It was simply not a very good game. It was padded to hell and back.

Honestly once Noah and Mio reunited the game had emotionally and narratively peaked. The twist was fantastic and the game chose to limp on for a further 15-20 hours. The pacing is all over the place before and after this but honestly that 2 hour long stint from the prison segment to the reunion was 100% kino and made everything else worth it.

And then the game just kind of continues.

because it was a single player game with conclusion, people moved on

Not to mention that only single-player games that get discussed many years later are either defining in gameplay or story conclusion is based on conflict that have clashing of values or moral dilemma than story itself hence people still discuss if arthas was right to purge the city or if what edeltard done was justified but no one discuss elysium twist in xb 2 because it is just closed event you experienced and there is nothing to add

I think that the biggest mistake was that origin was full of empty hallways of trash fights, it was too long for it's own good and fights with x and y had so lackluster dialogues it was sad

I was speaking mechanically, he's the best designed boss fight. But actually, now that I think about it, he's really only behind Malos and Siren design wise, he's got a clean design as the giant head, meanwhile Zanza, and Aion, and Alpha all look like visual diarrhea. And then Fog King is just a big black blob.

The final boss is objectively the best in the series on a pure spectacle level, Malos is a better character but Z is still better than Zanza, who needed an entire extra game to make him not a shit villain. Z is an embodiment of an idea, him being one dimensional made sense

Zanza has just an empty hallway with old bosses and two phases, Z has his initial phase in the theater, all the heroes showing up including Melia and Nia who werent heroes prior, then final phase all with a grandscale war going on in the background. I like 1's final Zanza fight but 3 pulled out all the stops for its finale

3's last chapter and a half were a wet fart in a series that escalates immensely at that point in the stories. It was said in the base game: after Noah and co broke the endless now both world successfully merged. That was shown by Noah hearing Mio's flute at the end.
In the DLC Takahashi went out of his way beat you over the head with it: 2 planets passed each other, then merged.

If they could merge, why didnt they from the start? What does merging even entrails, did the whole 2 universe merge or just 2 planets. Xenoblade 1 and 2 are about beating the god and humanity forging their own path.
Xenoblade 3 is about the aftermath: humans are left to fend for themselves. When an event occurs that might result in total annihilation, they freeze in fear resulting in creation of Mobius. The moral of XB3 is to forge ahead even if the future is uncertain and that results in the happy end where both planets merge.
            >did the whole 2 universe merge or just 2 planets
            Does that matter?
The split Kalus caused with his experiment got mended.
            >What happened to people living on those planets when they merged.
They're all thogether now. And people from the City are reborn there, as was spelled out at the end of XB3.

            Anonymous

Have you even played the DLC (or finished it?). It litteraly explained almost everything not clear from the base game, even if you are a 15 years old moron. Like what truly happens to the people from the City after death (and why they evaporate) and it even clearly expands the end of X3 by litteraly showing the planets merging after 2 flashes of color (which were from Mio and Noah) litteraly seconds after Noah teleported (which was also clearly shown).

Man I don't know how you play games, but you will need to focus a bit more if you're playing story driven games. But since you seems to hate it, I guess that's why.

                Anonymous

                So you are a moron.
                >why didnt they from the start
The original goal of Origin is to be a backup when the worlds collide. The backup contains souls and memories of people using several technologies from both world (i.e: core crystal). They were never supposed to stay on the same world originally, just to drift appart.

IIRC this was explained in the base game by the way.
The question fans asked themselves at the end of X3 was: what the frick happened? Even if base game did show a bit of world merging, it was not sure.

So that's where the DLC is. You asked: why did they not merge since the beginning? It's almost the same question as: Why is Matthew not destroying Moebius after the DLC?

Because this is a game motivation by wills, and they are inside ORIGIN, stored as MEMORIES and WILLS.

If you are meeting strangers, do you want to stay with them forever? No. But Noah and Mio longed for eachother across a thousand lives (my number here is bullshit before you call it like a moron).

THIS IS what you see at the end of the DLC, something that was not in the base game. Well I don't remember exactly the order but it was like that :
                - Noah hears Mio's tune and he disappears: except in the DLC, it is much more clear as you can directly see it
                - You see our solar system, 2 planets (blurry/invisible) separating
                - (Meanwhile, you have the song from the same singer as the older xeno games)
                - each planets resonate in blue and green: wow what if they were related to Ouroboros??? And maybe specific characters???
                - Merge

So here in this case, you are in a game of WILLS (and even more, since it seems tied to Xenosaga which is basically WILLS: the universe), 2 peoples who had access to multiple shenanigan (pneuma's gauntlet, malot shit, Alvis stuff, descendant of ...) LONGED for each other, even after having their memories (?) reset since the loops ended.

