I have, it's boring.
MMOs are boring. The lore is nonsensical, the gameplay content is designed in the typical triangle style, the community is flush with extremists on both sides of the spectrums, including autism.
Furthermore it's only getting more watered down with crossover content, not less. It's an MMO, just like all the others that failed before it. The difference is some people have grown up from playing MMOs and realized they're not an intrinsically enjoyable experience.
The only thing you can gain out of an MMO is a feeling of belonging to a social community, and if that's all you're there for, god bless you, but I'd like to make you aware of this thing called 'other human beings' and add that they can be interacted with in various ways that don't include FFXIV.
There is no thrill, there is no gameplay, there is no fun.
There is only grind, and grind you will.

I'm fairly poor and it will still take this entire console generation cycle to play the games I currently have. This is mostly because I'm really good at catching deals.

I played it before they made HW free.
So because I created my account before the new trial experience, my account is still "locked" to the original free campaign and I can't level past 60.
I played it up to a point where what'sherface gets kidnapped.
Then the game had the gall to tell me to feel sorry about the npcs who died, NPCs who I'd literally never spoken to and only met in passing while going back and forth from the waking sands, and that I should help bury their corpses to find "closure."
FF14 is not an RPG. In an RPG, you get to decide how your character acts and feels. At worse, it leaves your characterization open-ended so you can fill in the details.
FF14 is a visual novel. You have no agency. You act and behave exactly as the writers have written you to be, and it overrides what you created your character to be.
Can't argue with that; I think the weakest aspect is lack of character agency. I'm not talking main story differences but the written dialogue based upon what you say could easily be written to accommodate previous choices even if it's simple stuff like not burying people but rather doing something else menial befitting your roleplaying perspective. Also the fact I did the Coils Raid AFTER meeting Alisae in HW really ticked me off - "Oh thanks for helping me this time doing this"

70% of it doesn't matter, you can skip it and watch a summary on youtube. People say HW and ShB are the best expacs so you may pay more attention to those.

The quality so far have been 10/10 in side quest department.

Play whichever race you want except lalafel. Look up which world on your server is the roleplay one and avoid it like the plauge.
