/tg/ responds with hostility to pretty much anything nowadays, whatever you're shilling isn't special

Non-osr tg considers it OSR and wants it to live in their general. OSR tg doesn't consider it osr (and to be fair, they are right) and they flip the frick out any time it's mentioned. It uses dice outside of the core seven, which really pisses in some folks cereal, and people also get pissed off about the pledge in the beginning of the book, because if you aren't approaching a situation from behind 7 layers of irony obviously you're cringe. On top of the that, they changed the pledge in the newer editions to say something about being inclusive, so all the diet Nazis and larping tradcaths are just double heckin' mad about it.

      >dice outside of the core seven
My local game store wants $50 for a set.
I'd never subject myself or my players to it.

It's also not OSR but OSR-adjacent.
Much like Acks 1 & 2, sword of cepheus, 2E, Knave and Maze rats.
OSR isn't a badge of approval, just a philosophy to be discussed.

        >My local game store wants $50 for a set.
Amazon has them for about 10-12 bucks, plus even if you didn't get the special dice DCC calls for they pretty much all have workarounds for handling them with the traditional D&D 7 dice types

    >le funky dice
    >lol prepare to see your gonzo characters die in the funnel
    >most of the manual is just a clusterfrick of spells charts and sheet
yeah, I can see why this board is so harsh to this rpg

I only see people complaining about the funky dice chain and sometimes the funnel rules (which are entirely optional so I don't see the point). imo not a bad game, nothing new to the table but it does the job.

I played it for a few levels when it first came out and would gladly play it again. Wild and fun.

I believe you, I just leveled up from levels and classes. Idc about osr stuff anymore.

OSR people hate it because it's not an exact replica of AD&D. That's pretty much it.

I'm gonna say what I think about it and not necessarily what most of /tg/ thinks about it, but if your stated goal is to create a rpg system that mimicks classic fantasy

All I know is that I’ve been having a great time with the Dying Earth set. Just managed to scam out the parties last Terces after they spent it on carousing. Even better, the absolutely massive hoard they scored at the end of the last adventure is going to be melted down by a pissed off sandestin to be used as a battle suit; while they’re out on a wild Visp chase.

Stop listening to /osrg/, they're all mostly just johnny-come-lately's anyway and they just theorycraft and don't actually play games.

DCC is great for a level 0 funnel and/or convention game, but it's way too fricking wild to play a campaign with IMO. There's some neat ideas and mechanics that I've stolen for my actual B/X game and it's really entertaining to read.

It's actually one of my favorite RPGs to run for normies because, yes, there are three saves and it is built off of the 3.x D20 system, it's easy to learn and a breeze to run and the dungeons are really well written and fun.

You aren't going to get the Caverns of Thracia from it, but that's not the point.

The spell system sounds fun and wacky on paper but is just bloated and cumbersome as soon as you try to play for more than 2 sessions. Its a convention game, not a campaign game, and conventions are mostly for boomers at this point

You just roll and check the result. I don't know how people overcomplicated this. If you know what your spell should do in theory then all you have to do is roll.

Exactly. Its really friggin simple but the main issue is just that spells are a bit fiddly if you use only the book. My dream setup would be DIY spellbooks with a few pages on the front to put in your learnt spells and their basic info (range, duration, type, shape, etc) and a page number for that spell.
Then everything else can be plastic inserts for spell sheets since a spell basicly takes a whole page anyway. Make your own neat spellbooks!

I just print the pages of the spells my PC actually knows from the DCCRPG pdf and keep those printed pages with me at the table. My spellbook, essentially.

Yeah, DCC just needs a bit of a different approach to get going, spell and patrons especially.

The Crawlers Companion from Purple Sorcerer is also a good way to do it.
Makes me glad I finally got a second screen for my games.

That’s a good idea! Heck, they even did that in the extra Dying Earth boxset. Six different starter groomers with spells based off of some the more famous magicians.

I am not convinced this thread was made in good faith. Plenty of people seem to think DCC is fine, others dislike it and say exactly why, so it's not a mystery. Learn to read threads, TG is not and has never been a monolith.