So, here we are, congrats! You played 150h for nothing as you understood nothing.

                Anonymous

Also, to double down: You literaly understood nothing of the main plot if your question was "Why didn't they do it from the start".

            >If they could merge, why didnt they from the start?
the energy generated from the planets colliding was supposed to power origin, but the collision was stopped by mobeus/origin itself. It's only after beating Z that the process resumes

            Anonymous

The experience of being on Aionios taught the people of the worlds to interlink
That's why they shine blue and yellow before merging after Future Redeemed: the worlds are actually interlinking into something that won't explode
But interlinking can only be done when your emotions are at a peak, whereas Aionios was created from the fear of the future that defined Moebius keeping Origin from doing anything

          >both world successfully merged. That was shown by Noah hearing Mio's flute at the end.
You don't see Noah's world change. You just hear the flute and he disappears.
Of course if you're tuned in to Takahashi's sense of storytelling, you'll understand he's pulling some bullshit that rows back on an earlier emotional scene.

          >"One day, I'll come and see you!"

that's not the point of the game... they beat you on you head countless times about the fact that conflicts will always happen regardless of what time period you are in, what kind of world you're living in, what you're fighting, it doesn't matter. at the end of the day people will fight each other, and that's okay, just make the most out of it. the new merged world will eventually give way to more petty squabbles, that's just how it is.

the complaints about the game is that it's uncharacteristically vague given all their other games, with a penchant for overexplaining stuff. naturally people came to expect the same level of detail in this, but they didn't.

Both previous Xeno games ended 'poorly', with elements that were not fully resolved, and people went to the internet to argue about shit like melia's relationship with shulk or how the frick pyra and mythra are supposed to work in the ending. XC3 ties everything up too tightly, and there's not really any loose ends to argue about.

It was mediocre no matter what the shills tell you.
All titles before it were talked about for years after.
Its pretty obvious, happens with alot of games now.

Games being hyped up before and a few weeks after release. Anybody who points bad stuff out is being ridiculed and pushed out the thread.

The best part of XB3 was the music for me but even that was a bit less memorable than the previous titles.

I didn't mind any of the endings besides 3 cause too much shit was left unexplained and uncertain. All the other endings just told the players that a new future was waiting in the new world. They left it up to your imagination until 3 came out and future redeemed just left it vague enough again for you to imagine what happened to the merged world.

that's the thing. it wasn't needed since the game was conclusive enough. XenoX was the better approach in that regard.

Compared to 1 and 2 the character designs got way worse, the gameplay got worse, the music got worse, the art style got worse, the environment got a lot worse and less interesting to explore, and the music isn't nearly as good.

      >character designs got way worse
really? I think the guy improved a ton in terms proportions and color choices, nothing really comically stand out now in relation to the world like Rex's blue and Nia's yellow from before. he also seemed to have figured out a nice balance for a unifying style to apply for all three games, all the returning characters look great and there's no Nomura (and other guest artists) this time to make characters look like they're Kingdom Hearts rejects so it's more consistent.

        Anonymous

The characters all have darker lower bodies. This is so that they would be able to exchange their upper halves with each other without it looking absolutely ridiculous.

The downside to this is that all the characters have very bland, forgettable designs.

          Anonymous

you mean for when they change jobs? I was mostly referring to their overall appearance rather than just their outfits, and I wouldn't really go as far as to say they're forgettable but they are a bit more down to earth. but a more reserved designed is preferable than an offensive one in my opinion.

again, the easiest way to judge this aspect is to take a look at the returning characters. it doesn't necessarily have to be just their clothes since it's obviously different, but their anatomy, facial structure and expressions, how they look in the context of the world and other characters, etc.. Melia, Nia, Rex and Shulk (and Glimmer) are all upgrades from where they came from imo. I can appreciate Xenoblade 2 being more vibrant and fantastical with the designs but I much prefer the more uniform aesthetics in 3.

Old man Shulk and Roid-Rex were literally peak jrpg party members ever. Matthew also had more personality than any other main character in the series, including Shulk and Rex in their own games.

