games made for crts have near instant response times built into them, they also expect you to to be pixel perfect, 2-4 frames of lag make the games FAR harder to play they they use to be.
however if the hardware is powerful enough you can set up run ahead, and can compensate for all lag beyond lcd absolute response time, but its as good as we will probably ever get.
and for a real world example, punch out nes, edge of human response time, near unplayable in emulation till run ahead.
I bought a rg35xx plus. Having some fun with it and can see it coming in handy when I do some long travelling. I spent about a week researching it and setting up about 128gbs of ROMS but end up playing a homebrew tetris GBA game.
I think they are best suited for GBA style and and or pixel art games (e.g. Castlevania, Bomberman) despite being able to handle PSX. At the end of the day it's for portability and if I am going to be sitting on my couch I would probably get a 'deck or game at my desktop. It is cool seeing FF7 and MGS on the little screen however.

3ds and vita are best when emulating native games. 3ds sucks at emulating anything outside of the 3ds and ds to an extent because closing the lid doesnt put the console to sleep. it runs the timer up. it's moronic. also vita emulation of ps1 looks bad. a r36s runs you 40$ and it does up to dreamcast. it's comfy to use and has a nice screen.

Thank you, PSP games look like garbage on the vita also. For that matter retroarch was broken as shit and abandonded on vita. Save feature doesnt work and save states have a 50% chance of crashing to vita desktop, so you couldnt play anything that required a save really
yep.. scaling up the psp to the vita screen just stretches it out. it's not actually 2x rendering or anything. even if you download the scaler plugins it doesnt help much.
and yeah retroarch is laggy as hell on the vita. it was not worth the hassle to set up. i use my vita exclusively for vita games.. so pretty much just dragon crown kek.

Hacking my 3DS was great for this. I have a bunch of SNES, GBA, and DS games on there now. They all work great when you turn them into cia files and use the built-in virtual console.
The issue is that, where I live at least, buying 3ds consoles, even second hand, is too expensive. I'm not paying 200 dollars for what is essentially a dead console that I'm gonna use almost exclusively to play emulated GBA and NDS games, and when I go down to the 100 dollar mark all I can find is consoles that are clearly fricked up
I'll keep an eye out for them, because I've been meaning to get one for a while now, but that specific market looks grim where I live

Chinkshit devices are made using bargain bin components that are typically already manufactured or can be manufactured cheaply using existing specifications and processes. It costs 3-10x more money to specify a custom component that has never been made before. This is why most of the vertical handhelds use the exact same 3.5" 640x320 IPS screen. It's the same product. They're buying it from the same source.
Even the 2 OLED handhelds that use a 4.9" screen have the same specifications as the Vita. It's the same resolution. It's the same size. Why? Because it's literally the Vita's screen. It simply costs too much money to make a new screen, much cheaper to buy bins of old Vita screens and put it into a new handheld

I had one. The flex cable for the touchscreen digitizer broke two times on it. I also didn't like the touchpads. It also only worked because they could get away with phones being thicker as they weren't that large. It was nice that you had access to a controller in a second from taking it out of your pocket, but it didn't have any good games and whatever you could emulate on it wasn't really fit for portable play.

I have a miyoo mini+, it's great. But I need a clamshell device, it's not pocketable, especially with the poor build quality where the screen pops out if you sneeze while holding it. I prefer my phone in almost all scenarios because those cheap handheld devices can barely run anything unless you spend $200+ and at that point, even though it's not traditionally portable, I'd rather get a deck.

Anything older than DS is borderline unplayable without screen mods, not to mention you can't play consoles and arcade.
The extremely cheap ones run Linux on an SD card with Retroarch, some standalone emulators and (usually) EmulationStation as frontend, games are either loaded from a secondary SD slot or from the OS SD.
The cheaper ones run Android from internal storage.
Only a few select models get alternatives to stock OS, either because no drivers, no demand, or it just werks.

I got my rg3xxh about a week ago. I like it since I can throw it in my pocket and take it put during quick downtime at work. I do have a deck and ally if I want to emulate more powerful stuff.

that screen resolution or size is dunb as frick for a retro handheld
it's a clean integer upscale for Gameboy, and every other varying retro resolution can integer upscale close enough with minimal wasted space. it also enables higher quality shaders.
640x480 is dumb as frick, except the fact that there's cheap as frick LCD panels in that resolution.
doesn't matter when your system doesn't have a powerful enough chipset to make those shaders a worthwhile prospect, ain't nobody complained about the 3DS top screen having an 800x240 resolution

I don't know what bizzaro world you've been living in, but this has been one of the top criticisms of the 3DS family since 2011. Not even beating the PSP from 2005 in resolution was headline news. The fact that the 3DS integer scales DS and GBA so poorly is due to this problem.

Because Chinese handhelds have poor battery capacity and are disposable. Ever noticed no one talks about their oldest Chinese emulator products?
Because the oldest products can barely even run GBA, if at all? It wasn't until 2-3 years ago that they started being more powerful and that's just a consequence of phone makers dumping their old chips.

I have that exact one and it was the best thing I purchased in 2023. Currently playing Final Fantasy Tactics and it's delifghtul, the screen is amazing for like 60 bucks.

i have used one, it's why i buy chinkhelds that also have dome switch dpads and gave my joycons a vita dpad with a shell mod
vita has nothing i want to play in its own library that isn't dynasty warriors, which runs like shit because it's a PS4 port and the system isn't strong enough for it, and dragon's crown, and beyond that it's an oled PSP/PS1 which i don't really care too much about
