I'm not too far into the game (just got the second hideout) but so far she has done literally nothing but nod along and agree with whatever Clive says. Like yeah it's nice that she's not a patronising girlboss or whatever but Jill is too far in the other direction where she's just a pretty plank of wood. She adds literally nothing to any scene because she straight up does not have a personality beyond being vaguely supportive.
It really irks me how close the story in this game got to greatness. You could change 1-2 cutscenes in the game and it would be basically perfect. Still the best we've gotten in years, but man.
I'm kinda meh on some parts of this game but it's turning out to be a real brainworm. Can't stop thinking about the ending and the song, the characters, the zone music like Sanbreque theme, the hideaway.
From what I've experienced i think it needs a good editor to trim the fat and make things a little more coherent.

I thought having "Cid" become a title was fun, because that is sort of what it is between FF games as well. That said it sucked to lose the character, Ralph Ineson really did well
He definitely needed more time to gradually grow into the character he becomes, and Cid was a great instrument in that. But they clearly favored the GoT style of killing off chars earlier than you expect.
Yeah, part of the reason the middle feels slow is because there isn't that bantering presence around for a good chunk. I think they could have had Byron or Joshua come into the story a bit earlier to take the "Cid" spot a bit sooner after his death.
Cid prequel DLC would be nice. Would give us more Benedikta as well, and maybe Barnabas as he decides to go all-in on Ultima (or at least when he reveals that to his Lord Commander)
I think they were kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place with Jill, on one hand you want to have her being uber supportive and understanding in cutscenes, and on the other you want to have her be a bantering travel partner. There would be a major tonal inconsistency in her character if she was ragging on Clive outside of cutscenes. She says shit like "impressive!" sometimes after a combo but I really wonder if they could've done it up more to be more, in your face, I guess.
This is a good chunk of it. I am loathed to use FFXV as a positive example, but they had battle banter to help flesh out the characters.
Persona, Tales, and even fricking Star Ocean do a better job of fleshing out the supporting task and giving everyone a moment to shine outside of sidequests.

I can’t judge final fantasy characters based on fan opinions. Like it’s been nearly two decades and you guys still swap the personalities of Tifa and Aerith based off their job/appearance when it’s supposed to be subverted.

None of the females fared well in the game. Benedikta's backstory with Cid or her encounter with the king of Waluigi are never explored, Annabella ceases to be a character after the prologue, Tarja and Charon never got much of anything and poor Jote got literally cucked by Clive.
Basically Luna but worse because at least Luna only gets a couple minutes of screentime to do anything, Jill is there the ENTIRE TIME and does genuinely nothing.
I wish the writers had went harder on Jill's vengeful streak. Those moments where she confronted Imreann and the seconds leading up to her killing him and giving that pseudo-speech right after Clive destroyed the mothercrystal was one of the good, but very rare, moments she had.

They probably thought that would put some people off a bit. Love interests in these kind of games tend to be as inoffensive as possible, meaning they can't really show traits such as that.
I'd rather have a character that is "offensive" but interesting instead of one that's inoffensive as possible which leads to them having little to zero impact on the player.
Then look for side characters. I suppose the idea is Japs don't like that, they want 'perfect' demure/genki waifus. Jill being a childhood friend doesn't help since that's typically used as a device to establish a love interest without giving her much development.
Considering how many ties Benedikta had via Cid, Barnabas, and Hugo I didn't expect her to just completely get put down so quickly and early into the game

That's true. It doesn't help that even the main story has a lot of fetch quests in it. Even the rewards are shit. That said I think they actually did a better job than most games, which often end up drowning you in quests. There's only a handful of sidequests between major story moments so even I could somehow suffer through them.
Until the end anyway where the game sees fit to throw 10+ quests at you when you're supposed to head to the final battle.
Even if they make DLC it would be pointless. Like XV the game has a lot of structural issues that are impossible to fix with DLC. Because like other anon said it's a flaw of tell not show. If the writer had actually shown even just small glimpses of moments through flashback or something of her having to carry Clive on her back because he couldn't transform then it would be less likely to escape peoples minds and change peoples perception of her being entirely useless.
Clive (and most of the game really) suffers from this too. It's hard to emphasize with his "woe is me for killing thee" attitude when we never anything from his murder slave days.

This is my biggest problem tbh. both Clive and Jill spend so much of the game harping on about how they're monsters and have done such terrible things, but we don't ever get to see them do it or suffer any kind of consequences for it. Feels like a cheap attempt to get you to feel sorry for them without actually having to write stuff.