Because it was a fantastic game up to Swordmarch, then the story lost steam, combat had no new mechanics and very few of the sidequests had anything interesting to them. In Xeno 2 I did every superboss because I wanted to challenge myself, in 3 the combat felt less engaging since I could take all the time in the world to kill the mob.

Is 3 worth playing? I tried to play 2 but I really can't get into it. The combat seems interesting but also incredibly slow to start and get into. The story also seems interesting but isn't really going anywhere at the moment.

If you didnt like 2s gameplay no, its similar and personally i think inferior to 2s. As for the story, you can enjoy 3s base game without any knowledge of the series, even though i dont think its worth playing for the story alone if you never played any of the previous titles

3 is my favorite in the series and i had the least complaints on it compared to 1, 2, and X. I say if you finished 1 or X, it will be similar in that field.

      Anonymous

3 has worse story and combat, the only thing it does better is the QoL improvements and much better side quests(that end up being better than majority of the main story), but 2 is better otherwise. 3 also has even worse and slower start, its not until late chapter 3 when the game opens up, and chapter 4-5 is when it gets good but only briefly, most of it is not good. But if you are asking if you should skip to 3, then the answer is no

Also who the frick thought that inability to remove party members is a good thing?

This also completely destroys all drama and e.t.c because they're all have lines in sidequests, unlike prevoius games where it was random. In 3 you always know that all 6 characters always will be in a party, because game designers are idiots

Even Xenoblade 2 had a moment, where Pyra was gone from the party although the game makes you think that she always be with you because you can't unequip her from blade slot in the original playthrough.

The same with fiora in 1.

This. Even the one that I "like" that being Xenoblade 2's combat is still not great.

Yeah, xb2's is the best, but still not great. The thing I like about it is that the real time combat actually matters. Having to setup and work towards a good chain attack whit the orbs is cool.

In xb1 and especially 3, anything other than chain attacks are a complete waste of time.

But the one thing that plagues all of them is the fact the nothing ever changes. It doesn't matter if you're level 8 fighting some rabbit or level 70 fighting a robot or max level fighting a superboss dragon, every battle playes out the exact same way and it's so mind numbing

I had this realisation in 3 when you are fighting with M and N. After that it started to feel soo boring, especially ouroboros combat, it's just an absolute shit.

      Anonymous

This also the point. Xenoblade 1 was not meant to be Xeno game, it was just a jrpg which original name was "Monado: Beginning of the World"

And in XC2 devs told that there is no connection to the first game, like it was with Final Fantasy games and when you played XC2 it really felt like it, it was a complete different game. And because of it the absolutely mad twists at the end felt even more insane. And especially with Zohar at the end which just said that this series is part of Xeno now.

And after XC2, when the mystery is gone, i expected for them to go all out in XC3. But it was just a XC1/XC2 ripoff without new interesting concepts and ideas and the story itself just sits in one place, without moving forward.

        Anonymous

They set the stage for a big new Rex adventure at the end of XC2 but just didn't want to commit apparently. At the same time they also didn't want to leave the XC1/2 baggage behind and even went ahead and made FR. It's a mess and I hope they do move far away from it all now and actually start with a clean slate.

I think that they should've just made XC3 a straight sequel with the actual Shulk and Rex kids as main protagonists or just part of the main party. Without all this simulaton bullshit which just seems like a copy of XC1

Which is literally what they did, make new shit up and tie it into the old stuff but not straight up make a whole game focusing on the by now heavily promoted, iconic XC charas. Rex + girls or their kids

I think that they should've just made XC3 a straight sequel with the actual Shulk and Rex kids as main protagonists or just part of the main party. Without all this simulaton bullshit which just seems like a copy of XC1

exploring a new world alone sells itself to the casual crowd where some literally started with XC2 because the switch barely had games, even if it probably doesn't satisfy what the average xeno gay wants from the series, but not every xeno game has to do that anyways and trying to please everyone will just please no one. In some ways this is gonna turn into the same problem the FF series had where they now finally pivoted and started working on shit like FF7R, people wanted for cloud for 20 years but it took SE almost collapsing under their own bullshit to capitalize on low hanging fruit kek

    >Origin is made out of Ontos/Alvis.
    >He still has godlike powers, even though it was clear at the end of XB2 that the processors should not have them anymore.
    >Let's throw Pneuma's core and Logos in the mix without any build-up in the last leg of the game.
    >Sacrifice old cast too.
    >Remerge happens and phase in somewhere.
    Frick this.

