Because they haven't even perfected the 3D ones

      >implying 2D would be harder to do
2D games are constantly surpassing 3D games in atmosphere, combat, level design. It just seems weird that Maple Story is the only 2D MMORPG and it's from like 20 years ago

Are you forgetting how 3D assets are reusable for animations

Maplestory was the shit back in the day
    >awfully balanced game
    >no intricate guides and you were too young to worry about that stuff anyways
    >need to do hours of tedious grinding just to level up once
    >if you overcommit to damage you will miss enemies entirely
    >hope you didn't get enticed by that place called "The Dungeon" in the middle of Victoria Island early on or used all your mesos on the VIP taxi because if you did you're now stuck there
    >here's your quest bro, kill 999 mushrooms for a meager reward, also do this tedious jump quest also for a meager reward
    >oh and the jump quest has three parts too
    >nobody using discord etc
    >everybody is just hanging around in the game because it's more fun to socialize than actually play the game unless it's party quests
    >somebody offers to do a 'drop game' with you which sounds fun, oh look at that insane gear you could be getting from him what could go wrong?
    >defame somebody who pissed you off
    >he and his gang of buddies chase you around maps and channels trying to mass defame you
    >enter free market
    >sensory overload of @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
    >enter a ship
    >everybody fricks off to somewherez wonder to yourself where everybody went
    >start hearing bass slapping
it was an experience that could never happen in today's world

      >drop party
      >all the drops immediately shoot to the bottom-right corner of the map
      >some absolute nog vac-hacking
      >can't report him because you can't see his name

        hated that but also
        >PQ boss is killed
        >loot drops from it
        >try to take some loot
        >some absolute c**t with a pet vacuums everything before you
        >you got two Mana Elixirs

This except in the Sleepywood sauna and the items shoot up and offscreen because for some reason there's no ceiling and hackers can just fly off the screen.

      hearing bass slapping
Kino. I remember asking every high level if they were able to beat the balrog

The obvious limitations of the amount of room in an environment/instance/whatever. Maplestory worked well in that regard because characters are tiny and bosses are huge but the problem stays the same where generally you want to give players increasingly complex tools to strategize with and in 2D theres only so much shit you can have going on the screen without it getting cluttered.

Is the Maplestory mobile game any fun as an actual game that isn't like pay walled? I don't play any modern mobileshit and know nothing about them aside what I hear but playing a thief on touch screen sounds fun.

I played the mobile maplestory when there was a promotion that you'd get free shit in the actual game if you reached milestones in the mobile.
The mobile is absolute trash. It's mostly an idle-game.
You're given 2 free pets that pick stuff up for you and automatically use slotted potions.
Every day you get 2 hours of free autofarming time and throughout various quests and events, you get even more.
You just find a hunting ground and have your character automatically kill mobs hours upon end.
Questing is the same, you click the quest, it autoruns you to the npc giving the quest, you actually need to press the dialogue boxes manually, but after that, it automatically walks your character to wherever you have to go, to either talk to another NPC or kill monsters, it kills the monsters for you and walks you back to the quest giver. All of your attention in the game goes to pressing next quest whenever one is completed, you yourself don't have to do anything.

Most of your "gameplay" is managing the inventory and upgrading gear. The only times you get to play yourself are daily bosses. The bosses are timegated, they open at 11PM for 1 hour, next time at 6PM for 1 hour. There you actually have to manually walk up to the bosses and hit them with your abilities. If you have premium pets, they can also use buffs for you which you'd otherwise have to use manually.
So yeah, if you want maplestory-themed idle game, it's for you.

Damn thats what I was afraid of. It'd be really sweet if someone took advantage of the mobile market to make something similar to a basic and intuitive sidescroller beatemup like vanilla MS was. I just wanted to hop around throwing ninja stars at stuff and I'd drop $20 in cosmetics every once in a while like in the past.

touchscreen controls will never beat tactile
they give no feedback as to whether you're pressing the button or not, it's why mobile games will never go as far as puzzle games of varying degrees.

I mean they work good for basic shit like amongus which is why I was hoping the MS one would be decent.

Ragnarok already exists. If their servers didn't get hacked it would still be as popular as Runescape.

Maplestory has been out for 17 years, they've had all the time in the world to perfect it
The game's art is incredible, the amount of beautiful pixel art, animation, sfx and music there are in the game, any developer that started right now, couldn't catch up.
It's also a huge risk because 2D is very limited in terms of gameplay.

Maplestory is and will be the only one to ever exist, it's sad that it's not getting the traction it deserves.

They've nuetered the game from what it was to what it is now. It's not getting traction because they're slowly turning it into a solo experience over an MMO. Until you get to some absurd 250+ level you hardly even see anyone, even in towns.

      >only one to exsist
LaTale would like a word with you. Maple did a lot right back then, but so did LT. And the artstyle was phenominal, along with its OST. LT had a lot of fobby storytelling though, it was just never important enough to care. Maple used to be that way too, and now every class has an unskippable 1~2 hour long story section as soon as you create the character.

        >New update supposedly changes lots of stuff for explorers
        >Say why not and dip in after 3 years of not playing
        >10 minutes cut-scenes and dialogue of cringe shit nobody cares about

Why do the Koreans love shoving so much dialogue in their MMOs nowadays?

Ghost online was also pretty nice at the time.