I don't really get it honestly, just got Shiva and I think Jill has been one of the better FF main heroines. My main complaint against her can also be seen as a compliment in that she's just Tifa Blanco.
The problem with the game is that the characters are too mature. When I say mature I don't mean killing and sex and shit. I mean they are emotionally and intellectually mature.
They don't get into drama like how you usually expect from parties in different FF games. Example, when Clive was getting mad about something and Gav goes, "Calm down and let's think about this for a while." Usually what people will expect is the character to even get madder and lost control. But no, Clive just goes, "Yes, I understand."
Doesn't also help that Clive and Jill seemingly have an innate understanding of each other so much that they don't even have to talk much what they are trying to do anymore. Clive or Jill don't press the issue when one of them wants to do something that is obviously going to harm them. They will protest, but then give way and just say that at the aftermath, they will be there for them.
Garuda was too hot to be wasted on such a half baked character. I don't think she has more than 10 minutes of screentime in my playthrough. Shit sucks. Game just reminds me of XV again from sheer wasted potential. Instead of fleshing out main story shit they forced you the dames and the eastpool seniles in between which I really couldn't give less of a frick about. Garuda felt like a glorified elite mob instead of The Fearsome Eikon of Wind because of how detached she felt from the story and the lore. She's definitely the one Eikon they wished to remove from the game but decided to left in in the end.
I reckon some homosexuals forgot Shiva managed to stalemate Titan too (and killed numerous people in the process) because they played that part a while ago during the demo kek

Amusingly enough that's exactly what the game does right when you're supposed to head to the final boss. For most of the game they are better spaced out but it doesn't change the fact that they're massively unfun. And there is a lot of fast traveling across the map involved. Without the PS5's SSD this game would be an unbearable nightmare to play.
I can't believe I would say this but the main couple in tales of arise was much better than in this game. honestly I'm not even sure if FFXVI is better than tales of arise in the first place. the only things that are actually better in FFXVI are the graphics and the boss battles.

This scene was weird as frick. It did actually feel like Joshua was just jealous of Clive hooking up with Jill. But then Joshua has no ground to stand on, since he never tried to rescue either of them and he didn't even smash Jote.

Joshua was simply mad because Clive is trying to save the world on his own, wanting to shoulder all of their burdens while coddling them at the same time, which is why he said he will not give him phoenix. Jill is just an excuse for that and has very little to do with the whole scene otherwise. And let's be honest, if Clive were to ask Jill for Shiva, it would indeed be a pretty dick move on his part. Clive getting phoenix on itself was never the problem, the whole notion that Ultima needs Clive to have every dominant is wrong since he tried to take him over earlier already, it would just be better if he did, but it's hardly a must.
Joshua simply doesn't want to give phoenix because then he would have to take a backseat in the fighting and live Clive to carry all their burdens on his own, like Jill did.
In retrospect Jill was right since Clive needed to have all the power on his own to face Ultima, but of course Joshua wouldn't want to put this kind of pressure on Clive alone.

The game is tonally very inconsistent. The grim tone from the beginning fades very quickly. While I don't have the problem with the story getting more hopeful it often goes overboard and eventually turns into straight-up shounen shit. Jill's and Clive's almost kiss getting interrupted was ripped straight out of rom-com garbage and Byron is too much of a clown in general.

He definitely needed more time to gradually grow into the character he becomes, and Cid was a great instrument in that. But they clearly favored the GoT style of killing off chars earlier than you expect.
Yeah, part of the reason the middle feels slow is because there isn't that bantering presence around for a good chunk. I think they could have had Byron or Joshua come into the story a bit earlier to take the "Cid" spot a bit sooner after his death.
Cid prequel DLC would be nice. Would give us more Benedikta as well, and maybe Barnabas as he decides to go all-in on Ultima (or at least when he reveals that to his Lord Commander)

She says shit like "impressive!" sometimes after a combo but I really wonder if they could've done it up more to be more, in your face, I guess.

She has reasons for refraining to use her power but the writer could have easily remedied that. Even then, Joshua is also in a terrible state and even he gets off his ass and helps. Even ignoring her wasted potential as an asset the game doesn't really do anything with her as a character She feels out of place, both in-game and in-universe. She's a third wheel in every cutscene she's in, her reunion with Joshua and Byron feels like an afterthought and no one really seems to care for her. The game doesn't really bother to give her much backstory or goals and desires and she's always alone.
She was taken from her real home and never quit fit in even in her adopted one. She's so thirsty for companionship that she basically throws herself at Clive the moment they meet again despite them barely knowing each other as adults. They probably thought that would put some people off a bit. Love interests in these kind of games tend to be as inoffensive as possible, meaning they can't really show traits such as that.
I'd rather have a character that is "offensive" but interesting instead of one that's inoffensive as possible which leads to them having little to zero impact on the player.
Then look for side characters. I suppose the idea is Japs don't like that, they want 'perfect' demure/genki waifus. Jill being a childhood friend doesn't help since that's typically used as a device to establish a love interest without giving her much development.

That said I think they actually did a better job than most games, which often end up drowning you in quests. There's only a handful of sidequests between major story moments so even I could somehow suffer through them.
Until the end anyway where the game sees fit to throw 10+ quests at you when you're supposed to head to the final battle.
I think it was stupid there wasn't any scene of Barnabas and Cid interacting at all, not even a flashback.

Because like other anon said it's a flaw of tell not show. If the writer had actually shown even just small glimpses of moments through flashback or something of her having to carry Clive on her back because he couldn't transform then it would be less likely to escape peoples minds and change peoples perception of her being entirely useless.

