Why does the worst 5th gen console have the most nostalgia?

The Nintendo 64 is arguably the worst 5th gen console. It's way worse than Playstation and also worse than Saturn. Yet for some reason it has the most nostalgia out of all the 5th gen consoles. Despite it being a commercial flop for Nintendo and it's library of games having not aged well.

So why especially millenials are so nostalgic for this overrated console that was the worst of it's generation?

anon, nobody would have known that the N64 would be nintendo's first failure. they would have purchased it blind, believing it to be the next SNES. to understand how badly the N64 fricked up, you have to look at the Gamecube, which sold less than the Xbox and was nintendo's second worst mainline console, only outperforming the Wii U that killed nintendo's console line. the gamecube itself was not a bad console, but nobody had faith in it because they got burned buying an N64. which, incidentally, is precisely how sega killed the Dreamcast long before it was released.

Yeah 5th gen is really about how the two big console makers fricked up really really badly during that gen. Only Nintendo didn't frick up as badly as Sega which is why they still make hardware.

Nintendo had other successes concurrently (Game Boy) and in the past (NES) so they could take a few failures in stride. Sega couldn't afford to run a failing business for as long.

4 player localized multiplayer means you spent a lot of time playing games with your bros, and even shitty games with your bros is a lot of fun and gives you fond memories. meanwhile ps1 gays were playing 80 hour jrpgs by themselves. which, i guess is fun. but really, you gonna remember every dumb book you read as a child? because thats what jrpgs basically are, long ass books with moving pictures.

there were some cool games on the playstation, and it did have some multiplayer games but most of them were 2 players max. So maybe you played multiplayer with a family member, or maybe you only had a few friends so 1 kid would come over and play with you. But nintendo supported 4 person multiplayer out of the box. the whole family/gang could play and have tons of fun together.

its games are more unique. playstation became the direction videogames headed toward so today we have much better versions of playstation games. n64 became a dead branch and games have a lot more individuality to them because they didn't all get 1,000 clones with improved hardware

Because all the most refined games and groundbreaking content was almost all on n64.
The ps1 had lots of good games but almost all of them were just transitions from snes games with very similar mechanics but with higher production values, and the games that were fully 3d were clunky as hell.

Because even if you didn't own one, you probably knew someone who did and you'd play some multiplayer games at their house and it was a good time.

That's where the nostalgia comes from, it sold like shit and had barely any singleplayer games worth playing, which is why speedrunning became popular because people kept playing OoT and Mario 64 over and over again. But it had very good multiplayer titles and it reminds people of better times when they had fun with all their friends as a kid.

With the PlayStation everyone played different games. Spyro, Syphon Filter, Metal Gear Solid, G-Police, Kurushi, Pandemonium, Pac-Man World.... even fricking Gex sold millions of copies on the PlayStation and when the hell do you ever hear about Gex?
Meanwhile on the N64 everyone played the same dozen games. Mario, Banjo, Goldeneye... N64 only had less than 300 games released in US of which a third are sports games and another third are the worst versions of multiplatform titles. Of the remaining 100 very few are good, worth talking about or sold well.
So of course the N64 has different nostalgia. N64 symbolises the few games worth talking about that it has whereas the PlayStation was merely a tool used to play its titles.

64 kids were a special breed. They could have 4 games an entire generation and not get bored with them. They could unironically sit and play Goldeneye 4 player splitscreen on a tiny ass tv with blurry graphics and 10 fps for years without getting bored. Whenever I came home to a 64 kid I always knew what 3-5 games they would have. And the second controller you got to use would always have that half broken half flaccid wiggling middle joystick. Meanwhile we PSX and PC gamers got new amazing games every month or every other month. Go home to a PSX kid and he'd have over 10+ games and he almost always had some hidden gem you'd never heard of before that was fun as hell. Then you went over to the 64 kid again and you went "Yaay... Golden eye, again...", "oh sweet... Smash for the millionth time..."
64 babbies all have the exact same memories because they played the exact same game. If a 64 kid was REALLY radical he had Quest 64 or Shadowman or some shit. Otherwise 99% had the exact same games they played over and over and over again for an entire generation.

