A guy asked Ohmori and Masuda just that in the SwSh media cycle. Ohmori said it's because it would be too hard to do quality control on the voice acting across all releases, along with production itself being harder if all dialogue needs to be voice acted.
Masuda then said that he personally doesn't like voice acting in games because it annoys him if a character's voice is different than how he imagines it.
You can check yourself if you want to, it was actualy a fairly wide "deep look into Gamefreak's brain" interview by... GameInformer I think was it? Something with Game in the name.
IMO they should just do what Nintendo does on most of their games and make characters do grunts/laughs/sounds and shit. It's charming and doesn't need to fit the written dialogue so it's also easy.
>doesn't like voice acting in games because it annoys him if a character's voice is different than how he imagines it
pretty keyed opinion
No financial or creative incentive. "You'll buy it anyways" is pretty much a company motto at this point, why splurge or put in the extra effort when the "core mainline pokemon game" tag is enough to sell 15+ million?
also this
and ALSO because the series was originally for low powered handhelds until recently >in before switch is a low powered handheld
These are literally the best responses. I hate hearing shitty English voice acting that sounds nothing like what I picture the characters having. Thank god for these two, I never want to hear VA work in Pokemon. Shitty fake job.
At the very least, they can just have the characters do soundbytes and use the same voices across all translations. Like in a lot of older Zelda games, when someone spoke and you would hear, "Hwooah?" or "Ha ha ha!" or "Hrrrmm...".
No voice acting but OBVIOUSLY HAVING LIP SYNCING is as fricking bad as the PS1 era of gaming where there was voice acting, but all the characters mouths were closed.
Then the MC in PLA has voice like Link for no reason. I hate these lying frickers. I hate Masuda the most because he always have some fricking moronic anwers
PLA doesn't have voice acting though. It's literally just very limited moments of the MC grunting for gameplay purposes. By that logic SwSh has voice acting because it has humans chanting during stadium battles.
One of the only times that I can say “Based Masuda”, pokémon never had voice acting other than some stafium announcers and it would just sound pretty weird if there was voice acting
>because it annoys him if a character's voice is different than how he imagines it.
Unironically based opinion. He knows he can't have full creative control over localization since that's TPC's job, so it's inevitable that out of the many languages Pokemon officially supports, one of them will have a voice that doesn't suit his personal beliefs.
No financial or creative incentive. "You'll buy it anyways" is pretty much a company motto at this point, why splurge or put in the extra effort when the "core mainline pokemon game" tag is enough to sell 15+ million?
It's pretty obvious it's just time concerns and rushed development. You can tell by the way the cutscenes are shot and directed that they were made with voice acting in mind. It's jarring as frick to see the characters emote and even move their mouths accurately and hear nothing .
Unless voice acting is extremely, extremely high quality I'd rather not have it at all.
I was playing Great Ace Attorney and the voice acting in the cutscenes actually made the game worse for me because of how fricking cringey some of the lines sounded. The only game I played in the past 5 years that had voice acting I liked was FE3H.
>The only game I played in the past 5 years that had voice acting I liked was FE3H.
They did nail a lot of the characters in that one, Hilda, Flayn, Seteth and Hubert in particular surprised me of how well they were done
I honestly don't mind it if jrpgs are voice acted, you are supposed to pay attention to the screen so reading isn't much of an issue
Voice acting in anything that isn't natively English is going to be shit 90% of the time because it's treated like how it is: a frivolous addition. It's not something anything needs to succeed and it's not taken seriously by anybody who actually makes things. The entry barrier is so low the people in the industry have to gatekeep the living shit out of the "profession" because for every voice actor demanding a better wage you have ten thousand blue haired nerdy fatasses who will do it for even cheaper just to be involved with their favorite series without having to do any actual work, and when studios only care about cutting costs that's who they're going to hire if they really feel pressured to add it since hiring real actors is too expensive.
Just have the devs voice act, it's cheaper and more memorable to hear a programmer stumble through some lines than some "career VA" who can only sound like a 12 year old's impression of Goku.
There's literally no reason a player should be agaisnt voice acting in these games, especially when they're going out of their way to create atmospheres that demand voice acting.
Even if you're deathly allergic to English voices, miscasted voices, or whatever, a good dev would include decent volume options in the game.
> There's literally no reason a player should be agaisnt voice acting in these games
Why would I want the devs to waste time and money implementing a feature I won’t use?
I mean, it's implied there are more champions, there just haven't been any new ones recently. So Nemona's probably wiped all the other champions, too.
Geeta literally tells the MC Nemona held back in her champion's assessment vs Geeta and that she was so excited the MC came along, as there was no-one on her level and you had the best potential to reach it.
You two are the Paldean power couple - the two strongest trainers in the entire region.
It's kind of a meme/running gag to do this thing in JRPGs ever since Dragon Quest did it
They subvert it in some of the Paper Mario games where giving the wrong answer just instantly gives you a game over
1. It's utterly pointless and would add anything other than woefully poor performances. Especially on the western side of things.
2. It's GF. Just imagine how much shit they'd have to cut to fit that in.
Because frick you. Of all things they should spend anything on it's not voice acting. Voice acting in Breath of the Wild is a net negative. And if you've ever watched TPCi dubbed anime it's also a net negative. It's total fricking dogshit. Try playing Pokémon Masters with the dub it's fricking horrible. Not having voice acting is the correct decision.
All the fandubs of Nemona disappoint me because they're all so plain and don't have a hint of Spanglish. That's fine for the Pokemon anime but Masters has tempered my standards of premium Pokemon voice acting.
Because they've got other shit they need to fix first
The fact that this even became a point of interest among the fanbase just shows how not even you idiots have your fricking priorities straight, so how the frick do you expect Game Freak to
as an esl, i'd be fine with voice acting. english gets the low effort trash, not the other relevant languages
but we're talking pokémon, so tpci's filthy hands would be all over the thing... same bottom tier as the anime.
so let's pass on that
The directors would literally explode hearing non-japanese voices in the translated games
A guy asked Ohmori and Masuda just that in the SwSh media cycle. Ohmori said it's because it would be too hard to do quality control on the voice acting across all releases, along with production itself being harder if all dialogue needs to be voice acted.
Masuda then said that he personally doesn't like voice acting in games because it annoys him if a character's voice is different than how he imagines it.
>laziness and autism
If true, can't say I expected less

