To serve as a stop-gap for being behind the curve on everyone who stayed.
It's typically not much compared even to most daily login systems, but it's a lot more enticing than basically saying "Better toss in a few hundred to catch up lol"

It's funny because it's optimal to take breaks from Unite. The amount of coins you get for coming back is almost 2 weeks of capped currency.

Very true, it's amazing how people in Ultra/Masters can be worse at macro than literal bots.

All the dailies and weeklies and stamina mechanics and shit in mobile games are designed to be addictive and habit forming
these returnee rewards are a carrot on a stick -- you get a little each day as motivation to keep logging in, with the hope that after a week or so of diong your dailies you'll get back into the habit and become addicted to the game again

Rewards are better for creating habits than punishment, and games have infinite rewards you can give out because they're made of pixels

Mobile game design philosophy means that the later you start the more behind you'll be. The incentive is to get their playerbase to spend money and so once all pre-existing challenges are completed and enough resources are around for people to just build non-focus units for fun, the bar must be raised to keep the treadmill going. This in turn punishes people who take breaks and come back to totally different landscapes, absence rewards soften the blow to keep returning players around as they get their bearings.

It's simple, they give things so you can keep up with the powercreep that's been going on on your absence.
It's just a way of making you not frick off and go to another game.

It's a tactic to keep burnout away. They can dripfeed at a slow pace and milk while keeping you coming back for that hit when you miss your parasocial 3d model friend and their carefully crafted apperance