Coming over to someone and play new and fresh PSX "shovelware" instead of playing Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Smash, Goldeneye or Perfect Dark for the millionth time with flaccid joysticks was a god damn blessing. Whenever I went to their tv and saw that N64 console with those 4 grey cartridges plus that golden one I always let out a sigh and dreamed of checking out a bundle of PSX games instead. It's like trying to explain this to a up-his-own-ass movie fan that only wants to watch Citizen Kane and 3-4 other classic movies over and over and over again. I mean Citizen Kane is a classic but come the frick on. Sometimes you just want a sloppy horror flick or a dumb comedy. But N64 fans can't understand this concept. They'll keep mumbling b-but ocarina of time... b-but shovelware...

I agree though, the n64's analog stick was a piece of shit and even more of a ripoff then they switch joycons. Those analogs would become so loose and floppy from games like mario party, was fricking awful.

Other way around. N64 preceded the Saturn 3D pad and Sega themselves acknowledged that it's concept was based on the N64 controller. N64's controller is why every console manufacturer dropped their main controller mid generation for analog stick variations

Yeah looked it up. Saturn 3d pad beat N64 to Europe and USA. But was released 1 month after N64 in Japan. theyre only called that by people who first started playing the series on the n64 due to brand recognition. whoa dude, its like, zelda! its gotta be awesome! meanwhile, real zelda fans hated the games and left which is why it is now the de facto series for women.

Ask 100 people to name their top 5 PS1 games. You won't hear anyone name the same 5 games.
Ask 100 people to name their top 5 N64 games. You will hear "mario, zelda and uuuuhhhhh. .." 100 times. You now realize that this has been the case with Nintendo for 25 fricking years now.

moron. there were more good jrpgs and fighting games alone on the ps1 than the entire n64 library. the n64 didnt even have games from those genres besides Quest 64 (you can tell how bad that game was just from the name) and shit tier mortal kombat ports

I learned from this board that N64 had like 2 decent 3d fighters. Fighter's Destiny and Fighter's Destiny 2. Both games sold like shit though.

Normal people don’t like japashit or grainy shovelware. N64s more cartoon like graphics were better than “realism” and anime weirdo shit that looked horrible in polygons. Fact is normal people with friends played n64 and laughed when the weirdos who smelled like Mountain Dew and cat piss insisted that some japshit and 4 minute loading screens for shovelware was better than fun Mario and goldeneye.

playstation was the normalgay console of choice for teens and adults and kids just came from watching the pokemon anime for a couple of years and dbz started airing when the n64 was in its prime. anime was big with kids and was airing on like every saturday morning cartoon channel. thinking they hated "japshit" is hilariously wrong.

When I grew up, the only japshit literary anyone touched was Pokemon for like a 6 month period when it came out. Only weirdos and spergs liked it or dbz beyond that. Anime was unheard of. Guessing you were just friends with weirdo spergs.

Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, etc. Japshit was literally trending mainstream when N64 was at its peak.

We played Pokémon for 6 months when it came out, afterward anyone who talked about it was gay. Only person I knew into Sailor Moon were these stick thin weird twin girls who smelled like cat piss. Only person I knew into DBZ was a complete homosexual with a blow dried mullet that I reckon he thought looked like anime hair, and one alright guy that started out as a dweeb and got jacked.

And with these three notables aside, literally no one watched anime or knew what a JRPG was (except probably the mullet kid, we were too busy bullying him to find out though).

I know those 3 things you listed did numbers, but the people who liked them were all weirdo sperg undesirables. And they were the exceptions. The only japshit around. Normal people played n64 with their friends.

i'm a bit younger but dbz was absolutely gigantic here. but we're talking middle school vs high school here, so in middle school dbz was cool and in high school it wasn't, which makes sense. basically dbz to me is what pokemon was to you, the last acceptable anime thing before it became uncool. but nintendo was equally as uncool here because it was "for kids".

You definitely never stepped into a video rental store in 1999. There was a whole room of PS1 games. There was 1 shelf of N64 games for Golden Eye, Mario and Zelda. That's all they bothered carrying for the whole fricking life of the system because its all anyone cared about regarding the N64. It literally existed for Golden Eye 4 player and that's it.

