why dont party members in jrpgs interact at all ?
it makes no sense.

they should have more interesting stuff to say to each other than the melodramatic main plot ever could.

By JRPGs, do you mean Final Fantasy?

i cant name a jrpg that has a good focus on the whole party. maybe Grandia 1 but even there the characters that join in the 2nd half are just combat companions.

Not sure what the standard would be, but I guess Phantasy Star IV is good for that, you can even have the team talk to each other to get a hint at the current objective

my standard would be that the whole party should be related to the plot and engaged with each other.

outside of Tidus and Yunas melodrama everyone else is just an accessoire.
Auron just gets to tell him that he is a dipshit a few times.

It's both poignant and meaningless at times for each game in the series. You have random musings and discussing events together.

I agree with that. Since it's tradition, even now it's still text boxes, but at least there's voiceovers. A lot of previous Tales of games were localized without any voices at all during the skits.

I'm that anon - and I know. I loved Vesperia and they actually felt like a real Party and group of friends and allies. They argued, they debated, they bantered and all grew as characters and people.
Getting to glimpse into their conversations was a fun aspect of playing the game.

          >Meaningless chit-chat
They regularly discuss what's going on in the story, including events that just happen. The slice of life comedy bullshit happens in between but to call the function that gives majority of the party development "meaningless" just tells me you only watched a youtube review and didn't actually play the game. Frick off zoomer homosexual. additionally

Auron not interacting with the party that much saved FFX because if he had he would've impregnated every female party member.

There's a neat conversation with Lulu and Wakka that happens on the boat to Kilika I believe. In between Lulu's usual b***hing at Wakka, she brings up that Yuna had a private conversion with where she told her how Tidus hates his Dad. So Lulu wants Wakka to ask Tidus to be Yuna's Guardian since he'll be more likely to accept if Wakka brings it up since the invitation won't have the stink of his father on it. When I was younger I didn't like that scene. Lulu came off as a pushy b***h especially considering what she says the day prior. But in hindsight it kind of shows that despite her abrasive nature she does have honest talks with Wakka. And she has honest talks with Yuna. And even though she doesn't like Tidus at that point in the story, she's willing to tolerate him if he makes Yuna happy. Lulu's still not my favorite character but I did warm up to her.

what exactly DO you want? each character to be a main charactert least once? a fully fledged hero journey for each? characters interact all the fricking time in jrpgs, even ones you listed. do you just want them to not interact with the player? use ff10 as an example and explain what you wanted specifically

          Anonymous

i would make the parties smaller and construct plots that involve them all more

to take the FFX example, Aron and Lulu are the oldest characters. this should be a point of them relating to each other.
Tidus is the main guy but if you ambiguate who the main guy is you can have even some relationship tension, jealousy or even bold gestures by the male characters towards the females.
it feels weird that Tidus is the only one that has a dick while the others are props.

maybe im asking to much of the genre. but FFX is a standout precisely bcs it offers a little more than the average jrpg.

Eh kind of sort of. I'm not saying you're wrong but most of the problem has to do with setting, everyone has been indoctrinated by the same religion and thus everyone is on the same sheet of music with only the details changing. For example Lulu wants Wakka to stop imprinting his dead brother onto Tidus. Wakka is totally sold out on Yevon which brings conflict with Rikku. Tidus is totally ignorant so he bumps into everyone at least once. Rikku has a familial relationship with Yuna and is starkly against the pilgrimage. Kimarhi doesn't talk to anyone and is defensive around Yuna. Auron closely watches Tidus and Yuna because of his bonds with their fathers.

I get your point. Because Lulu and Kimarhi are both standoffish they never interact in spite of both being loyal to Yuna. Wakka doesn't talk to Auron enough despite his admiration of him and later his disappointment that Auron doesn't take Yevon seriously. Lulu is motherly towards Yuna but you figure she'd protest more given the guilt she feels towards Lady Ginnem. More could've been done. But I do feel the characters were clearly defined enough to serve that games purpose.

              Anonymous

this is exactly what i am talking against. characters are flanderized bcs they only have one strong defining feature and limited time and space to express anything else. Wakka sould have been an unironic anti al-bhed racist and Lulu should have had big conflicts with Yuna since she is like a protective sister to her.

                Anonymous

Well I think part of it had to do with story structure. One of the big twists is that Yuna is on a death march, she is voluntarily killing herself to stop Sin. But Tidus, nor the player, can know that until Rikku explains why the Al Bhed are doing what they're doing. Which by extension means the Al Bhed are supposed to be the bad guys up until that point. So Lulu can't protest too much because it could give the twist away too early. So by design, Lulu can only remain silent and drop small hints like telling Tidus not to fall in love with Yuna. Maybe there was a way around that like Lulu giving Yuna an out after Operation Mi'hen. Maybe she could tell Yuna she can turn back, which Tidus and the player could interpret that as her freaking out over all tragedy while Lulu knows this proves the Final Aeon is their only hope and thus Yuna's death is inevitable. But the carnage could make Yuna double down on the Pilgrimage to stop this madness. I don't know, I'm not a writer.

But this also applies to Wakka. Because we're supposed to like Wakka before he turns out to be a /misc/gay. So then the player reaction towards him would be to help him out of his racism instead of intentionally killing him every fight. Because outside of hating the Al Bhed, Wakka is a pretty chill guy. He was willing to help Tidus and he just wants to do his best for his loved ones. So if he goes full stormfront the moment you enter Luca, that's like 10 hours before the context gets fully explained and Yevon's hypocrisy is revealed.

Lulu isn't even a character, she is just wikipedia with honkers unless you go her attraction path but that isn't respected in cutscenes
When Tidus leaves, she just gives him a little handwave like his just off getting some groceries
