It's only really relevant in the states. The fact that it did so well with 360 is impressive. The sad reality is its gotten shittier every generation. OG Xbox was unironically better than ps2.

Unless they start marketing heavily in Europe, which is already entrenched pretty deep into Sony, they'll never win any gen. I can say though that in my opinion they won Gen 7. Yeah the PS3 edged them out in the end but back in those days all you heard about on the internet was 360.

It did better in the UK than the PS3

Microsoft mostly ignored mainland Europe with the OG Xbox, they failed spectacularly to break into Japan despite shitloads of marketing, had surprise success in Latin America(this is why so many Halo and Gears fans are spics) and were able to successfully establish a foothold in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Hell the reason Microsoft brought Halo MCC to PC was because of their failed attempt testing the waters with the Russian market.

They tried very hard during the 360 era. Got a bunch of JRPGs on it, specificlaly brought on the studio founded by the guy who created Final Fantasy to make games for the 360, advertised in Japan specifically to tout the "try the Americna console!" stuff, with pictures of Bill Gates holding both a hamburger and a 360 controller.

          Japan didn't give a shit.

Also the Kinect was completely unusuable in tiny japanese houses.

Sony was hellbent on fixing PS3. PlayStation makes loads for Sony, so they have to give a shit.

This is a homosexualy xboner cope. 360 only sold so well due to it being out 1 year earlier and about 100 shekels cheaper than the PS3, gaining a lot of steam from that. PS3 took over and beat it out even still, and you becoming ridden with dementia and forgetting the entire PS3 era of games doesnt mean it didnt happen, speaking of household names, remember games like uncharted and last of us launched on PS3, Black person.

Exactly, I myself owned one (1) silver named PS3 and it lives to this day just fine over a decade later. We owned four (4) shitboxes as they all RRoDd and this was JUST in the 7 year timeline of xboxes. Dont know why my brother kept getting more

360 was the "platonic ideal of the Gen 7 console" but tripped over its dick at the finish line due to going full in on Knenct and then failed to have a consistent flow of system seller exclusives games for the entirety of gen 8 and is now just barely trying to course correct.

  19. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

For a brief period the 360 was the console to own. It had superior exclusives and often better multiplats like Bayonetta, GTAIV, and Dark Souls.
The downfall was the fact that it just didn't sell in Japan despite having strong exclusives. Once devs figured out the PS3, all the good shit got ported and abandoned the 360. From there Xbox went back to what it was always known for: The Halo Box.

They had their chance with the Xbox 360, they blew it.
It's hard to say who fricked up more: Sony, that was somehow able to destroy their brand after an entire decade of complete domination of the console market.
Or Microsoft, that was miraculously able to BTFO Sony with a faster, cheaper, earlier console with more and better games... until in 2009 they said "you know what, we should stop supporting this thing from now on!"

Much of the success of the PS4 was thanks to how Sony supported the PS3 from 2009 to 2013.

360 absolutely smashed it in both markets that matter - usa and europe
Snoy had to start producing the ultracheap ps3s for huehues and other subhumans to be even able to reach 360s numbers - that doesn't affect the outcome at all.
MS fricked up badly with rrod, but they've recovered gracefully. Unlike snoy with ylod.
Every single multiplat game ran better on 360, ps3 struggled to have any memorable titles of its own

    conclusions:
-360 beat ps3 in seventh generation in all valuable markets but japan

The average 360 user had to buy four 360s because they kept getting the red ring.
The install base of the xbox was far tinier than it appears.
Nobody liked the xbox, that's exactly why the Xbone went right back down to the same market penetration as the original xbox.

I only had a 360 slim and never ran into this issue, I guess it was fixed by then. My fondest memory with that console was feeling relaxed playing the first Forza Horizon. Comfiest racing game ever.

                >This console was close to winning the console wars of the 7th gen
it won the 7th among adults and good vidya connoisseurs - nobody remembers your favourite "halo killers", Diego.

Because it was part of a brutal campaign of extermination with an end goal of attaining a stranglehold on the market. The 360 itself was cheap, overmarketed junk and used that market pressure to proliferate bad design practices that gimped every other competitor while also twisting many genres into misshapen abominations.
Even if Xbox is now considered one of the staple competitors in the console business, you may as well ask why no one fondly remembers internment camps even though America won WW2.
Microsoft strategy is split into 3 parts: embrace, extend, extinguish, and these are split up between the original Xbox and the 360. It is only logical for your subconscious to recognize it as distasteful and abhorrent.