Somehow, I wish XB3 was just old cast and new cast trying to deal with the merge catastrophic consequences and triyng to convince everyone to board the ark.

I liked it, the “sacrifice” tells us why Shulk & Rex aren’t in base XC3 and I like that the base game doesn’t go overboard with the fanservice besides Melia & Nia.

I don’t know, maybe it could have been better but I’m pretty satisfied with how the trilogy ended. I still hope we get Xenoblade Warriors for one last big crossover before the trilogy characters are ditched in favor of a new one.

My opinion is that they shot their load too early. The M and N """""""twist"""""" should've been the climax, and that's how it was written, but they still had a bunch of random shit to do after before the ending. After 80 hours of playing, and that hour long cutscenes leading up to a bossfight, I was done. I loved it up until that point, but any emotional weight the story has was completely gone after that point. With the illusion of a good game fizzling away, there's no reason to play a auto battler with a shit ton of walking between fights.

X did it right. The story was paced perfectly, and I still talk about thay ending with friends. The mainline games are paced so poorly it's not even worth trying to talk about.

They should've made the game about a different cast or at least put coomer autist bait designs like ethel into the main party again. Instead they made a pozzed game no one really cares about. I've had multiple people that actually liked the game tell me they just stopped randomly because they got bored in the last stretch too, that doesn't happen if you're actually invested in the characters.

Because, the regular game had next to nothing to do with the other two despite being stated by the producer that it was the final chapter of that part of the saga and mostly rewrites itself out of existence by the end. Then, they released an expansion DLC that was closer to what you would expect from that statement, but, like Torna, it was a story you already knew the end of thanks to the regular game. Thus, no matter for which part you come for, you end up being disappointed story-wise.
You can sum up the important things that happened an will be relevant later in that episode with a mere "The two earths get rejoined", pretty much everything else is irrelevant.

Noah is very boring he makes me feel nothing like shulk and rex arent exactly super unique or anything but they are at least more interesting. the setting feels pointless like it does nothing with the fact the worlds are merged, the main menu music is shit, and the overworld music is pretty much worse than 1 and 2 across the board. the character designs are boring compared to 1 and 2. the gameplay is worse than 2. Z and N are lame villains

Noah is a great character in the setting of 3, a world where everyone is raised to be killers and he takes a more introspective look at things, plus when viewing Noah's character you have to take into account N, theyre literally the same person and our Noah would have done exactly the same if he was in N's shoes. Hoenstly he's my favorite Xeno protag right by Fei

Was very dissapointed by main menu music. Was expecting something very different (all previous xenoblade games had really different main menu themes), but they simple made it like XC2...but unlike xc2, xc3 theme is boring.

Also did you know that XC3 main menu theme is final boss theme?

i honestly cant even remeber the final boss theme

Zanza has just an empty hallway with old bosses and two phases, Z has his initial phase in the theater, all the heroes showing up including Melia and Nia who werent heroes prior, then final phase all with a grandscale war going on in the background. I like 1's final Zanza fight but 3 pulled out all the stops for its finale

Z whole fight is slow and boring littered with cutscenes I dont care about, 1 actually felt epic https://youtu.be/TUQXGvG5DT0?t=39

                Anonymous

Actually the final boss theme is one of little things that i really like (although i could barely hear it during the fight). Imo it's amazing. Also it's the first time since Xenosaga 1 (2002), when Mitsuda composed a final boss theme for Xeno game.

XC2 final boss theme was good too, but it was too short and also on two phases it was the same music. XC3 at least fixed that a little.

XC1 of course the best with two completely different themes.

He's very introspective and reserved compared to Shulk and Rex, I can understand why a lot of people think he's boring. But in my opinion, a major part of the game serves as a character study for Noah (and N). He's played as a straight-laced, no-nonsense hero type who's fighting for the good of the world, but in reality it's really just him forcing his world view on everyone who comes across his path to the point where it's almost selfish. This comes to a head with N where he succumbs to that desire, and again, force it on anyone who opposes him.

Noah might come off as a gary stu, partly because N is already a neatly wrapped package of his whole character flaw. He learns from his mistake of past lives and uses it as a stepping stone to affirm his conviction of setting the world free, even at the cost of people getting hurt and killed.

