Why do people lump the 90s with the 80s when it comes to culture including video games?

Why do people lump the 90s with the 80s when it comes to culture including video games?

They are two completely different decades in technology, aesthetics, and the whole vibe just like every recent decade is to each other, right?

I find this really the case online though, especially on a place like youtube or reddit.

Just think, the longer time goes on the more people there will be who don't even remember living through the 80s and 90s. Kids today and future kids will only understand the culture of those eras through media from those eras or media referencing those eras and eventually it will all just bleed together.

          This.
90% of the board are post halo kids, why would you assume they can differentiate if something was 10 years or 20 years before they remember pressing their first "ON" switch?

The difference is that for the first time in history you can have an immersive media experience recorded and perfectly preserved in a past era. Imagine watching all the contemporary HD/4K and VR footage in two hundred years.

1993, maybe 1994, is when the 80's ended.

Right, decades don't end culturally on the 0 mark. There is a bleedover until some new technology, event, or just general mood changes it. 60s as we know it wasn't so in the Kennedy years and often gets cited as ending in 1973

80s lasted to 92-94, 90s lasted until either 9/11 or 2003/2004. I'd say the 2000s lasted until 2014 ushered in the activist decade which if we're lucky will end in 2024.

Just think, the longer time goes on the more people there will be who don't even remember living through the 80s and 90s. Kids today and future kids will only understand the culture of those eras through media from those eras or media referencing those eras and eventually it will all just bleed together.

Same as it ever was. Think how Renaissance people conceived of classical antiquity they venerated with their own unique perspective/rehashing style of it.

The very early 90s at best, imo.
The 90s has a huge gap internally, between the early part and the rest.
People somehow remember the whole decade with the strong image of the early 90s, which is actually the tail of the 80s I think.

This is from the mid-late 90s but I find it closer to stuff from the following decades than those from the early part of the same decade.

1984 is when the first arcade games anyone cares about starting coming out.

1988 or so is NES/master system
1992 or so is snes/g enesis
    1996 or so is ps1/n64
and just a smidge past the 90s or so is ps2+

So part of 80s and 90s is a a chapter defined by harry linear arcade style games, birth & maturation of jrpg, and birth & maturation of console style nonlinearity such as zelda, metroid, mario 64, gta.

On the PC chapter it also kind of is the chapter of when gaming was for nerds and the normies didn't pc game.

And its also basically the entire arcade area.

same reason why I had a playstation while kids my age were getting PS2s and even 360s
same reason that I had a 360 when everyone else was playing Xbone and PS4. Same reason I had a PS4 while everyone was buying PS5's (ok that's far fetched but you know what I mean).
When I was a teen I was shocked to learn that the PS4 came out in 2013.
