I've beaten pretty much every NG sans 2004 and vanilla 3 on their hardest difficulties with a very moderate UT usage. You have to be literally moronic to not know how to properly chain UT's in the first game.

i beat 1 and 2 on my series X. I love them, but they have lots of flaws too. Overall though I would consider 1 and 2 to be pretty legendary games, they are just God of War if done by a competent team

NG1 Black VS Sigma is sort of a matter of taste. If you can deal with Rachael levels, it's more just changes to streamline the level and the 'puzzles'. NG2 VS Sigma 2 is a bit more clear cut because they removed a lot of dismemberment and lowered the enemy count.
I think you can get a lock on to work in Ng if it's a soft/toggle sort of like Kh maybe? but I don't know it's up to team ninja to sort that out. I love NG and I just hjope they can take some of the lessons they learned in nioh into the series future. For instance, animating the Block for the bosses so it doesn't feel like they have invisible force fields half the time.
The soft lock-on in NG is perfect the way it is, it just needs some indicator so you know what Ryu is going to attack before you press the button to remove the uncertainty.
The enemy block is a bit weird, I'm not sure if it is something that can be animated because I sometimes get the feeling that they decide to block after you attack based on some conditions rather than anything. The principle I take is "the enemy is always blocking, the enemy is never not blocking, you shouldn't be looking to hit the enemy while they're not blocking, you should be looking to break their block" and you have PLENTY of tools to do that.
For example I love it when they block my flying swallow. Usually a flying swallow has a year long ending lag which I don' think can be canceled at all, so if they block, bouncing off their guard gives you OL frames instead of flying swallow ending lag so you can flying swallow into the spin slash and it just absolutely shreds.
Counter point, Bosses mid animation can be hit by you, and take 0 damage I feel like that's fundamentally bad design there should be a way to communicate if you're allowed to do damage rather than the near rng NG1-2-3 feeel like they use. even if it's calculated during or after the attack adding a simple Raising your sword to block or adding an effect would make the player understand what's going on vs. The game just saying

Yea you nailed it I just don't have a good word for it since it's a very specifically ninja gaiden problem. I can't think of another action game where I've done the "trade hit" and both me and the boss seemed to have walked away with zero damage. I understand it's to prevent Izuna drop spam and Iframe abuse. But to the player it feels like the game is straight up cheating. number one want for NG4 is a consistent ruleset for the block.

While very subtle, Ryu moves his head towards whatever enemy he's targeting. However the actual logic behind the targeting is really fricking simple: Ryu targets the closest, non-prone enemy.

Story wise they're not the worst, but It is kind of unfortunate they're best game story wise is a licensed Square enix tie in.

I played it when I borrowed my friends Xbox. Its nothing special. I think morons only bragged about it because it was literally one of the few reasons to waste money on an Xbox back then along with Gaylo
