No reason for any big company to set up here when the rest of the world has better institutions and pipelines to produce game devs that will cost you less, are more disposable+replaceable
Any game dev here is probably hard capped on their career and would just leave the country for better opportunity

You either work for the banks, the mining companies or some niche engineering concern if you're good enough to be a good game dev, everyone else pays like shit

      Anonymous

there are some good government jobs if ur a dev too
they don't pay as well but there is 0 overtime or crunch and they pay for you to take classes and get certs if there is anything you are interested in because of push of upskilling dev's by the gov

    we make a couple
but large studios don't work here because they just get poached by overseas companies because the country deincentivized any tech stuff for years and now they are wondering why they have no one in the field who is any good and they all fricked off
there is a good chunk of indie developers though and some small studios

it might change going in the future because they are trying to build it up a little, but they are doing kind of a shit job of it so we will see
gaming is super popular here and a very large % of the population plays them (as in greater than many other countries), as well as many of the people who visit here playing them so I wouldn't be surprised if we get some more going despite the gov rather than because of them, as long as they aren't acting against devs like they used to I can believe the space will grow.

There's no middle class, liberals gutted them by placing the tax burden on them and giving loopholes to their mates or selling off to foreign investors all the while cutting social services like education and medicine and any funding that doesn't serve mining or gambling because those are the rackets they belong to. Every time Labor tries to balance it out the media attack them and the blue collar all start thinking it's Labors fault. So Labor has basically stopped trying anything significant to stem the flow of money upwards and outwards. They barely even protect workers rights any more.

Aus is actually pretty hospitable to indie devs with government grants via places like Creative Victoria subsidizing half of development costs. However nobody wants to open up a studio because house/land prices and minimum wage and tax are way too high for such a high-risk business. So everything is stuck to low-budget dev in shared workspaces and communal inner-city living.
So the only indie devs are leftist city tards funded by a government that prioritizes diversity arts, and only once in a while do we actually make anything good.

Urban sprawl is the worst thing to happen to western countries.
Ideally, we would have decentralized cities dotted around with a medium population (less than 50k) linked up with decent transport and plenty of green space between.
However, we just get shit like Kalkallo where 6,000 people are crammed into a small area with horrific planning and a single entrance/exit. Imagine having to sit in traffic for an hour to leave your estate because you're not allowed to work where you live and there isn't enough commercial support for your needs so you always have to go elsewhere

If you make anything above minimum wage and can leave Australia, you do it. Australia is a disgusting hell-hole.
The economy is now permanently fricked. The AUD is already entering hyperinflation. The housing bubble is artificially maintained by the single most corrupt government in any English speaking nation, possibly anywhere outside China.
Australia produces nothing. It mines some things, sells real estate and worthless backwards degrees to Chinese nationals.
Due to a public obsession with neoliberalism, unions are in bed with government and multinational corporations, crushing the young and poor to maintain the obscene decadence of Australia's unelected ruling class.
Australia talks about democracy, but it is not one. If a given political party does not win, its votes are allocated to one of the two major parties, which have identical policy outside windmills and pronouns. This has resulted in the most entrenched, corrupt and anti democratic duopoly on the planet.
A culture of aggressive nannyism prevails over anything else and any dissent via extreme force. Australia, not the UK, is the home of "hurt you to keep you safe". Have anything nice? "why do you have to have that? We need laws against that". Everything from guns or weed to a blow off valve on a car (a factory component) or an electric scooter, even vapes. Why? Oh no, not "why". "why do you need to do the thing I don't want you to?" screech the insane, mouth-frothing Australian lunatics.

A disgusting country. Truly revolting. Australians are the worst westerners, closer by far to the Chinese communists in every way.

Burgers have to pay an arm and a leg to get them fixed and euros aren't allowed to own cars larger than 1.5L. Australia is a comfortable mix, but we have some easy room for improvement. Let's start by not importing 650,000 fricking people while we have a housing crisis

Australia is not remotely comfortable. Quit lying. Australia pays at least double what other countries do for vehicles, due to import taxes originally meant to prop up Holden. Never repealed.
The immigration is another problem, but it's made even worse by ENDLESS FRICKING RED TAPE ON EVERY SINGLE LITTLE THING.
            GST for example:
            Want an apple?
            GST on:
            >land

Australians are so desperate to pretend there aren't problems (because they're too lazy to attempt to solve them) that they'll aggressively lie to themselves and others ad infinitum. It's why Australia always will get worse and always will be a shithole; the general public is now mostly incapable of even admitting there is a problem, let alone working toward a solution. Australians will much sooner call someone a name, pretend not to care about an obvious problem, and consider themselves somehow superior (while they all wallow in shit together).

i remember an anon posted a screenshot here of a start up screen from an ausdeved indie game saying something like "our govenment didn't fund a dollar of this"

Australians are the worst westerners, closer by far to the Chinese communists in every way.

i'm the support work anon above ya and I've been really considering traveling lately, just work a bunch that I can and then go travel internationally for a few months. Never done it before, I love aus and have found myself comfy, I think I need to get out of here for a bit.

