Played a bit of S3 SP two-three weeks ago. Very charming, but A.I. is severely lacking. Looked up multiplayer scene... and it both exists and is somewhat active based on how fast I was able to hop into the match.

The reason old RTS games fell off, and new ones consistently fail, is because most potential players are not into the competitive pvp.
That market is already more or less saturated by SC2 and AOE2 (maybe some supcom). New releases are trying to beat those giants at their own game, same mistake all the wow clones made.
They would likely find more success by focusing on both a strong custom game scene and singleplayer campaign.
And that's exactly what successful devs went with. All those town builders, map painters, defense games, deck-building autobattlers and whatever are thriving just fine.

Kinda worried about it too. Gameplaywise I've always hated how you could lose your entire army in 2 secs because you were not looking at it(even happens to pro often). But as a spectator, this is not really exciting to watch at the moment(at least compared to pro. sc2)

Very true, but you can always expand to your naturals while turtling. In most game it's enough to hit max army pop(and again I'm talking about your average game, not diamond and above).
Not sure about them taking over the RTS competitive scene, but, honestly, doesn't look too bad. Which was expected.
What I'm certain of is though, that the story and lore will be both woke (the special Cali flavor of it) and lame.
They aren't even ripping off the good one (RoC), their main level designer is from Frozen Throne, which is full of gimmick levels. At least we know there is a chance there won't be heroes since most of the team is from SC2.

Frozen Throne is a straight upgrade from RoC unless you really think item spam that the opponent cannot see and creeping to level 10 are good ideas.
