the first version they shipped had some bugs like missing HUD elements for certain enemies and all bosses. There's also a game crashing bug if you leave certain scrolls up on the screen for too long which can happen if you just read them. I have this version of the game and it's still playable but I have had it crash. They shipped out an updated build which I think most roms use anyways.
The Xbox version should be fine. The PlayStation version doesn't let you have more than like 2 items in your inventory which kinda defeats the arcade purpose of the game imo
i was really young when i saw that in arcades, i only played light gun games like time crisis. didnt it have some kind of persistent password based save system also? never brought a pen with me or anything to write with.
Fair enough. I don't recall if the arcade versions had multiple file slots or not. I do know they had at least one rolling save, so you could come into a cabinet that was way further along in the game if I recall. I know Gauntlet Legends on the N64 had save slots, presumably the XBOX version of Dark Legacy did too.
God I wish we had easy games like that now. No overbearing story, poorly designed huds or cumbersome inventory management. Just a linear, lighthearted jump in with friends and kill shit.
In the world of co-op yeah, it's insane how little good co-op experiences there are out there with how many games are released that you can just pick up and have fun with
Not really a save system, per se. it was a lot like making an account on the cabinet. You had your three initials that you would put in and then a 3 digit code, and then it would let you pick from your characters and unlocked stages, with all your progress and items intact. It was pretty sweet because you could be running solo at a low level and some dude could ask to play and then load in as his Level 47 Wizard or whatever and kick ass with you.
God I wish we had easy games like that now. No overbearing story, poorly designed huds or cumbersome inventory management. Just a linear, lighthearted jump in with friends and kill shit.
Everybodys too much of a pussy to try new shit, I’d rather have more unique games that are worse quality than the same 6 games each year and nothing else.
They actually captured the spirit of dark legacy pretty well with the exception of a much smaller roster. Had some really bizarre technical issues though that made longer runs kind of a chore.
gauntlet games do exist its called diablo/path of exile/lost ark. Games like pic related are cool but mass appeal and money drives the market. normies would not buy this game
I would kill for a proper new Gauntlet game. Dark Legacy is still one of my favorite titles of all time, and it kills me how little appreciation people have for how immaculately designed the levels and gameplay were. You usually end up with child molesters like that end up comparing them to ARPGs, and there's nothing in that genre that properly compares to how Gauntlet's levels took advantage of 3D space and scale, or how they were structured to really sell the feeling of conquering a level with a huge frickoff battle in it. Those castle levels where you see all the mobs in the courtyard and rampart from above as you're fighting through another section of it? Fricking perfection.
Feels like it wouldn't be too hard to make as well, if shooting to make something comparable to Legends/Dark Legacy but with new levels, a better framerate (without uncapping CPU in emulators), and preferably online. I think people have just moved on from these sort of games, and anything similar they'd prefer to play as a roguelike.
It was a great game to play with friends. My favourite moments were israelite looting chests or having someone israelite loot them from you and death pops out. Super funny when you have the deaths hand itema nd you give him the suck instead
I feel like Survivors games and Wariors games are the inheretors of Gauntlet.
They have the same focus on slaying hordes of enemies. Survivors takes it and turns it into a roguelite with overpowered weapons and Warriors games add (sligthly) more complicated 3D action game controls, but I can see both taking inspiration from Gauntlet.
It’s been long enough that I’m gonna have to go out and make new friends in order to make it happen again. I’ve only managed to get one on one hangs in video games going for the last several years.
Me and three of my childhood friends still get together at least once a month to hang out. Last time we played a bunch of Mario Kart.
Last year we’ve been getting more into board games, and we were super hooked on Talisman for a while. Shit was great.
I still regularly get together with five or six friends to play board games, video games, and for dinner and shitty movie nights [s]and we're all in our 40s[/s]
Based friend haver. We’re all 29-30, I hope they’re still around when I’m a decrepit frick like you
On a scale of 1 to 10 how awkward would it be to ask an online chum to be an irl chum?
I've known this guy for like 17 years, always kind of wanted to hang out or something.
I knew a guy through Newgrounds for 9 years before he moved to my town to take a class with me.
He’s one of my very best friends, and feels almost like a brother.
Dark Legacy is absolutely brainless. Without the threat of an arcade timer the entire game is rendered extremely easy, it's basically impossible to lose. Nonetheless a 10/10 game
I remember playing it with a bunch of friends at a sleep over. It was literally like all those nostalgic 90s images that ppl share here, where mom orders Dominoes w/breadsticks and Coke. We played that and Smash bros, Goldeneye of course. I rented it a few weeks later from Blockbuster and it just wasn't as fun alone. It's really the friends that makes certain games what they are.
All of the loot-related shenanigans, the announcer's voice, the secret bonus levels with unlockable dudes, running from Death or icing his b***h ass with a potion... yeah I'm thinking this game is a frickin 10/10 (with friends)
Forgot about anti-death. I haven't played it with friends in probably like a decade at this point, and I've only played maybe like twenty minutes of it by myself since then
Is this game not worth playing single player?
I mean, you could play it single-player, but it's definitely a party game. It's not nearly as fun as Robotron or even Smash T.V. played alone. The level design in this game is fun to explore with your fellow players but just ends up feeling like busywork if you play it solo. Half of the game in Dark Legacy is competing with the other players for your fair share of gold, food and powerups.
Just my opinion, of course. I wouldn't begrudge anybody who wants to play this game solo
I played it on my own back in the gamecube days and enjoyed it for what its worth. Its fun to see all the crazy level designs they come up with and the fact it has visual character progression as you level up was enough of a hook for me to see it through.
>had this game for the gamecube growing up >hated the fact that the boss HP meters were gone >just found out a few weeks ago that there was an updated version where this got fixed >never once heard about it or knew about it from anywhere back then
Looks cool. Never heard of it.
Begone zoomer
it's kino. I recommend either the Xbox or GameCube version but make sure it's the updated GameCube version
There's an UPDATED version?
the first version they shipped had some bugs like missing HUD elements for certain enemies and all bosses. it's not very deep, but its very fun with a buddy
sound design is awesome, levels and bosses are memorable
be warned though, core combat is basic
is this a port of the arcade game they had at bowling alleys/arcades?
Yes
might play it i never had enough money to play that and i remember the game was pretty confusing at the time being so young.
???
Walk around, kill monster, collect powerups. That's fricking it, how is it confusing you fricking moron
i was really young when i saw that in arcades, i only played light gun games like time crisis. didnt it have some kind of persistent password based save system also? never brought a pen with me or anything to write with.

