Why haven't you taken the Japan pill yet, /vr/ collectors?
>seemingly infinite supply of cheap classic games for a fraction of the prices that their US / EU versions go for
>often also the pure original versions of said games rather than just localizations
>boxes and cartridges tend to be in pristine condition because Japanese collectors actually take care of their shit
>whole extra onslaught of quirky obscure creative region-exclusive titles, standing above and beyond the trash pile of overpriced generic platformers and sports games that you'll find littering Craigslist / Vinted / Ebay / wherever you get you get your retro gaming fix from
>shipping prices worldwide aren't even't that bad, you can order a whole bundle of acclaimed titles for the same overall price it'd cost you to get a loose Pokémon Red / Blue cartridge from an average Ebay seller these days
inb4 "b-but what about the region lock? - Japanese systems are also dirt cheap to obtain, plus some consoles like the Game Boy don't even have a region lock
inb4 "b-but I don't understand Japanese?" - It's retro gaming, most games you'll be getting aren't particularly narrative-intensive anyways, you don't need to be bilingual to play some shit like frickin' Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble
So why haven't you done it yet, anon? Are you gonna continue desperately struggling with the decadent western price-gouged retro gaming secondary market, or are you gonna embrace based Japan once and for all?
Because I know Japanese. I did actually buy Korokoro Kirby though, because it's one of the few games you can't emulate due to cart features.
Collecting shit is moronic. No point paying for physical roms.
>Muh rotting plastic
I use flashcarts.
I collect files on SD cards. However, Famicom, Super Famicom, and 3DO consoles have better game compatibility even without region locking.
Japanese* consoles
It's 2023, I took the "pill" back in the mid 00s when normies didn't care about retro.
Leave the japanese alone.
Yeah, I started importing in the very late 90s/early 2000s. It's pretty much too late now, because YouTube homosexuals have made "Wpic Nippon Gaming Haul vlog!!" videos a fad now, plus zoomzooms like Retrogayture endlessly shilling for deputy services. I already have 90% of what I want so it isn't a huge deal for me at this point, but it seems like CIB games are getting more and more expensive.
There's always been weird cases where certain Japanese releases have always been expensive, like the first Rockman, and even Rockman 2 (and it seems like the vast majority of Rockman 2 boxes are beat to shit for some strange reason), but now I'm seeing random, obscure, who gives a frick CIB games selling for $40+
People have been importing retro stuff for years now and it is affecting the Japanese market as well.
Somewhat related to this thread, I would like to shout out that one French guy that sold me a bunch of Japanese import Gameboy games on ebay for like a cent and a half and proceeded to delete his account and vanish from the internet. He’s a real MVP.
Importing from Japan is one of the best things zoomers have invented!
it's been a thing since the days of mail/call-in orders though
Also Japan
>one of, if not, the worse places for preservation
>Why haven't you taken the Japan pill
My throat is sore. I can't swallow any pill right now. Come back next week.
>So why haven't you done it yet, anon?
I live in Japan and I still emulate. Why would I wanna amass a bunch of junk?
reported to the npa
Prices in Japan have been shooting up because of homosexuals like you. Just buy a flash cart, it's cheaper and you won't further ruin yet another game market.
>Nooooo, only *I* have the right to enjoy the Japanese game market!!! Anyone who gets into it after me is ruining it!!!
I use a Mister for everything. I'm not contributing to your cancer.
Because https://r-roms.github.io/
I am currently in Japan, so what's a good spot to find some cheap games? Im mainly just want a Jp PS2 and maybe anything else that's region free or easy to circumvent region lock.
Super Potato
thanks for the info. So far, I've bought a dremcast keyboard for 1600 yen and Sonic draft 2 for Gamegear for 200 yen at some game store in Akihabara and Resident Evil 1 and 2 for PS1 for 400 yen at a used record store in Shinbuya. I'm currently in Nagoya, so I'll see if I can find some treasures here.
Please stop. You're literally killing the Japanese game market. Literally everyone wants you to stop.
op, no one's going to buy your mountains of famicom shovelware.
anywhere notable enough for someone to recommend will have shit prices. get out of tokyo and explore. you'll see other cool stuff (non game related) that you wouldn't see otherwise as well.
Please have a nice day
fair
Is that copy pasta from like 2007 or so? If not i am LAUGHING at your expense now.