                >He's very introspective and reserved compared
sure but we dont really get to hear a lot of his thoughts so we are just left with a boring character

                Anonymous

Which of his thoughts would you like to hear more about? Everything that was shown in game are the only ones that need known for the player. He thinks the world as a cruel and unjust place, and yet it's their world all the same. When given the power to do something about it, he does.

Matthew's very similar in philosophy, except more outspoken and brash. I can understand why he's much more well-received than Noah reading through the posts in XC3 threads.

Continuing on the Noah's ark reference, we could have had a "storm" of apocalyptic proportions, with both XB1 and XB2 world's landmarks or characters phasing in an out of existence, time and space paradoxes (I'm thinking of chrono cross' dead sea as an example) and a lot of pretty cool environment designs, and old and new cast trying to make everyone board the ark. Instead, the merge already happened, the story is mostly about who control the boat, and environments amount to big holes in land. I'm furious about this waste of potential.

Illustrating how stagnation corrupts the progression of life itself by pulling elements from the previous games and turning them on their head, morphing them into something lifeless and sterile in comparison to the beauty they held before.

It’s a narrative choice that provided a unique method of wordlessly showing the themes to the player. It’s fantastic

Every Xenoblade game’s world is a direct reflection of its themes. I’m not sure why it’s “shit” now when this principle of environmental design has existed since the first game.

I think it would've been cooler if they actually stuck to their guns and had Mio die for real at the end of chapter 5, and her spot in the party gets permanently replaced by a reformed M instead. This way, the emotional highs from her death would linger on and the stakes would become very personal all the way into the finale, as you no longer just fight to save the world from Moebius, but to take revenge on N, and maybe find a way to bring Mio back by wresting Origin from Z's control.

      >replaced by a reformed M

This is impossible because of the thing i wrote earlier

Also who the frick thought that inability to remove party members is a good thing?

This also completely destroys all drama and e.t.c because they're all have lines in sidequests, unlike prevoius games where it was random. In 3 you always know that all 6 characters always will be in a party, because game designers are idiots

This game absolutely fails to tie story and gameplay

        Anonymous

They could simply make it so that you had to do all side content before infiltrating the prison. It's not like there's much story going on in chapter 6 anyway, you just find Origin parts for the boat.

          Anonymous

          >put a community lock in your main story
No thank you. While I agree that the story could have improved by integrating the other party member's side stories into the main story, being told you have to complete side content to progress would suck. It worked in X because the whole point of the side content was to chart Mira and expand your knowledge of the planet to find the Lifehold, but in this game it would go against the main story because by the time you reach the City Mio only has a few months left and she already b***hed out about Noah wasting everyone's time. They don't have much time to head back to Gamma to go walk around with Teach. Even worse is that it would all have to be before the prison section, so chapter 6 would still be a boring drag as well.

FRICK THIS GAY EARTH, FRICK TAKAHASHI FOR RUINING THIS GAME GOD FRICK SHIT

Honestly wouldn’t utilize M’s role in the story, she’s there as a victim of N’s sick love and just wants to die, so her using her pre established power from the boss fight to swap was the better choice than this theoretical story. M giving her life to Mio is the biggest frick you to N than any revenge story like that could possibly have, everything he worked for was instantly lost, his only reason for even being in Moebius gone by her own choice while he unknowingly tortured the love of his life, not to mention such a story would just make Noah Shulk 2.0 with the revenge boner

        Anonymous

I think it could work, because it would also make Noah a better protagonist. He's not with his Mio anymore, he has to deal with it. It would actively show him as being a better driving force than N, to show him that it IS possible to cope and live without your loved one. And then you tie it all together with either M sacrificing herself, and you get some spiel about how "we'll meet again some day, I know it" and whatever. Then cue the stinger shot of Noah and Mio and whoever finally being reunited in a merged world, different timeline, whatever.

          Anonymous

Noah displays that he is entirely capable of living without his Mio in the ending where he and the rest of the party allows for the worlds to split once more. He has no idea if he’ll ever see her again, much less even remember her.

Having a stinger of Noah and Mio reuniting in the merged world would kill the message of the game. It’s pure wish fulfillment.

        >make Noah Shulk 2.0

Well, devs haven't been too shy on copypasting in XC3 anyway.