Why doesn't Australia have a proper 'Trades' system like every other country on the planet.

Basically for the first 1-2 years apprentices are losing money for their employer (or straight up only used to go to bunnings to pick up supplies) . Why does this country tolerate such a moronic system?

      Anonymous

you lose money those first two years cause your boss is meant to be buying you tools and equipment for your job & your role. Not pissing it up the wall at the TAB at lunch, your subsidised but it's out of your control and left for your boss to monitor for the first two years. Trades aren't fricked, their just not being held accountable

I apprenticed at a engineering corporation and was forced to buy $10000 worth of tools from the corporation, and I haven't used 99% of them in 3 years.

          Anonymous

They could've gifted you those tools, but they chose not to. Making a sale is alot better then a tax break in the long term. But your meant to be grateful for the opportunity which is why when they told you that you had to buy them, they waited until the sale was done before they said it was ring brought from them. Sounds about right

tradies don't want lots of new tradies apprentices coming in because it would reduce the rates they can charge

      Anonymous

That's an absolute load of shit, very few apprentices keep any job where they aren't making their boss money within the first year, they get treated like shit, paid frick all, and then left on the side of the road when they break their back while the govt just goes on spitting lies at the next generation of apprentices about how they'll ass frick any boss that gets them hurt on the job.

      Anonymous

the state government power/water/electric network companies used to take on huge numbers of apprentices and train them up well and they'd move on to private industry after a couple of years working.

that's how most boomers got their career starts. Of course nowadays it's all cut back to practically nothing so unless your dad has a mate who will take you on even getting an apprenticeship is hard.

    1. Being an entrepreneur is a slur
    2. Innovation is a slur
    3. Zero Government support for small businesses in tech
    4. Private investment (banks + super) have extremely strict investment laws attached to them, so they can't invest in risky projects (i.e. an upcoming game dev)

Every single aussie game dev I know who hits it off moves to the US, sometimes Europe. There is absolutely no room for you in Australia to do something tech based. Either you become a doctor, lawyer, accountant, miner or tradie or you get ridiculed.

Even small business owners who become successful get put down if they talk about their success. Australia has a really backwards view on success, complete opposite of the USA "Dream big go hard and become successful". Lots of tall poppy syndrome.

I am actually close to paying my off outright potentially, will have to go over finances etc to make sure I haven't accidentally done anything dodgy with taxes+centrelink etc. However ignoring that, anons should I just pay my HECS debt asap and outright? I'm living at home with minimal on going expenses, hell if I didn't end up getting briefly addicted to escorts I probably could have paid it off already.

I paid mine off naturally, but my debt wasn't that huge to begin with (20-25k?) and I'm currently earning almost 130k per year. However, this was also during the lowest interest rates and inflation I think we've ever seen.
It might be worth paying off now that inflation/interest is going nuts and will only make your HECS debt rise with it.
Once mine naturally paid off, I just didn't update my details and they keep taking the money out, to give back at tax time. yeah, I know it's probably better to have the money in each pay packet and invest it/pay off house, but getting an almost 10k tax return each tax time is a great feeling, helps with the bills that come around that time and makes me live within my means due to ~$200 less in my pay each fortnight. I think that's well worth the $50 I could have made investing it.

It's very shit. This is a map of 2 bedroom rentals for 400/week or less in an area with 4 million people on our equivalent of Zwillow. Each of these listings will have 30+ people rock up to their inspections that they have 3x a week. The listings will all be gone within days.

QLD is shit now mate, it is just rich c**ts, frickwits and meth heads. The place was overpriced with crap wages a decade ago, now it is even worse because everyone moved there because of covid. I moved down to Melbourne and it is cheap as. I pay so little down here that I spend all my free time working on my video game.

What's more important is that you're complaining about something that isn't even a quarter of your income, meaning you're blowing money elsewhere

              Anonymous

              >2020
Right before house prices became fricked. You waited any longer you'd have been as fricked as I am right now. Rent back then was also significantly less, and the property I was renting in 2020 for $250/week is now $400/week. I am going to assume you were also paying incredibly cheap rent, or living with your parents (or getting help with a deposit) to save money. Buying a house on 45k/y is not the norm, and don't think or act like it is. You clearly have outlying variables you aren't sharing beyond "durrr I just save really well"

              >What's more important is that you're complaining about something that isn't even a quarter of your income, meaning you're blowing money elsewhere

I don't live with my parents. I'm in a sharehouse and have to pay $380/week for a bedroom and a study because that's how shit rent is here. The rest of my money goes into savings, stocks and super. I live off about 3k/month for groceries, bills and rent.

    Here's how you fix Australia.