I remember as a kid I didn't know a single other kid with a PS2. Everybody I knew either had an Xbox or a Gamecube. I had a couple friends with PS1s though. The only people I met who had PS2s were people I met after the PS3 came out and even then, not very many of them. I remember learning that the PS2 was the most popular console that gen seemed ridiculous. Maybe there was just some strange anomaly in my neighborhood.

It was a console with significant technical issues that made up a significant portion of its supposedly lower price with a subscription plan. It ruined porting for the duration of its life cycle by introducing bullshit like GFWL and Xinput. It popularized moving away from dedicated servers maintained by the playerbase and towards shit like P2P matchmaking. It pretty much started the moviegame bandwagon by popularizing game genres on a console that could not effectively play them without holding the player's hand at all times or significantly cutting them down, which ended up necessitating an approach of smoke and mirrors to make the player think they're actually in control etc etc.
It was one big attempted sweep to corner the market and it failed catastrophically when the Xbone imploded but still did almost irreparable damage by fricking everything up and leaving the false impression that they did a good job up until that point because of all the marketing and normalgays.

It doesn't sell well in Japan. Xbox will never be best selling console because it simply doesn't exist in one of the most "important" markets. X360 was the console to have during most of the 7th generation, not the PS3 or the Wii (lol).

Having the highest sales is moot anyway. A PlayStation is very unlikely to ever reach PS2-level sales again because PlayStation and Xbox, unlike Nintendo's toys, compete directly against each other and cannibalize each other's marketshare.

The PS360wii gen was so weird as the Wii may have technically had the most sales but its hard to say it won. Like that gen flip flopped. At the start the Wii was winning, then the 360 was winning but by the end the PS3 was winning.

Xbox was ahead of its time, and not in a good way. Consoles did things in a particular way that is weird and alien to a PC developer, but that weirdness is why they held up against PCs costing many times more. The xbox on the other hand was not only a PC, but a hugely GIMPED pc. Not enough RAM, the bad kind of unified memory, lacklustre CPU despite the high clock speed, PC GPU and most importantly: DirectX. Which sucked really really hard back then. Words can't describe how awful DirectX programming was. You *had* to do it because under windows OpenGL performance was awful, but nobody enjoyed DX. Especially the non-graphics stuff.
But sadly, the Xbox was the future. Shitty architecture, online, subscriptions, DLC, it was all coming and nothing could stop it, the Xbox was just there too early while people could still hate it and choose to buy something else.
The 360 was never good. Take the shambles of DirectX10, mix in a CPU design from ten years ago running at high clock speeds (see the pattern) and a GPU that sounds like it was designed by the shareholders and put it all in a box poorly designed by people with no industrial design experience and you have the 360. Just because the PS3 was worse doesn't somehow make the 360 good. It was the worst gen ever. That Microsoft would manage to fail so hard thanks to their business practices is just even more hilarious.
And they haven't had anything but failure since then because Microsoft have never EVER understood what makes a console good, they just had 1 gen where they lucked into it and failed regardless.

        Anonymous

Tying it back into that identity probably wouldn't have done anything productive.
It needed to be something that could be distinctly talked about and the Wii 2 idea would have fallen into the same memory hole that the Wii U did.

          Anonymous

It wasn't really an entirely new product. It was always going to be called a wii. But wii u sounds like some dumb R.O.B. type addon. Meanwhile everyone understands that 2 means it's a straight up upgrade. The other problem is probably that most people bought wiis and only ever played wii sports the first week they bought it, so I see your point.

            Anonymous

2 doesn't quite fall into the "straight upgrade" category of perception. To start off, since the Wii pretty much firmly established the name pun (Wii = We), most people would think that it is just another gimmick add-on called the Wii Too if anyone mentioned it.
Secondly it's just a matter of number perception, people don't really assign value in linear progression of numbers, nobody thought the Xbox 360 was going to be the Xbox 361, it was all about using multiples of that number for their bullshots (even if it did end up being the Xbone and completely fricked it up). Even the latest Nvidia GPUs stopped properly incrementing when they breached the 1000 series.
Even if people did recognize that the Wii 2 was a successor, they wouldn't buy it because your stupid brain that can be fooled by the 1 cent difference in a 59.99 price tag would not rate it as worth it.