        N - Jin 2.0 (who was already being copied from Grahf);
        Z and his pocket world with nothing beyond it - Zanza 2.0;
        Consuls - Face mechons 2.0 (Whom were already being copied from Testaments);
D - Mumkhar 2.0 (but without any motivation whatsoever)

        and etc

          Anonymous

I wouldn't call it copypasting because their journey(Jin/N) or motivations(Z/Zanza) are entirely different but it is really close to retelling.
Jin entire motivation is vengeance for loss of loved one while N did what he did so he could be with one he love for whole eternity and after failing at that he have one great guilt trip filled with sorrow. While their character function in the story is similar their characters are completely different. Same with Zanza and Z, Z was people feelings given form and subconsciously abiding to people hidden desire for being able to stand in one moment for eternity while Zanza made ecosystem to be a god for whole eternity, same case with JIn and N, their character have same function but have entirely different motivation and source.
Every villain character with redemption arc or "big bad godlike existence" will be similar to some extent

Mumkhar motivation is complete garbage and hardly can be called that

    >Sword of the Origin (Noah). The sword which Noah pulls out from chest of his ouroboros.

Cope. XC3 couldn't even overtake XC2 and thats with something like over 10 times the switch consoles in the wild compared to when XC2 released. TOTK leaked like almost 2 weeks before release and became the fastest selling Nintendo game ever.

          Anonymous

I think that's the big thing. That there were WAY more Switches in the wild so it would make sense that 3 would outsell 2 easily enough, but so far as I know, it hasn't.

I really think that last chapter and ending, even if people didn't dislike it, kinda lost people's interest, so word of mouth didn't move the game as much.

XC3 has too much of a vague send-off to characters that we may never see again. If we're not going to see XC1 or XC2 characters again at least give us some glimpses of their lives before you move to whatever next chapter you're doing.

Takahashi leaned too much on being vague about a lot of things that a lot of players want to see even in regards to XC3 main cast fates. Which we only really know about is Noah childhood friends since Agnus XC3 cast didn't get anything on how their lives were before or after Aionios.

What are Blades in 3? Are they just feelings too? At first I thought they were fancy Iris technology that had come about over time, but then it becomes a will-based thing with characters like Nikol. The whole "Only killing with a Blade extracts life for the Flame Clock" is also weird, along with the fact that these aren't all just pre-made weapons. Rex can manifest Blades that resemble the Aegis Swords, but are clearly not. They lack the Zohar and have more design differences. So it's not really their swords, it's the manifestation of Rex's feelings for them that resembles their original swords. And if they're manifested feelings, it's Origin that makes them possible.

Monolith has enough distinct characters to just do some all stars game with half of them at this point. Throw in kos-mos and there you go. If it sells well, then on the second round you try and do some game that ties into a past title main setting more. It's literally what they did with both the Zelda and FE musou games.

                Anonymous

I don't think these random spin-offs are considered canon anywhere really. Which is mostly my point, keep the past game fanservice away from mainline. Less confusing and allows for a better plot without moronic ret-con shit "oh guys yeah uh we actually always uh planned this plot twist right from the uh first game pls believe teehee".

none of the Zelda or Fire Emblem games are canon to each other except the ones that are direct sequels like OOT/MM, BOTW/TOTK, and the Tellius games. Xenoblade 1-3 is a continuous story. That's why I don't think a non-canon spin off would work

Honestly, should have reversed 'em. Have the base game be the fanservice, and the DLC be the new characters.

speak for yourself. XB2 was shit and left a bad taste for the franchise for me since then. 3 fixed most of the issues I had with 1 and 2. Also, engage is a step in the right direction.

X3 was boring as hell Narrative wise and tedious gameplay wise, absolutely hated having to switch classes every two seconds between every single party member. There should've been a randomizer to just auto do that for you. I played for like 10-15 hours before just dropping it.

          Anonymous

Engage is the step in right direction only in reducing bussy work(somniel vs academy) and gameplay department. Story is bland as frick and I find most of character designs either forgettable or pants on head moronic. Overall it is better game than 3trannies but it is not very high bar when you recall that gameplay in 3h was so shit it can be hardly called a TRPG/strategy game, it is more of a visual novel with those games elements

                Anonymous

You have to understand that for a lot of "people", "anime" begins and ends with something's artstyle, regardless of story structure, themes and tone.

                Anonymous

Xenoblade 1 had a "realistic" artstyle. I would blame the dub as well but even English Shulk is pretty much a shounen protag, though Dunban did get changed from a chuuni to more of a mentor type.

