality. I think from a romance standpoint it helps that you can't romance her in the first game, since it gives time to establish a more natural relationship.

Poor planning for content is a common theme across Mass Effect, imo: I'm convinced it's why we had things like the Salarian breaking the law by scanning the keepers doing so right at the foot of the council, supposedly the most protected place in the Citadel: he was originally somewhere else, but playtesters kept on overlooking the start of their lengthy quest chain so they moved him somewhere you couldn't possibly miss him.

During those breaks in the Citadel where Liara sits at the cafe on the Presidium you can find her suddenly being the bartender, and Shepard quickly assumes it's too big a coincidence that the asari matriarch bartender who was right outside her office in Illium is now all the way in the Citadel serving right next to her again so she must really be an asari commando. Then she tells you the reason she took the job is because she's Liara's father and Benezia's old lover and actually cares about not hurting her where another commando might have gotten too reckless.
Funniest fricking part is that if you tell Liara she just goes "Yeah I knew already, whatever".

In more practical terms, Liara's popularity was planned, she got more content because Bioware wanted her to have a big role, while Tali's popularity was unexpected, she got more content because she was unexpectedly popular so Bioware changed plans. Sometimes I'd argue the second case it's actually worse because it might be seen as the writers compromising their vision to cater to fans...
...but we all know Mass Effect never really had an endgame vision and everything was made on the fly anyway so if anything Tali getting more stuff ended up feeling like a natural step.

It's alright. Not nearly as good as the OT. The gameplay is the main draw. It's a pretty adequate third person shooter, and it even includes a jump button. Just don't expect any story beats on the level of ME proper and you won't have a terrible time.
