Why don't you explain why it isn't a 9? The game is fricking excellent in every aspect. Amazing dungeons, music, combat, art style... This is Atlus best game to date. It is so good they remade Persona 3 to make it more like Persona 5.
Your standards and capability to analyze games is awful. I don't want to waste time to elaborate on everything wrong with the game with someone who starts with "Amazing dungeons". These dungeons have some of the worst levels and puzzles designs I've seen in videogames and I don't want to starts with everything else. It's fine if you had fun of the game but to be so oblivious to think the game is good is crazy.

There's not a single Persona game with good combat, don't kid yourself. It's braindead and boring trash that has less depth and options than your average FF. All the "new" mechanics are dumbed down slop from SMT and earlier Personas designed for turbocasuals. You can't fail negotiations, SL bonuses just break the game and completely remove any aspect of resource management, party building doesn't matter thanks to Atlus still rehashing the shitty One More system so you're pigeon-holed into the same tactics every fighting battle. Anyone who actually likes this garbage battle-loop shit in TBC has mental deficiencies.

When P6 comes out people will start to say it’s great again so they can move on to being contrarian about the newer game. The same thing happened to P4 when that was the most popular game in the series.

Depends what you want from it. If it's the "game" part, you'll be sorely disappointed as the gameplay sucks, and only gets worse the further you get. If you can put up with the gameplay it's phenomenal.

It has nice menus and music. Those are the most outer parts of a game in terms of importance, especially a JRPG. Gameplay and story/characters should come before. It isn't even the best persona game. The dialogue and characters were bland. Dungeons were alright. People mostly like this game for the surface level stuff like flashy menus and jazzy music they saw in youtube/tiktok memes. The new scenario in Royal was alright, but it was hard to go through the the main story again to get to it and they marketed the frick out of Kasumi despite her being irrelevant for 90% of the game.

What's with the samegayging? If you really must know my opinion on the story: It has a strong introduction with the first palace but becomes quite weaker with each new palace. There are still some good moments like the 4th and 6th palace but the story is largely carried by the characters, whom I enjoyed greatly. The Royale inclusions were poorly implemented (really wish the Royale characters were playable from the stat in NG+) but the final palace was great. The antagonist was in the right, with the main cast having a dumb reason to oppose him. Hated the gameplay, which really dragged down my experience (even when on the easiest difficulty and spamming the DLC persona) but the setting, art direction and music more than made up for it.

I completely agree with what you say except about the characters, but I hugely disagree that what you describe makes up for it. The setting is nothing to write home about other than a couple of the palaces (egyptain and space port being the stand outs), and as I said the art direction/style and music should not be large deciders in how a game is treated. Yes when they're good it's nice, but they should never be THE deciding factors.
Again, these are subjective things but the positives far outweigh the negatives. I will say that those palaces were far too long, whilst not being too enjoyable.

I agree that it shouldn't be the deciding factor but I disagree about music not being a large deciding factor. Over the years I learnt that music has the biggest impact on me and my experiences when I think back on games or VNs I've read. Certain tracks can really encapsulate a certain feeling or my feelings at the time of playing/reading something. It's far more important (to me) than you might think.
I certainly didn't go into it for the gameplay. I tried it on the hardest difficulty but turned it down to the easiest difficulty because the gameplay was a slog, ruining my enjoyment of the other, better parts of the game (the non-game parts).

For me its one of the snappier turn based games I've played in awhile, menu navigation is close to being as fast as it was in P2 ps1 or SJ which is nice. I could not in good conscious put 1 and 2 above any of the other ones. Regardless of their writing or atmosphere, they are excruciatingly slow to play
1 and 2 are vastly different in terms of speed and enjoyment of gameplay imo. I did only play the ps1 versions so I can't speak to the psp remakes, but fusion spells and combat in general felt way cooler and faster than combat in 1. Just look at the persona summon animations between 1 and 2 (PS1). In 2 they come out way faster, not to mention the art is better. Probably also helps that you didn't have 5 party members in 2. The battle menus in 2 are not pretty to navigate through but it's overall much more pleasant than 1 which I had to drop 2/3rds through due to how fricking slow and internally convoluted it was.

They should have remade 2 instead of 3 and done the rewrites necessary for the story to actually make sense as a narrative rather than a schizophrenic series of threadbare mini arcs
I didn't find the writing schizophrenic until near the end for obvious reasons, but it at least made sense in-universe. I don't know, I don't remember having any big issues with the narrative. If anything the arcs felt more fleshed out than modern persona where you'll have 1 day of big shit happening with maybe a dungeon then 15 or so days of nothing particularly dramatic.

Played the original back when it released and just started with Royal a few days ago. The new ambush music fricking sucks dick.
Strong, flashy presentation and a snappy flow of gameplay in a genre that normalgays were absolutely convinced had not had any visual nor gameplay evolution since Final Fantasy on the NES.
Also, the social sim element gets more enticing with each release, since the west is now firmly entrenched in the culture of stranger danger. Kids are growing up severely socially stunted thanks to a general absence of unsupervised, unguided interactions with their peers. So this stuff is like catnip to even relatively normal kids now.

I have persona 5 sitting in my steam library for a year, should i give it a go? How good/bad is it?
It's very mediocre for how long it drags on. It doesn't help that the best part of the game is the start and then it gets worse as it goes on. If you have nothing else to play and want to waste 100 hours on a glorified VN, sure, but even then there are actual VNs more worth spending that time playing.
