    >shift and ctrl further away
In what way does it make sense? There’s zero benefit.

Because people constantly accidentally misplace their fingers

      More non-movement keys readily available?
I suppose for today's games where you don't really need more than W+Mouse1 and barely even have to aim it's a bit redundant, but for older games it's great.

ctrl and shift are still in range, and now you get another column to use

sure if you only use ctrl every other year, you're fricked if you have to hold it

Those functions move to A and Z, and you have shorter travel distance.

I've used esdf for RTS games before. It's handy for having more buttons within reach if my hand.

imo it moves my hand too far from tab/caps lock and makes shift modifiers more annoying to press. because of this I'm not really getting any more utility from it vs wasd.

    >pinky rests right in-between shift and z
    >big, important keys have their functions moved to little letter keys
    >all so that you have the possibility of uncomfortably stretching left for an extra column
    >even though you admit nobody does that on the already available right side
    It makes no sense.

      >I need a crutch of having some keys bigger then others
Low IQ. ESDF is superior, but I'll never use it simply cause I'm a lazy frick who REFUSES to rebind keys unless absolutely nessecary. And yes, I still use the F keys for skill hotkeys in D2

Momentum for user interfaces is one hell of a thing to break. It is why controllers stick to one basic layout and why WASD will take a loooong time to be replaced. I agree that ESDF is the superior choice overall for the sort of games where you'd want to use a keyboard for without going full RTS shortcut where it is fairly arbitrary butchanging people's default habits? Lol not gonna happen.

I eventually had to go back to WASD because of a couple games that wouldn't let me rebind and I got back used to it.
Tribes 2 was the one that first got me stuck in ESDF because it was one of the default control schemes you could pick.

ESDF just has weird alignment problems, and the main reason it existed was for shooters that have alternate fire modes because we didn't know about Quake 3 Arena keybinds yet. Once we started using wasd with qerfcxz -> in that order with 1234 (you can't really reach 5 and beyond depending how far most people can reach) we didn't need esdf anymore, but it should still be allowed to be configured that way anyways. Keybinding is an open and uncontrolled thing. Not supposed to hardbind anything unless it would literally break the ability to escape. Like when you accidentally unbind left click in windows on the mouse and can't left click anything anymore until you keyboard out of the problem.

I use a special key on my mouse that resets left click when I unbind the left click, so that I can use mouse left and right click for whatever I want it to do for games.

Minecraft is spying on everyone through their latest patch which turns off anonymous/off Telemetry Data Gathering. So I suggest everyone start using FPS/Quake 3 Arena pro keybinds because they are going to start using your play data to justify Spiritual Religion of Bedrock Edition if you aren't using mouse and keyboard to move around and spin and full keybinds for the toolbar to play like it's a shooter. They think you stand around and click stuff and would prefer being outside on your fone.

i can hardly hit F and id have to completely lift my hand off of WASD to reach G.
i use an MMO mouse and will map any button that goes beyond WASD, E, R, shift, TAB and space to it. yes, even the number row. though i guess it depends on how heavily you have to use the individual keys, especially in combination with WASD. pulling out a map is usually fine on a far away key because youll not be using WASD anyways but putting something like grenade on G is just beyond me. you need to be able to hit that button mid movement at a moments notice. its just too far away to practically use it.

For the same reason WASD caught on, namely that WASD is the default config.

The real question is why people don't use the arrow keys. They're right there.

Arrow keys or the superior numpad are for your right hand. Since the right hand is mousebound, those keys cannot be regularly accessed.
Arrow keys have no adjacent keys for bindings that are not movement.
Having your keyboard aligned for that means it is way off to the left so that your left hand rests at those keys.
When you want to do literally anything else, you will have to reach both hands over to the left even farther than you would if you just move your right hand back to j.