Sega Saturn failed even on Japan. If I recall it was a mix of marketing, and Sega Genesis also being that console you only knew one, maybe two, kids that actually had it. Also the handful of games that people are nostalgic over stood out that much compared to what was available

      Anonymous

Nope Saturn did not fail in Japan. Until early 1997 it actually led the Japanese market (then FF7 was released and it turned the tide). It outsold N64 in Japan. And I think it sold more consoles in Japan than all of other Sega's consoles sold in Japan combined.

So SOJ traded their worldwide success for Japan success and it didn't end well.

Classic Segatard insanity. N64 was a flop but the Saturn that sold 50k more units in Japan? The picture of success.

When you're a kid you don't want to admit your console is not the best one (although some adults also behave like this), so Nintendo fans had no other option but to pretend the few good games they had were the second coming of Christ and the games from other consoles were mediocre or crap.
Nintendo fans during the times of N64 and Gamecube were absolutely obnoxious, mostly due to jealousy. They always sounded sad, frustrated and angry. They forced themselves to reject lots of games and genres they had loved in the past, because they couldn't admit there were other good companies aside from Nintendo.
They calmed down during the Wii times, mostly because Nintendo's efforts to attract third parties and give its consoles more varied games have suceeded to a certain degree. And behaving like this for so long must be really exhausting. These days they aren't that different from sonyers. They keep giving special treatment to first party games, but sonyers also started doing the same after losing so many exclusivities during PS3 times.
But when you mention the N64, some Nintendo fans just start saying once again the same things they said when they were just jealous kids.

Saturngays make me laugh. They try so very hard just to even paint themselves as the silver medalist of the generation and fall hilariously short. Sony gave devs a new platform with unprecedented lenience leading to some of the most prized entries in veteran franchises and fostering new IPs, while Nintendo laid the groundwork for a shit ton of modern 3D game design. What the frick did the Saturn do? Eat Playstation and arcade table scraps? The Dreamcast was the far superior system and absolutely mogged the Saturn's legacy despite dying faster, selling less hardware, and having less buttons on its standard controller.

wave race and nba jam were n64 releases, they also had pretty fun multiplayer. dunno why some gay mentioned quest64, that game was weak shit even for being one of the rare rpgs on the n64. you could steam roll the entire game if you leveled the magic in a certain order, but if you went in blind and leveled the 'wrong' spell trees it was frustratingly hard.
there was also a lot of fun fighting games on the n64. the kids who only played smash were just poorgays that got in on the n64 towards the end of its life cycle.

N64 is known for 3d action/platforming games along with multiplayer/party games. Those genres were severely lacking on other consoles from the same generation.

Are you really trying to claim that PS1 wasn't full of action/platforming games? With the multiplayer I can somewhat agree due to PS1 being limited to 2 controllers. But PS1 was full of action/platforming games like: Tomb Raider series, Crash series, spyro games, Legacy of Kain, Megaman games, Megaman legends games and SOTN.

Full 3D games on PS1 looked, ran and played like shit. Inferior in almost every way. Most had no fricking clue what they were doing with 3D. Tank controls. Fixed camera angles, and bad design in general due to lack of any proper 3D rendering hardware. Most "3D" games on PS1 were really just fundamentally 2D games.

Almost all of this can be said of N64 which is why it hasn't aged well like PS1. The only difference is that N64 basically has zero 2d games while PS1 had them.

Now 6th gen onward 3d gaming fleshed out. But 5th gen was that clunky experimental phase.

Turok Rage Wars, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, F Zero, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Blast Corps, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64. I don't know what generations are supposed to be what ages anymore, but people my age remember having the N64 as a teenager and playing all these brilliant games with their friends. The other consoles had either tons of JRPGs or really niche but well received games that were hardly shipped outside of Japan. I don't even think about the Saturn as part of that generation. I would be surprised if more than 10 were sold in my entire country. Anyone who was old enough to appreciate games at that time, especially if they had friends, would disagree with you.

Playstation was actually a joint venture with Nintendo but Sony got dicked when Nintendo said they did not want a CD console anymore so Sony went at it on their own. PS1 is the true successor to the SNES which was the greatest of the prior gen.