Ttue.
one of these days I will own a dark legacy cabinet
The last gen gauntlet reboot was pretty fun
They actually captured the spirit of dark legacy pretty well with the exception of a much smaller roster. Had some really bizarre technical issues though that made longer runs kind of a chore.

Diablo gays are soulless, pay them no mind
The frick is wrong with child molesters?
Probably the hypocrisy.
No, I mean like, what's wrong with being one.
Morons.
They didn't play enough Dark Legacy
that they're free

Midway ran out of arcade games to port and promptly keeled over.
When was the last time you and four friends sat down together to play a game.

Be excellent to each other and you'll be friends for life
I love weird Hollywood pictures like this, don't mind if I share 3.
On a scale of 1 to 10 how awkward would it be to ask an online chum to be an irl chum?

just beat him up after you suck his dick and it's not gay
I don't want to suck his dick, I want to like, go to a barbeque place and maybe an arcade
hey man whatever you want I'm not into all that gay lingo so have fun tossing his salad or whatever
Sounds fun, do it
Just go for it. I bet it’ll be fun.
The sound design in this game was godlike. I always played as the Jester.
arpgs and musou were the evolution
still love playing dark legacy on my ps2
for me it's the red wizard
>we want the Pandemonium audience
Dark Legacy is absolutely brainless. Without the threat of an arcade timer the entire game is rendered extremely easy, it's basically impossible to lose. Nonetheless a 10/10 game
They still make mediocre multiplayer games by the thousands.
YOU ARE NOW ENTERING _______
Loved that Gorillaz album that opened with a sample of that
I remember playing it with a bunch of friends at a sleep over. It was literally like all those nostalgic 90s images that ppl share here, where mom orders Dominoes w/breadsticks and Coke. i miss that trend of arcade revivals in 3D. Pong PS1 was godly.
>black woman with afro
Ganker would shit its diaper
>Warrior needs food
>elf steals all the food
A tale as old as time.
Because boobs exist
All of the loot-related shenanigans, the announcer's voice, the secret bonus levels with unlockable dudes, running from Death or icing his b***h ass with a potion... yeah I'm thinking this game is a frickin 10/10 (with friends)
Keep the anti death on you, you can steal an entire level from the xp death with it
Forgot about anti-death. I haven't played it with friends in probably like a decade at this point, and I've only played maybe like twenty minutes of it by myself since then

Is this game not worth playing single player?
It's worth playing through at least once to see all the levels and bosses but it gets boring fast.
I played it on my own back in the gamecube days and enjoyed it for what its worth. Its fun to see all the crazy level designs they come up with and the fact it has visual character progression as you level up was enough of a hook for me to see it through.
Spawners suck and makes some parts seem hopeless, like trying to clear a chokepoint while 3 spawners shit out ghosts non stop.
that's what the supers and items are for
For me it's the classic NES game:
>characters change appearance every 10 levels and gain familiars
soul
>had this game for the gamecube growing up
>hated the fact that the boss HP meters were gone
>just found out a few weeks ago that there was an updated version where this got fixed
>never once heard about it or knew about it from anywhere back then
