The combat mechanics are obviously the weakest link but it makes up for that in terms of enemy designs, atmosphere, puzzle mechanics, and soundtrack. I don't think this game is immune to criticism but people love to shit on it for cool kid points.

Couldn't agree less, 23 and played the series just this year, thought SH2 was excellent. Overall I would say SH1 was my favorite but I enjoyed my time with SH1-4 and did a few playthroughs of all of them, great series and it's sad to me it couldn't truly continue after SH4.

You can go to Youtube and write "Alien Isolation is the best horror game in the history" wait some days and the first responding will be one of those SH2gays.

SH2 came out so early in the ps2's lifetime that it's an honorary launch title, which probably just made it the entry with the most traction. This turns it into the most successful game in the franchise on paper at least. 4 got the most hate out of any of the SHs and wasn't even supposed to be a SH game at first, just set in the next town over as an easter egg. I think those two factors led to every game since being nothing but ass because they tried to correct course by just mindlessly chasing after a "Silent Hill 2: II" to print more money for them. Not understanding that SH1 was praised by everyone who played it on ps1, but that wasn't a hell of a lot of people total. SH2 was just the only real entry point in the series at that time and the hot new PS2 graphics plus the word of mouth from the 1st game gave it a boost.

Obviously by today's standards two million would seem like nothing but back then a PS1 game got a "Greatest Hits" label if it even sold 250,000 copies, most game weren't expected to do even that well. Honestly SH2 sold moderately well too, sales seem to have been about 1 million, but I guess Konami was pissed it was not remotely as high which is supposedly a reason they pushed SH3 to be a sequel to Sh1. It's funny to think now but looking at conversation about SH2 around release a lot of people seem to have thought it shoudl have continued off of SH1, probably similar to how people felt when they finally played MGS2 but not as meta or extreme.

1 was by far the most successful game in the series. 1-4 combined only sold around 5 million units and 1 accounts for about half that total.
