at the risk of sounding like coping, it's usually the shiftiness of things that makes it soulful. clean and flawless execution in any art can feel soulless.
>t's usually the shiftiness of things that makes it soulful. clean and flawless execution in any art can feel soulless.
Nu-Pokémon should be full of soul then
I dont think is nostalgia, old pixel graphics age way better than 3D.
I played nes and snes as much as any kid, but didn't get INTO videogames until psone gen.
If I had to be nostalgic it would have to do for something from them, but frick no.
When you see a psone game you think "wow, that looks like shit, I cant believe how I thought that looked good back then"
While when you see a nes game you still think it looks fine even now. I guess because graphics are more of a conceptual thing, you dont expect them to look good
I wouldn't go as far as to say the NES, like it's good enough, but I can easily go and look at a decent SNES game and it hasn't aged a bit, it still looks just as crisp as it did back then.
The same is sort of true for video game music. Sure it's improved over time in terms of technological limitations, but SNES can generate legitimate music that isn't really held back in a big way.
Came to the thread to say this.
Lycanroc looks great.
Goodra looks fine.
Dudunsparce is Dudunpsarce.
Pawmot and Orthworm are borderline acceptable at best.
The starters and Nemona need full redesigns.
Skeledirge looks fine, the fire coming out of its mouth looking like fire and not a shitty clown wig help it out immensely.
Lycanroc could stand to be a couple shades lighter.
>LET'S DUPLICATE DUNSPARCE'S BODY PARTS AND PRETEND WE CREATED A NEW POKEMON!
cross gen evos that didn't debut until after gen 4 were a horrendous mistake
gen 4 has froslass, electivire, mismagius, porygon-z, honchkrow, etc. all of which are good designs. those are way better than trash like wyrdeer, obstagoon, dudunsparce, annihilape, and ursaluna
>froslass,
Ass, killed the concept. >electivire,
One of the worst and it doesn't even look like a pokemon. >mismagius,
One of the worst, it just stretched it out and slapped on a hat. >porygon-z,
Worse than a recolor they just rearranged porygon 2. >honchkrow, etc.
Mafia theme out of literally nowhere.
The trainer's face should be more distinct and easier to read, even if it makes the body smaller. GSC that uses slightly chibi proportions for expressiveness.
Those sprites are shit but the originals look good because the colour limit forced them to be creative with shading so everything is striking. Also they were the only decently animated sprites we ever got, emerald/gen 4 are 2 frames while bw look like shitty tweens.
none of this is done right.
- the pokemon sprites are too complex; trying to capture nu-gen design philosophy 1:1 in GBC sprites is not exactly uncanny valley, but cant think of a better way to put it. theyre obviously out of place
- trainer proportions, as someone else already said itt, are wrong. again a consequence of trying to 1:1 but in this case the bigger issue is failing to understand G1/2 sprite principles
- music is the same thing. again trying to 1:1 it and it doesnt work. if you heard that song while playing GSC you'd think something was wrong with your game cart
Those geniunely look like shit and don't respect that slightly chibified artstyle gen 2 sprites for. Compare that Goodra with Dragonite's sprite.

It’s those GameBoy color palettes
your nostalgia bias. boomers think NES graphics are SOVL even though they objectively look like shit
And yet there are zoomers who make this stuff for Gen 2 specifically.

Nu-Pokémon should be full of soul then
i meant shittiness in execution, not design
I'm a zoomer who grew up with the DS era games but even I think Crystal graphics are comfy and aesthetic.
I fricking hate Milotic and I still think this one looks great
This is shit
This is good
Can you recommend other sprite artists? I only know dora_mentaiko.
No. You're just a homosexual.
>T. Shit eater
They do look like shit compared to non-gamefreak games lol
>1 (ONE) reply before the muh nostalgia homosexual decided to shit up the thread
>boomers think NES graphics are SOVL
It's almost entirely zoomers who think this.

Pixel art hasn't aged better. PS1 and N64 3D looked ass even twenty years ago.
I wrote
and i started with gens 4 and 3. The nostalgia accusations have always been some poor shill defense.
Jesus, even in the most soulful sprite style modern pokemon still look like shit.

Why did they make Snoodra's tail so thin? Looks fricked up
Because it's retro, and retro automatically equals sovl to you people
>LET'S DUPLICATE DUNSPARCE'S BODY PARTS AND PRETEND WE CREATED A NEW POKEMON!
cross gen evos that didn't debut until after gen 4 were a horrendous mistake
You're saying that like gen 4 didn't kill the concept for about 16 years because they were abject trash.
gen 6 had a cross gen evo and most cross gen evos in 4 are fine
Eeveelutions don't count and you know it.
Until SV the only crossgens were for regional variants.
>it doesn't count because.....i say so
nope gen 6 had a cross gen evo

>she thinks Kingambit and Annihilape suck
isn't it embarrassing posting shit takes like that?
you're the one defending era trash so no. if anything you should be embarrassed
Good spritework. Fire Emblem has the same effect with the GBA games
The trainer's face should be more distinct and easier to read, even if it makes the body smaller. GSC that uses slightly chibi proportions for expressiveness.
The starters really don't fit in
Your imagination fills the gaps, unlike with 3d models what you have is what you got
Skeledirge still looks like shit
NOthing changed then
seething furgay
new meme face
Those sprites are shit but the originals look good because the colour limit forced them to be creative with shading so everything is striking. Also they were the only decently animated sprites we ever got, emerald/gen 4 are 2 frames while bw look like shitty tweens.
I still can't believe they gave mewtwo the mr. mime sprite in gen 2. feels deeply wrong
Those geniunely look like shit and don't respect that slightly chibified artstyle gen 2 sprites for. Compare that Goodra with Dragonite's sprite.
I hate dudunsparce so fricking much

I once again ask you for other sprite artists.
Because gen 2 has the most soulful sprites and animations