Masuda is based for once. I have a lot of fun imagining how the characters would sound.
These are literally the best responses. I hate hearing shitty English voice acting that sounds nothing like what I picture the characters having. Thank god for these two, I never want to hear VA work in Pokemon. Shitty fake job.

I would prefer Japanese VA with English subs, I'm surprised at how many games I just use the Japanese audio in retrospective
>OBVIOUSLY HAVING LIP SYNCING is as fricking bad as the PS1 era of gaming where there was voice acting, but all the characters mouths were closed.
ADX has literally made middleware to mitigate lip-syncing issues as far back as the PS2 era.
*CRI, not ADX
>there was voice acting, but all the characters mouths were closed
name 5 games other than MGS1 where this happens
You should reply to to the person who said that, not the one whose quoting it.
good idea
Then the MC in PLA has voice like Link for no reason. I hate these lying frickers. I hate Masuda the most because he always have some fricking moronic anwers

Both are correct.
Ohmori and Masuda are based in these regards. Who the frick want to keep hearing a fricking brit woman as a female VA again?
>quality control
As if they've been doing any of that the past few years.
One of the only times that I can say “Based Masuda”, pokémon never had voice acting other than some stafium announcers and it would just sound pretty weird if there was voice acting
What a fricking autist
>hard to do quality
are they genuinely afraid of another zelda CD-I?
no they've just played other video games
>because it annoys him if a character's voice is different than how he imagines it.
Unironically based opinion. He knows he can't have full creative control over localization since that's TPC's job, so it's inevitable that out of the many languages Pokemon officially supports, one of them will have a voice that doesn't suit his personal beliefs.