                Anonymous

I feel the presentation on how Shulk is voiced in Japanese compared to how he is voiced in English makes them two different characters. Shulk in Japanese sounds much more wimpy ,hesitant, and overly polite compared to how more confident sounding Adam Howden makes him be. Even at Shulk lowest moments when he is breaking down Adam Howden never makes Shulk sounds pathetic as he does in those moments like his Japanese VA does .

If Shulk was more voiced to be more close to his Japanese VA performance of the character I doubt he would've been liked by a western audience. He would be seen too much as a wimpy boy that isn't good for self-inserting into.

Engage is great from a purely gameplay perspective, easily the 3rd or 4th best game in series. Its just the writing and character designs are shit. Plus 3H attracted a ton of persona gays who only wanted another highschool dating sim with a bit of strategy game that they could just grind and auto battle through tacked on. Engage is literally the exact opposite of what those people wanted. Unfortunately I think they'll learn the wrong lessons from Engage's failure and we'll never get another FE with good gameplay again.

I don't like the gameplay as much as XC2 because swapping classes around the whole party makes every character feel even more generic and less distinct than they did in XC2 where you could already swap Blades with a great degree of freedom. The Chain Attack system in 3 also feels much more shallow since you no longer need to build up shit on the target like you did in 2, which made you consider party composition more in order to get a strong Chain Attack.

What's the worst thing however is how the game doesn't allow you to unlock classes if you end up overleveled. I started playing it on release, did a bunch of side quests which got me to like double the level I "should" have been. When I went to resume the main story, I quickly found out that it was impossible to unlock classes from new heroes I met and basically all my party progression was frozen. I got bored of this crap and stopped playing like halfway through the game.

Granted, if the world or the characters or the story were super interesting, maybe I would have pushed through anyway - but it was definitely the gameplay which got me bored out of my mind. Never happened in XC1 or XC2, but neither of those game were so poorly thought out as this one.

Honestly my personal hang up with 3 the more I think about it is I just plain don't like the core story, themes, and world.

The whole Eternal Now, two armies unwittingly pit against each other for years by a shadow government, child soldiers who know not of life's pleasures, a world that can't grow beyond it's means and is slowly dying...

All things that sound interesting, and the previous games even did as well, yet for 3 it all felt like the worst version of these concepts. It's biggest crime was it was boring. I had to force myself to finish it. And while I might have enjoyed the DLC while I played it, I still don't really care about the Founders' plight. We learned all we really needed to know from the base game.

      Anonymous

Also, it wasn't the endless now though? The world slowly, but dissapearing, so what's the whole point? Did Z stupid or what?

When i only start XC3 i thought that they're using this eternal war to somehow keep the world alive, but no, it's irrelevant.

btw, the world should be frozen (floating rocks and etc) but why the grass moving then? I'm not even talking about time of day and weather

        Anonymous

yeah what was the point of the war? if you wanted to keep people here forever with out them rebelling why not give peaceful lives or keep them on drugs or someshit

well that was an entirely different reason in 1

            Anonymous

The only reason things went south in Xenoblade 1 is because Zanza couldn't cope with death. He got to be God of a world for hundreds, maybe even thousands of years, but once people got wanderlust and thus he wouldn't be able to reincorperate their life essence into himself and the Bionis, he decided to start pre-culling them.

Xenoblade X is the peak of the series. You can tell with how much effort went into it it is what takahashi wants to make. An MMOlite like Destiny 2 in Xenoblade X's world with the music of the most expensive japanese composer in all of gaming, Hiroyuki Sawano. Unironically this.

Nah, 3's party is great and the best in the series, and only gets mogged by the DLC party.

I'd personally say they're my least favorite party out of the numbered series.

Even in 1, I loved Shulk, Reyn, Melia, Dunban, and Riki. Fiora and Sharla bounce well off the other members.

Meanwhile, in 3 I like Eunie, Taion, Riku and Manana. Lanz has his moments, But Mio, Noah, and Sena all put me to sleep. Despite trying so hard to be quirky and energetic, Sena is super forgettable.

Sharla was decent when bouncing off Reyn. And I liked the 3 man group interactions they had at the start of the game.

I also find it funny how she said she was on Team Melia and didn't do shit to help her cause.

            Anonymous

Yeah, and that's pretty much all interactions she gets outside of a few heart to hearts. 3's party has much more active banter throughout the entire game, and throughout sidequests where they get to banter off the other heroes as well. I genuinely do not get how anyone could say 3's party isn't the best in terms of banter and party interactions.
