Once Wrath ended the WC3 setup, and they ran out of Dragonlance to steal from with Cataclysm, it was all asspulls from then on out.
I liked Pandaria and Legion. But things have gone wrong since Metzen and most of the original creatives left. The company is/was left with blue haired weirdos, breast milk stealers, Metzens stupid daughter who got Sylvannas's tummy censored, Activision bullshit, troony dragons....
I highly suspect Warlords of Draenor was "never" intended to be have much content. Project Titan "should" have launched roughly around then, being Blizzard's next-gen MMO. Players wouldn't have enough time for two MMO's, so that's why WoD had so much mobile game check-in stuff and lack of content. They assumed people would play Project titan, and check in on WoW maybe once a day or a couple times a week.
....but Titan got canned because they "couldn't" find the fun, leaving WoD holding the player bag and attention.
In any case, WoD's comic book multiverse thing was moronic anyways.
wod was supposed to only last 1 year. bobby kotick wanted yearly wow expansions like how call of duty had yearly sequels. they hired a ton of new devs to make wod, but all the senior devs kept getting pulled away to help project titan, so the new devs were barely trained and had no guidance
wod was also supposed to launch at the same time as the warcraft movie (and future movie+expansion combos would potentially exist) but wods development was so slow that it released like 2 years after the movie lol

didn't the tail end of wod also get cannibalized in order to make legion? cause legion had a frick ton of solo instanced content compared to every other expansion, but it took like 13 months to launch it after hellfire citadel's release
its hard to say because a ton of content was scrapped before wod even launched. capital cities, questlines, extra islands, different garrisons, a train connecting all the zones, were all scrapped. also making garrison server tech actually work was apparently a massive feat of engineering, so future expansions probably use the garrison baseline tech to add content
wod was going to be highmaul, brf, shattrath raid, and hellfire citadel. the shattrath raid assets got added to hellfire. gorfiend, socrethar, and tyrant velhari were all supposed to be in shat
That's not what happened at all though. Overwatch released well after WoD and was announced as Overwatch before WoD's release. There was no "Project Titan" at all during WoD's development.
What actually happened was Garrisons and Ashran caused enormous issues that fricked WoD's development and they had to put all hands on deck to solve it, which meant that WoD had an enormous amount of art and model assets, but no content with which to use them for. It's why HFC had some of the most new models of any raid, and why HFC was so large. It's also why we went into Legion with so many unique art assets, because artists were so far ahead of the curve.
blizz had been working on project titan since 2007 and canceled it in 2013. they were absolutely being developed at the same time
Legion was the end, that's it, honestly they tied up most of the shit left by wc3.

WoW's story has been cringeworthy, nonsensical garbage since, being charitable, the end of Cataclysm. Even the single good expansion since then (which is Legion, contrarian frickwits) had a moronic, fanfiction-tier plot. It's just the rest was good enough to prop it up. That wasn't the case for failed, garbage expansions like WoD, BfA and Sneedolands. It's no surprise that people stopped giving a shit.
Sneedolands irrecovably ruined the story and the setting thought the writing has been steadily declining since BC

All old hate has been forgotten and forgiven. No one wants to bash the others head in. Its now the Avengers vs generic evil green/ purple/ black cosmic foe of the week

I remember Archimonde getting rekt and then Arthus putting on some crown and that was it. No new warcraft story in 20 years.
I was kind of still interested in it, even though I don't play the game anymore, until they randomly had Sylvanas show up and break Arthas' helm and then kill a bunch of beloved Warcraft heroes like Saurfang and then burn the world tree.
It was at that point that I asked, "Who is this game even for anymore?" Because it was clearly not for those who enjoyed Warcraft and its stories up until that point.
They really can't withstand Chaos, can they? The little ones.

Warcraft 3 was the last time Warcraft's story was legitimately well written. It took some time to realize that WoW's storytelling sucked and was just going to ruin what Warcraft 3 had established, but I think it's finally sunk in.
What's more, there's zero chance of the story ever being good again unless they do a reset on the whole setting. Here's an example of just how badly World of Warcraft has allowed its scope and shonen power escalation to get out of hand

WoW story just needs to have epic beasts, knights, automatons, etc. to fell with some buddies and a cool world to explore. Environmental stuff is cool I guess but if we’re being honest, WoW was always pushing stories between players over the actual narrative even when said narrative changed the map for good like with Cataclysm.
