They're boring Iron Warriors. There's not much to do with them. Hypothetically they're a great legion to explore concepts of loss and how it has become a twisted mockery of their original themes and their sire's intentions but autism means the only people who like them are lame morons who don't get that part and ge ahead of themselves with the flesh is weak.

What even is the theme of the Iron Hands? Ultras are Romans, White Scars are Mongols, Space Wolves are Norse etc. What are the Iron Hands supposed to be?

They're just not likeable, they're mentally ill and hateful, and not in a funny or interesting way, its just stupid. If you want to play body horror murderous buttholes, you just play CSM, at least they have some motivation and character building over these glorified servitors.

Black Templars are cool, Blood Angels are cool, Dark angels are cool. 40k Ultramarines are boring, but so are the Black Legion.

Nothing whatsoever until after being wiped out on istvaan.
Meduson (who they murder) tries to assassinate horus, and cuts aximand's face off.
Mor (butthole) had a campaign invented for him where he blows up the world eater's de-facto homeworld, just comes across as trying too hard though.
Wayland+Co annoy perty+fulgrim in AE, and then all die off. One of them kills marius (the first noisemarine) i guess.
Some of the other ones use forbidden shit to create cyborg zombies.

My favorite chapter personally. I like that its a legion of the mentally deranged and that they're still coping so hard that they'd rather give up the ability to process emotions and give up agency than come to terms with the loss of their primarch. They're complete nutjobs, I love it. I also think they look sick.

I feel bad for the actual IH fans that were around in 8th. Couldn't play their favorite chapter without getting accused of being a WAACgay.

They are just sadboiz really. Their mechanical augmentations are a visual representation of ferrus' failure and their desire to relinquish their capability to make a decision that isn't based on cold mechanical logic partially because they consider that one of the reasons why they suffered tremendous defeat during the HH. They pretty much still blame themselves for ferrus' death and the defeats they suffered after the fact. I guess they think if they no longer feel emotion then they can continue to make pragmatic decisions and won't be routed by the sudden death of a leader during battle. There could be a decent story on the human condition regarding them but GW will never pursue this.

Problem is that their successor chapters are both less autistic, due to not having quite so many mental health issues, and have a more interesting colour scheme (especially brazen claws).

          >brazen claws
Thought I was the only one who liked them, really like the quartered design, colors and cyborgs. haven't been able to afford an army, but I was planning to make them My Dudes since I couldn't find much lore on them aside from the destroyed knight home world and the eye of terror invasion they realized didn't do anything. do they have any books?

            Anonymous

Dont think they do, the iron hands barely have any as it is, they had one deathwatch guy in the 2nd iron hands book, maybe another in a different deathwatch story. They seem to be significantly less mentally ill/flesh hating than the iron hands, more like 30k iron hands, just violent autists. Personally i think their colour scheme would suit the ultramarines a lot more, but it gives the iron hands something at least.

              >more like 30k iron hands
HH Iron Hands were frequently characterized as insane. Explicitly so, the rulebooks flat out say they're psychotic and violently insane.

GW did make an story about the IH healing a bit and finding a better balance between their autism and self hate in 40k. Read about Kardan Stronos and his book series (The Eye of Medusa, The Voice of Mars)
Sadly the third book of the trilogy with the conclusion has not been released yet.

Bionics are objectively better than their organic counterparts though. If anything it would make marines more effective if they all followed the Iron Hand method, but that would be too expensive.

because GW wrote themself in to a corner with their lore. They are probably the only marines with actual tech resurrection. all they could do is kill off stronos and then let ferrus come back, but that would be crippling them again story telling wise since stronos is their best written character.

Aren't the iron hands augmented with extremely advanced technology that isn't in use anywhere else due to admech secrecy? If this is the case, can we not make the assumption that these mechanical augmentations are just as good if not better than the typical biological enhancements of regular space marines?

I don't hate the IH or anything but God damn I often forget they're a first founding chapter since they're so boring. Being an IH player must be suffering.

Honestly the biggest limitation on how good implants can be is how good the underlying flesh which supports it is. A normal human wouldn't be able to use an artificer bionic limb with 2000lbs of lifting strength because they would break their spine. Astartes are different. Although, the many of the most dangerous and powerful magos of the admech would smoke a space marine in a fight. At that point, there's very little human left, and bizzare secondary psychological effects begin to set in. There's that bit in Helsreach where Forgemaster Jurisian fights the Ordinatus Armageddon's keeper, and he gets torn up pretty good. He mentions after the fight that had the keeper not been completely unmaintained and a shadow of its former self, he could have easily been mortally wounded.

I think it's hard to write them in a sympathetic role considering they are massive buttholes.

my biggest issue with them is that their color scheme sucks. It's the third major marine chapter that has black as their color scheme. I know Iron Warriors already took Iron, but at least give them some kind of dirty brown or something.

They are absolutely redundant. We already have the far superior Iron Warriors AND the Mechanicum. There is no reason for the IH to exist.