If anything they should do JP voice acting and JP only
voice acting in JRPGs is fricking dogshit 99% of the time
Mandatory (you) as this is a true statement and VAgays will ignore it as usual
It's dogshit only at USA dub, just like all USA dubs. The British dub at Xenoblade Chronicles is great.
>what is voice volume
>what do you mean every other AAA game got it today
Honestly, I don't trust TPCI & GF to let us choose text and voice languages seperately so it's probably for the best.
It's pretty obvious it's just time concerns and rushed development. You can tell by the way the cutscenes are shot and directed that they were made with voice acting in mind. It's jarring as frick to see the characters emote and even move their mouths accurately and hear nothing .
Source: my ass.
Laziness, incompetence, the usual
Unless voice acting is extremely, extremely high quality I'd rather not have it at all.

The biggest problem with VA will be the English version will be filled with trannies to appease the yanks because they don't understand nuance.
There's literally no reason a player should be agaisnt voice acting in these games, especially when they're going out of their way to create atmospheres that demand voice acting.

> There's literally no reason a player should be agaisnt voice acting in these games

Thinking objectively, it's probably because they don't outdo the anime at casting choice.
Voice actors cost money and you'll still buy it anyway even if there isn't any voice acting.
Wait for the characters to be added to Masters then you can imagine their voices when you read their dialogue
Masters did good until Dawn now has a lisp.
all i want is voice acting or something like splatoon voices if they're gonna pretend like they're singing
wtf she actually says that?
Yup
If there were more champions, would that change our relationship?
I mean, it's implied there are more champions, there just haven't been any new ones recently. So Nemona's probably wiped all the other champions, too.
Geeta literally tells the MC Nemona held back in her champion's assessment vs Geeta and that she was so excited the MC came along, as there was no-one on her level and you had the best potential to reach it.

I hate this. Why even have dialog options.
It's kind of a meme/running gag to do this thing in JRPGs ever since Dragon Quest did it
They subvert it in some of the Paper Mario games where giving the wrong answer just instantly gives you a game over
Because it would be the same dogshit voice actors that every anime game gets in the west and with no option to choose japanese voices
People forget that JA va demand CEO tier wages while Western VA are very uptight and selfish with their request. VA is a money pitfall.
1. It's utterly pointless and would add anything other than woefully poor performances. Especially on the western side of things.
2. It's GF. Just imagine how much shit they'd have to cut to fit that in.
I mean fair, I'm sure we'd end up losing another quarter of the dex or something because smarr indie companyuru
Only morons are asking for every text box voice acted, and only morons aren't asking for the cutscenes voice acted. They're so awkward being silent.
Unrelated question but are the only post game activities raids and the school tournament?
>He didn’t unlock the NTR graphic novel at the end
God I unironically wish. I want to cuck Nemona so bad by choosing Arven over her.
Because frick you. Of all things they should spend anything on it's not voice acting. Voice acting in Breath of the Wild is a net negative. >Yandere hyper competent class student council president
Pokemon is turning into a romcom
Because they would get shit voice actors. Look at Masters, 90% of the voices suck and are annoying.
I hope Roxie's in your 10%
Pokken is the big one. Nia is fricking terrible in English. Fricking Atlus have to localize shoe string budget games and get far better VA's.
>If anything they should do JP voice acting and JP only.
i think is becaus pokmon is toodler series and the stories are not that heavy or serious like other jrpg
SV and Sun/Moon had some heavy themes involving parents.
I'm pretty sure they'd somehow find a way to make the game more glitch and laggy with the voices
Because they've got other shit they need to fix first
The fact that this even became a point of interest among the fanbase just shows how not even you idiots have your fricking priorities straight, so how the frick do you expect Game Freak to
Pokemon should have Star Fox/Banjo Kazooie style voice acting.
>Final boss villain as world becomes clouded and dark
>BUH BUH BUH BUH BUH
>TPCi voice acting
Please no, they already ruined the ashnime dub
Gamefreak is cheap. I'd only expect them to add voices once text to speech AIs get advanced enough to do convincing emotions with minimal effort
as an esl, i'd be fine with voice acting. english gets the low effort trash, not the other relevant languages
but we're talking pokémon, so tpci's filthy hands would be all over the thing... same bottom tier as the anime.
so let's pass on that
The FE cast was busy.
The games are buggy shit they should probably work on that first before adding fluff