Get some pussy and you won't care anymore. Get your favorites and if you need over 15 games for any one platform you've got issues that a CIB library won't solve anyway.
I own a single Japanese game that I found at a thrift shop, it's not even a Japan exclusive and have no way of playing it since I only have NTSC-U consoles (though I'd rather emulate it anyway). That game is pic related
infinite supply of cheap classic games for a fraction of the prices that their US / EU versions go for
It's not infinite. They're gonna have to run out at some point.
They already are, that's why prices are going up in Japan.
Especially PC Engine
t. EOP
>含みを含んどる
The Japanese /vr/ collecting community is complete fricking garbage and I never want to interact with it or be around it. Ever.
because all the japanese copies have shot up in price already
just look at pc engine and saturn
I recently went to Japan and bought a N64 for 40000 yen. Those game bins with game cartridges for 300 yen each are cool, but I'd rather just buy a flash cart.
did you actually spend nearly 270 usd on an N64 or was that a typo
super potato is shit, don't bother
i think people filling duffel bags with overpriced games and clueless foreigners buying rpgs they can't read for 5x market price on ebay is a bigger issue than a tourist taking home a few souvenirs.
no one threw a hissy fit when i bought some atari games in america and i guarantee you theres less copies of dactar enduro than biohazard 2.
>did you actually spend nearly 270 usd on an N64 or was that a typo
Oh yeah, I meant 4000 yen. It gets confusing with all the zeros.
This is the place I got it from, BTW. It was fairly sparse on desirable items, but it had a little bit of stuff.
>a tourist taking home a few souvenirs
This is literally one of the top reasons that the government cited for why the national diet library started archiving retro games. It's a big problem and frick you for contributing to it. If you want a souvenir get a fricking maneki neko keychain or something.
>maneki neko keychain or something.
mostly got gundam kits. the gundam base exclusive kits are pretty cool. i mostly just pirate/emulate anyway.
can't seem to find the NDL thing you are talking about, i've heard that before but all i get from searches is general library info and an article that just redirects to someone's shitty blog. seems like something they should've been doing anyway.
btw are you the same guy as
?
>Save game history: Japan preserves its cartridge-bound treasures
>National Diet Library fights off legal barriers, corrosion, even DRAIN TO ABROAD (you)
https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Media-Entertainment/Save-game-history-Japan-preserves-its-cartridge-bound-treasures
There's a lot more info on this topic if you search in Japanese, especially if you crawl Japanese web boards and twitter threads where the discussion of the rising game prices is discussed.
oh so NOW japan cares about preservation
Japanese gamers have been preserving games, manuals and guides for years. The difference is that now the government is preserving them too.
>OH, SO NOW THEY’RE TRYING TO CONSERVE ELEPHANTS? ONLY NOW THAT THEY’RE UNDER THE THREAT OF EXTINCTION? HYPOCRITES!!! YOU NEVER CARED IN THE FIRST PLACE!
>the gundam base exclusive kits are pretty cool.
Man, I want most of those Gundam Base kits, and the P-Bandai stuff sold at the statues.
I broke my collarbone while visiting japan and I can never look at the country the same since.
I got bitten in the nuts by a deer in Nara. Still love Japan, I've gone back and enjoyed myself. Frick those deer though, they're c**ts.
Don't frick with deer. Beastiality may be legal in Japan but it's a sin and will take you to hell. It also exposes you to some serious diseases.
Why haven't you taken the emulation pill yet, shit for brains?
Frick off homosexuals, only I have the right to buy Japanese games. And I mean it unironically.
>only I
And me! Don't forget me. Right, buddy? Just the two of us, like the old days...
Come on guys, head to Japan like all your favourite retro youtubers!
I was trying to figure out what the hell is happening because suddenly they're literally all making videos about going to Japan to buy games. It turns out some new proxy site gave them all free vacations.
Yeah they will quietly say it at the end of the video "thanks for sendicko!" for sponsoring this trip
We've gotten to the point where, if you live in the US, probably the place that has the most copies for most popular video games circulating around, it's still cheaper to import from a market that has less copies and also has its own collectors' community... what happened?
infinite supply of cheap classic games for a fraction of the prices that their US / EU versions go for
are you moronic. their eroges still officially sell for full price! and no, i will not learn nippongoese with its 3 writing systems smashed into 1.
Because one thing I'm glad collectors did is ruin the market so much that I realized I don't actually want all this shit. I sold all my games and couldn't be happier.
