Gambit system should have been used by more JRPGs and its a crying shame it didn't
Disgaea 6 and 7 have it now, and it's even more flexible than in XII. Had a blast programming it to do the grind for me, even very specific tasks like "Run in, steal item, get all the chests, murder the boss then use an item to flee the level so we can grind it until the escape items run out".

I'll never understand why people hate that hes someone unimportant to the overall story. A lot of MCs are literally hoodlum rats from the streets thrown into this massive crazy journey. And sure they usually get a backstory towards the end that shows they're actually someone very important but that's not always the case
Because they compare him directly to every prior MC thinking they're all superhuman monsters they can have power level arguments with. Ironically, Vaan is no less powerful, he ends up empowered by Espers, and capable of mist manipulation. All things being equal he could likely take a lot of FF protags on 1v1, not your Lightnings, Clouds or Zidanes to be fair, but Firion is just a dude who got caught up in a rebellion and gets good at using all kinds of weapons.
Vaan storywise has no agency as everything he did would have been done anyway by everyone else and he just invaded the story to be a camera for everyone's journey. But in game they made him have the best overall stat growth across all characters at the expense of one character having dogshit overall stat growth. He's the self insert. He had story beats but they never perused them in any meaningful way. Didn't help he was generally annoying.
I used to hold a similar opinion but replaying recently after having been exposed to much more fantasy writing, I have to disagree. He's vital to the group, I think it's similar to a lot of red rangers in Super Sentai (hear me out). There are a few archetypal red ranger personalities, mostly people think of the earnest hero who leads by example, but there's also the outsider, a wild man or just some normie who stumbles into the role, who is carried up on the whirlwind of the rest of the group who all seem to have these lofty goals and ways of doing things, and is the only one with a perspective different enough to cut through the bullshit. There are so many scenes where Ashe and others are having some huge debate with all these high concepts, and Vaan just cuts in with some "so we just need to go here and do that, why are we stood around talking about it?". He exhibits solid growth, he has just as much stake as the other characters in things, he's lost a loved one, and watching Ashe wallow in self pity while he gets shit done is a great contrast, and he clearly helps her get through her grief. Balthier is a very insecure character despite outward appearances and Vaan pure love of the same freedom he already has, and the way he looks up to him really seems to give him more genuine confidence rather than bluster.
I replayed this shit two months ago.

It's still based on how insecure the fanbase was after being caught playing FFX by their normie friends and family and made fun of them for playing a game with a "gay" character like Tidus running around on-screen. They were really worried when Square took the sex appeal to the next level by making him shirtless and even more feminine looking when they first revealed Vaan and Ashe in 2003.
He does have peak twink aesthetics, I'm not a gay but I can appreciate he's an attractive man. Part of the fun of getting into Japanese games was seeing these pretty boys who can still kick the shit out of people, when I was used to rugged, bearded men being the norm for action heroes. Rugged bearded men who are just as beloved by homosexuals as twinks, might I add, so I don't know what makes it less gay in the eyes of normies.

He is great to play in Duodecim. Like Lighting he has fast IDS weapon swap true combos
He was my go to pubstomp character in NT too, a lot of fast to throw out ranged abilities with lingering hitboxes that set people up for a full combo, great in a 1v1, super disruptive and easy to cut enemy combos on your teammates with.
Never got into NT but great to here he got some love. He's a good character in anything but his game

Every time I replay FFXII I get reminded that the main characters are actually Ashe and Larsa. The plot actually physically revolves around those two. I don't know why Larsa is just a temporary party member when he does so much heavy political lifting.
It is so funny how the FF12 fans have a huge division where one side likes to pretend that matsuno was fricked and didnt want Vaan on this story even when he already said how this isnt true. It is almost disrespectful because you praise the story while pretending that main narrative choices taken, like who is the protagonist, werent done by him.
