I don't have to try. I tried to play USUM and quit around the end of the 2nd island because of how much of a slog it felt. SM with a skip function slapped on would've made for a far better '3rd version' than USUM.

usum butchered the story
They're too new to get nostalgia bias, and too old to have blind hype praise, so a lot of the only people who actually talk about Alola are the genwar addicts who haven't even played them and only mention gen 7 specifically because they have a slightly better chance of getting away with posting blatant lies when they try to defend worse games.
They can't use something like gen 4 or BW/2 because if they lie about those even casual fans will notice, and actual criticism doesn't get (you)s, but they also can't use gen 8 or 9 because those are actually controversial and won't be defended as strongly.
Gen 7 is the only option when they're desperate because the games are good enough for a comparison to make something else look better, but not popular enough for how biased their comparisons are to be obvious.
The only option currently is to wait. Either the genwar addicts will decide something else is an easier target, or Alola praise will eventually grow enough to make their spam noticably wrong.

If you want to be objective it had the least new additions with most changes either being story related without adding any new dungeons or just other minor things like catching totem sized pokemon.
Distortion World was bigger than Ultra City
and it had a better bossfight at the end
