Even in Alola, i picked who i thought was the least ugliest only to ditch it was another pokemon.
They're designed to be characters with very specific personalities and occupations now rather than animals. This narrower window of how the starter is perceived by the player means its more likely none of them will click with you
Example, Quaquaval is a flamboyant dancer duck and Meowscarada is a smug magician. If neither of those personalities appeals to you you're pretty much out of luck. A more animalistic looking creature like Swampert or Torterra's behavior is less set in stone and the player has more freedom to imagine the sort of partner they would want

Despite gen 5 being the last gen I liked the starters in, I did not use any of the Gen 5 starters. They all felt weak and underwhelming.
How many cases of "once-good group/mechanic/part of the game suddenly becomes shit after people shat all over Gen 5" are there?
Understandable, the Unova starters are built to be bulky and reliable rather than powerhouses. Not to say other starters aren't tanks, but there's a clear difference in battle philosophy.
That did made it easier to not use starters in future generations though. I would've still used the starters in Gen 6/7 despite liking them less, but Gen 5 began my trend of never using them again. I like it better that way, Lilipup is a much better starter in Unova anyways.

Well, it's not only that the starters are pretty bad, but Lilipup is actually very good, especially with Intimidate. I've taken mine to the E4 in several nuzlockes.

They FRICKED Quaxly so hard man. I love almost everything about Quaquval; Love the typing, Love the stat spread, Love its hidden ability, Love its signature move, love its moveset in general. But Gamefreak had to give it the worst design they could possible think of.
