I've been running kobold locally with 16gb and it seems alright but still pretty dumb a lot of the time and usually requires a lot of regenerating or just rewriting (which I'm sure is not entirely the fault of the AI and more with the settings/cards/my own writing and general ineptitude)

Not technically knowledgeable enough to properly answer that, but running LLM requires alot of processing power, so GPU's are needed to run them. LLM predicts text, so in order to predicts text it needs a massive amount of training data to base it off. All this data must be accessible to the AI at all times. So it must be loaded into VRAM. It is possible to run some LM's on CPU, but they are slow as frick and has shit training data and just isn't worth using. Basically, text is fricking difficult to generate.

I forgot to mention that all of the wikis for their games are inaccurate and/or just flat out missing content constantly. This wouldn't be a problem in other games because you can just play them and figure it out through trial and error but I really don't want to put effort into reading every line of text and save scumming every fricking item to figure out what will and won't turn me into a furgay demon or get me addicted or make my character horny or whatever. I never feel like I have autonomy in these games anymore.

Why does a text based model need VRAM?
Not technically knowledgeable enough to properly answer that, but running LLM requires alot of processing power, so GPU's are needed to run them. LLM predicts text, so in order to predicts text it needs a massive amount of training data to base it off. All this data must be accessible to the AI at all times. So it must be loaded into VRAM. It is possible to run some LM's on CPU, but they are slow as frick and has shit training data and just isn't worth using. Basically, text is fricking difficult to generate.
