Why do Resident Evil purest hate that many people (including myself) think that Resident evil 4 is one of the greatest games of all time?
Excellent and endearing characters and dialogue.
Game starts out scary and horrifying and slowly becomes more tolerable and action pact.
Map/level design is extremely polished (perhaps the best thing about the whole game).
Weapons/items box is incredibly satisfying to organize just the way you want it.
Unforgettable dialogue
Immersive atmospheres
Dog maze
Item whoring/collection gathering that is fun rather than a chore
Good atmospheric music

Nobody did back then. The market was oversaturated with survival horror games and the series was on a downward trend before RE4.

Pretty much. RE3 while not bad was starting to feel kinda repetitive, CX and 0 were mediocre at best. Most of the classic-styled sequels aside from remake just weren't good enough anymore.
4 was not a survival horror but it was an amazing action game. I can understand not liking 5 and 6 but that's capcom being moronic and taking things too far.
If you remember RE5 was originally going to be a less over the top game and wasn't going to feature coop, then capcom saw more money in making it coop and the series switched gears into the moronic direction it nearly killed it.
Nowadays the series is doing well, haven't played 8 yet but I enjoyed 7 and Remake 2 more than than I was expecting, specially Remake 2.

I do admit it’s the best. I fricking bought a quest just to play the VR version. And honestly I dont even care about the dialogue changes because I’m in it for the gameplay changes to finally make the 11th playthrough something new other than limiting myself to certain weapons or an egg only run.
Because it was directly responsible for this trend towards goofy, dumb-as-shit plots that have plagued RE games since. Why games like 5 and 6 get shat on for it while 4 gets a pass for having an arguably stupider story than both is beyond me.

If you look at the "evolution" from RE to CODE: Veronica, the only thing they focus on and get better with each title is the combat
The backtracking, story, level design, puzzles and horror get worse with each new title in the series and the only thing that improves is the amount of enemies and combat (no wonder that in each game the number of enemies, weapons and ammunition only increase)
So they thought "we're making games where the horror doesn't scare anymore, and the combat is limited by the fixed camera angle, so let's focus on making a great action game"

I don't hate 4 but as I prefer the more adventure-flavored horror approach to action gauntlets it's not really my strain of RE. Hell of a lot better than 5 or 6, but honestly I think even Revelations 1 was a step in the right direction from 4.

It's literally an 8/10 at best.
It has fantastic gameplay and 2/3rds of the game are well made.

The focus was action, rather than horror. Just remember that scares =/= horror.
Even to this day purists agree that RE4 IS a good game, but they would have preferred more of the same and the tired old bullshit that RE4 "fans" come out with just make them hate the fans rather than the game.

The best game in the series is REmake, then REmake 2, RE2 then RE3, then 4 or 5 depending on whether you have a partner to play with.

They turned literally worst type of a mission into almost entire game. Upgrading weapons is fun and how you need to take care of resources, but it could have been much more if it wasn't all about escorting.
It's barely an escort mission because Ashley isn't a burden and actually gets of the way so you can attack, even when she gets captured you have plenty of time to rescue her