Australia's issue is anti-intellectualism. Instead of idolizing scientists, engineers and political strategists, we worship footy and rugby players and tradies

Tradies should be mocked, spat at and beaten. They're the most replaceable, most bottom-of-the-barrel people in this country and they will not get us anywhere. They get paid too much and always ask for cash so they pay no taxes. They are lazy and do shoddy jobs, no one trusts tradies anymore. We are entrenched in mediocrity because little Timmy would rather go stack bricks instead of becoming a nuclear engineer.

Dole budging should be a major offense on par with tax fraud and dole bludgers should be pressed into military service. We should have mandatory military service too because we are going to be invaded by China.

We need more police too, and bogans should be hunted down and summarily executed. The amount of times there's been a loud uncouth bogan on the train and I've wished that two cops would enter the train at the next stop, grab the bogan by the collar and drag him out on to the platform and then shoot him dead as the train pulls away is too many to count. Bogans contribute nothing to Australian society, they are fifth columnists and domestic terrorists.

TL;DR all non-productive elements of Australian society should be forced into the military, academia needs more funding and immigrants should be funneled into a new manufacturing industry after serving a year as conscripts.

        >Timmy would rather go stack bricks instead of becoming a nuclear engineer.
Why would anyone study that here? We will never jave a nuclear program. Not reading the rest of your blog

So we can manufacture our own nuclear submarines instead of having to buy them. Australia is going to be attacked by China and invaded, we need to be heavily armed and prepared.
We need missile silos everywhere in the outback

We're an immensely resource rich country of only 27 million. If China takes Australia they can conquer the world.

America would only send a contingent but not their whole army.

And nothing in your argument rebuffs the point that we are undermanned and under prepared to fight China because we will be going to war with them this century unless Xi gets couped and they back down.

ASIO needs to put all of their resources to rooting out fifth columnists and Chinese sympathizers. They should all be put on domestic terror watchlists.

Lawyers are scum of the earth and programmers have been replaced by indians who outsource all their work to infosys. Most people do fake jobs now like being some admin officer who manages a database no one needs or even worse writing 30 page reports on why they need the indians from infosys to make them what is basically a excel spreadsheet. Then that will get knocked back because the indians and the old white manager in IT need it to be on the cloud for 4x the cost (their entire wealth is just in microsoft, AMD and investment properties for more indians)

Both, Melbourne has hipster suburbs like Northcote and Fitzroy which are the Brooklyn/Portland of Australia. But also has the CBD (inner city) which has almost 0 white people living there, only Chinese

I was there yesterday and I would be exaggerating if I said that 10% of the people I saw were white. I was also in a big elevator with 20 or so people and it was fricking full with no wiggle room and I was the only white guy in there, the rest were Indians and Chinese. I just loathe going to Sydney in general now.

I'm from Melb, but it's much the same. Maybe a bit more than 10% depending on time of day and area. The big city cbds are international hubs these days. And since immigration isn't really changing ("halving" our intake is still 250,000 a year) things won't change in those parts.

Yeah, we are not changing course this late into the voyage, so I'm just gonna go with the flow. Still, when I go to more rural inland areas, I do notice that the percentage of whites goes down by 2% or something every year or so, but that just may be confirmation bias in action. We got to house these new Australians somewhere, and Australia is massive, but nobody is willing to swallow their pride and live outside of major population centers and frick off to the outback.

My dad likes to fancy himself as a good lefty person but we went into the city together a few weeks back and he hadn't been in the city for quite a while and was shocked to see how overwhelmed it is Asians. Mr "I support open borders immigration" starting going on and on about he couldn't see any white people anywhere.

I lived in the CBD a few years ago and I didn’t see one white person living in my building. My parents visited me once and practically had a stroke. After all the migration of the past few years, I can’t imagine what it’s like now

                >immigration is a left wing policy
Immigration's a funny one. The liberal right wing support it because immigration equals cheap labour and more investors into the property market to keep housing prices going up. More people also means the GDP goes up. The progressive left like it because multiculturalism.
But the classical left tend to frown on it because it threatens worker solidarity, unions and increases labour supply. Meanwhile nationalist right wing hate it because most immigrants form their own cultural communities and take generations to assimilate into the broader culture and national identity (let alone racial differences).
Long story short immigration isn't going anywhere because the LNP and ALP both like for economic reasons (their bribes from donors), the greens are progressives.

There are close to 0 Whites, but it’s not just Chinese who are there (I don’t know if that has ever been the case). There are all other types of Asians (as in East and South-East), pretty close in proportion to their global populations, as well as a significant (at least 15%) Indians (as in, all South Asians).
Southbank, for example, was 70% non-White in 2016, but only 13.2% Chinese (followed by 4.6% Indian).

I've lived in NYC too and it's much better than SF. Far safer, less homeless, way more things to do. SF likes to think of itself as a mini NYC but it's not even close. It feels as if SF was hit by an apocalypse.