Clive (and most of the game really) suffers from this too. It's hard to emphasize with his "woe is me for killing thee" attitude when we never anything from his murder slave days.

"She couldn't do it because of (in-game story reason)" is irrelevant because the writers could just make up any excuse if they wanted to, it's not like the rest of the game is very consistent. For example the only reason the Phoenix Blessing exists is because they wanted the player to have more abilities from the start.
Jill stayed back to give us a hopeful ending. If she had died there along with Joshua Clive would've gone batshit insane and lost everything to Ultima in a heartbeat.

The problem with the game is that the characters are too mature. When I say mature I don't mean killing and sex and shit. I mean they are emotionally and intellectually mature.
They don't get into drama like how you usually expect from parties in different FF games. Example, when Clive was getting mad about something and Gav goes, "Calm down and let's think about this for a while." Usually what people will expect is the character to even get madder and lost control. But no, Clive just goes, "Yes, I understand."
Doesn't also help that Clive and Jill seemingly have an innate understanding of each other so much that they don't even have to talk much what they are trying to do anymore. Clive or Jill don't press the issue when one of them wants to do something that is obviously going to harm them. They will protest, but then give way and just say that at the aftermath, they will be there for them.

Garuda felt like a glorified elite mob instead of The Fearsome Eikon of Wind because of how detached she felt from the story and the lore. Actually, no. Because DMC5 has a problem of letting you juggle Vergil outside of DT, so he's basically a sandbag half the time. DMC5 bosses are no where near as good as XVI, and I really liked both games. It's weird because DMC3 correctly understood that you shouldn't be able to juggle Vergil

Jill, Benedickta, Jote, every woman in this game does nothing. Jote's description is even like "Bro watch out she's super dangerous actually" but if the game didn't TELL me that I would think she hasn't hurt a single person in her entire life.
I doubt FF16's writers hate women or anything, it's likely more this happened because the game isn't centered around a party but really it's just the Clive and Joshua show and everyone else is along for the ride. Thus everyone else ends up super forgettable.
I miss when FF girls weren't so boring and actually felt important instead of being there just to look pretty. We had actual good female characters like Tifa, Aerith, Rinoa, Garnet and Yuna in successive streak. What the frick went so wrong.

Amusingly enough that's exactly what the game does right when you're supposed to head to the final boss. For most of the game they are better spaced out but it doesn't change the fact that they're massively unfun. And there is a lot of fast traveling across the map involved. Without the PS5's SSD this game would be an unbearable nightmare to play.
I can't believe I would say this but the main couple in tales of arise was much better than in this game. honestly I'm not even sure if FFXVI is better than tales of arise in the first place. the only things that are actually better in FFXVI are the graphics and the boss battles.

I don't jsut mean their stories, but Shionne had so much personality, she was sassy, was obsessed with food, liked laughing at stupid things, the classic tales sketches gave her a lot of characterization. and her story of being a frigid b***h fit well with her situation and allowed for some good development over time.
tales of arise is also shit in many ways but I feel it had a lot more potential and better ideas at its core than FFXVI

This scene was weird as frick. It did actually feel like Joshua was just jealous of Clive hooking up with Jill. But then Joshua has no ground to stand on, since he never tried to rescue either of them and he didn't even smash Jote.
It's kinda upsetting so many of you people misunderstood that scene. Joshua was simply mad because Clive is trying to save the world on his own, wanting to shoulder all of their burdens while coddling them at the same time, which is why he said he will not give him phoenix. Jill is just an excuse for that and has very little to do with the whole scene otherwise. And let's be honest, if Clive were to ask Jill for Shiva, it would indeed be a pretty dick move on his part. Putting he putting Jill on the spot and forcing her to make a really hard choice she really shouldn't have to make, of course Joshua has no idea how it went down though.
The funniest part is Joshua still gives him phoenix after dying like a dumb b***h played like a fiddle by Ultima.

Clive getting phoenix on itself was never the problem, the whole notion that Ultima needs Clive to have every dominant is wrong since he tried to take him over earlier already, it would just be better if he did, but it's hardly a must.
Joshua simply doesn't want to give phoenix because then he would have to take a backseat in the fighting and live Clive to carry all their burdens on his own, like Jill did.
In retrospect Jill was right since Clive needed to have all the power on his own to face Ultima, but of course Joshua wouldn't want to put this kind of pressure on Clive alone.
Anon, I know what the writers meant by the scene. It just felt completely logical for a guy who doesn't burn out when using eikons to gather every other eikon onto himself and use it to save the world.
I get the feelings part, it's just to me feelings mater a lot less when the stakes are that high.

The game is tonally very inconsistent. The grim tone from the beginning fades very quickly. While I don't have the problem with the story getting more hopeful it often goes overboard and eventually turns into straight-up shounen shit. Jill's and Clive's almost kiss getting interrupted was ripped straight out of rom-com garbage and Byron is too much of a clown in general.
