Why does this game have such a bad rep?

Why does this game have such a bad rep? I expected to play a dumpster fire but it's actually pretty good once you get a grasp on the combat. I'm surprised to see how many staples of the series originated here too, OoT feels genetically closer to AoL than LoZ.

They played it for five minutes on the zelda collector's edition disc for gamecube in-between ocarina of time and the wind waker demo and decided it was irredeemably shit before moving on

      >confusing progression due to bad translation
      >horrible difficulty scaling, one of the most moronic spikes of all time at stage 3 forcing people to grind.

Its not a bad game but its definitely not timeless, lots of its flaws were more common in the NES days.

Also this, i think most people who grew up with an NES liked Zelda 2 but definitely was a "not as good as the original" type of game. Its a lot easier to hate on when it has an entire legacy of games in front of it that are much different, rather than it being 1 out of 2 zelda games you can play.

I don't know either. I found it to be a lot of fun (except for trying to find the hidden village, my fault or not). Must be just that it's different than the other games.

Mostly because it's different. It's one of my favorite Zeldas.

        >Why doesn't Zelda fans like the game that isn't like Zelda?

Why is it not? You have a semi-open world gated by item/spell acquisition. Simple combat with a handful of enemies at most. Visit towns and talk to townspeople. You acquire heart containers. You protect the princess against Ganon(dorf). The main differences are the camera angle (the "real" Zelda games still use two different angles, and in fact Link's Awakening has sections with side camera) and the fact that Link can level up (a flavor difference).

It's among the top ten best selling games on the NES. It sold better than Punch-Out, Metroid, every Dragon Quest, every Castlevania, every Megaman, every other "great" game on the NES save the likes of Mario and Tetris. Your idiotic illusion that people "didn't like it" has no substance. It's bullshit dredged up after the fact by youtubers desperately trying to gain contrarian coolkid points to unsuspecting audiences who won't be assed to look it up.

      This.

The game is not bad at all, is just not a Zelda game.

      >i-it's not a zelda game
Your opinion is beyond moronic. It has Zelda in the title. You must be mentally ill to have missed that. Consider psychiatric help.

Ah yes, the sales number meme. I guess FF13 truly is one of the most popular games in that series.

I'm playing it now and it's great. I love everything from the exploration, the combat, the platforming, and the dungeons. I want to make a game like it with an emphasis on exploration.

    >OoT feels genetically closer to AoL than LoZ.
Funny you mention this because OoT was indeed born from a desire to refine sword-focused combat with spells from Zelda 2 in a 3D perspective hence the 1995 tech demo using AoL Link against an Iron Knuckle.
And now we know the Fairy spell was originally planned to return on OoT as well.

I couldn't beat the first or second as a kid, but it was fun and dopamine inducing non the less. Just looking at both games golden cartridges and title font side by side still feels me with joy.

Also, I think the game over screen of AoL was the first jump scare in gaming history. The memory of that morning is still seared in my mind

Because some dumbshit called the "angry video game homosexual" whatever inspired the entire trend of shrieking like a piss-diapered contrarian cuck about old games being "too hard". Once all the other nobodies without a personality saw it they all jumped on the bandwagon because it makes their infantile minds feel good to know a "secret" about how "uh AKSHUALLY that game u like isnt very good ;o)", and then other even lesser morons join in because they want to be part of the group saying the right mantras to fit in.

Zelda 2 is a top tier game, hate for it is just moronic juvenile homosexualry and peer pressure.

Most Zelda fans just like the 3d games, specially oot and botw, they just pretend to like the 2d and the original Zelda but with Zelda 2, since it doesn't have the core elements of the franchise, they can allow themselves to hate it, even if they haven't played it
