People who are still using Windows 7 for gaming after even Steam abandons official support are likely far too stubborn to learn a totally new operating system.
i did 4 years ago. tried a bunch of games since then and the only one that didn't work was that recent gundam one i wanted to try which is a shame, but everything else including my favorites and new releases works like a charm. i was really impressed by compatibility

no
Not an emulator and only two games out of 300 I tested had issues, but I am using old hardware so I can't use the newest versions of proton.
If you're lucky, it's as straightforward as it gets, proton is one-click-run for pretty much every vidya i tried in years, from indie to AAA and VR stuff. But yeah, ultimately linux distros are an entirely different operating system compared to windows and it requires you to learn many mechanisms you've never seen before, so in that way, it is complicated. The only way to not get mad at linux is knowing it well enough to know how it works and how to resolve issues.
You were literally told not to do it if you think it sounds hard. Additional crying was not necessary.

Parrot. moron.
steam decker here, unless the anti-cheat is specifically targeting linux, usually you can solve things by doing one of the following:
>download native version >pick one of the proton versions steam provides >download any of the versions provided by Proton GE >run the game windowed and try proton again >try a different renderer, like OpenGL if available, then try proton again >download a fan patch >download a source port (and use proton if the source port only supports windows) >use protontricks
but first of all, go to ProtonDB, because 9 times out of 10, some other moron already hit his head against the wall trying to make that game you want to play, work, and they posted the fix there
Off Steam? I've tried a few such as Deus Ex, Neptunia games, FTL, Into The Breach, Terraria. They work fine.
Problem I am having on Steam through on Linux(dunno if it is the distro or what) is after logging on to Steam, the window for Steam stays on a permanent loading screen and I am trying to figure out how to fix it. Happens after using Steam the 2nd time after being installed.
every time someone mentions installing linux there's lines of codes you need to write in order to just install something, even if it's just firefox, you need to write code for it
with windows, you just press install and it installs, there's no need write code like with linux
>in order to just install something, even if it's just firefox, you need to write code for it
Typing a command isn't the same as writing code.
Also, you don't even need to do that.
Stay on Windows though.

Instead of trying to delude Ganker anons into your Linux cult, you should be pointing them to the Friendly Windows Thread on Ganker so they can play the most games possible with the least amount of BS to deal with. Valve is the only thing propping up Linux for gaming and even with all their efforts, it still sucks ass when you try to actually play most games to completion. Or have to deal with the crappy transition from X11 to Wayland. Or if you have friends and want to stream gameplay to them through discord and the hacky alternative client breaks. Or the fact there still isn't a Linux-native music player that approaches the completeness of Foobar2000. And on and on it goes.
Frick off you windows troony, your slow bloated, ads ridden OS is cancer. Who the frick cares about foobar2000 when your entire system is significantly slower in every regard.
Discord is a shit program, I can stream but it's bugged, exactly the same ways discord was bugged when I was using it in windows. Absolute electron garbage. It's aids on android too truly needs to get it's head bashed in by matrix.

Then why haven't I seen it? Funny that this "automatic" thing doesn't show up here.
OK I never used Wine before and I have Wine Config, Wine Desktop, and Winetricks installed and I was wondering how to install(including GOG installers) and run games on Wine? I tried to install a game through Wine Desktop(a GOG game) and installed fine but when I start it up, game has audio, but NO video.
just use a launcher like heroic games. Or type github umu launcher and see the docs in it and go through it
Plain wine will be okayish for very old games but not modern ones. You need dxvk and VKD3D which need additional configuring. Using umu you can use proton which has all of these

>The answer is that it doesn't happen because I don't play le competitive shooters for zoomers and gachashit.
This always said by linux fanatics, but not every single singleplayer game works either.
hell a lot of the games have a gold rating on ProtonDB but when you check out the reviews they say stuff like:
>Works perfect.... but you have to watch all the cutscenes on youtube and ocasionally the audio crackles and stops playing!
Let me rephrase: I haven't run into a compatibility issue where a game doesn't actually run in at least 8 years. Trivial things like needing to put dxvk into a prefix or read the logs and install something specific like a VC++ runtime, yes, but I'm not a fricking moron. I also submit patches upstream when necessary.
The majority games work flawlessly you homosexual, if they don't because they are older you might have to dick around with proton version or look into protondb pages. It's exactly the same thing when old windows games don't work on windows and you go to pcgamingwiki. Except somehow linux is actually more compatible with that shit.
linux is the worst os i've ever used. worse than mac even. it barely has any software that works, none of which is compatible with actual software used by real companies for work. installing even t he smallest app will have you searching on forums, installing extra bloated packages. you'll be lucky to get 3 weeks out of it before the os implodes itself during one of its 900,000/ package updates. games don't work on it either.
its one giant hunk of shit used by trannies who seem hell bent to groom others into being as miserable as they are. op is a homosexual
im worried about how well i could run a myriad of games i pirate/own from throughout the years and how easy they would be to get working compared to winblows. i just want to click the exe and play it.

>Silver
In theory, it means a game doesn't work quite right. In practice, it often means a game used to be broken and works now, e.g. >https://www.protondb.com/app/595100
or that it has gone through multiple periods of being broken, not because Proton spontaneously forgets how to run the game itself but rather because companies like Rockstar, Ubisoft, and 2K keep breaking shit by updating their janky DRM launchers.
Have at least a few of those. Never had any problems with them.
Let me guess? Nvidia GPU?
Nobody is lying to you. They just have supported hardware.
They're also probably smart enough to install GE which includes the Microsoft patented codecs they use to enforce their illegal monopoly these days.
>>LA Noire fricked
I was just playing this a few days ago, though. The Steam version literally does just work with Proton 8.0 on my Linux Mint machine. I don't care what ProtonDB says and I won't even look. It works for me and anyone else's problem is not my problem. It also runs on my Steam Deck but I had to go into desktop mode to get past some first-time setup (language selection if I remember correctly) for Rockstar's fricking awful launcher.
Paradise
The original version of this game also works on my Mint PC and my Steam Deck. I don't know about the remaster because I don't buy mediocre games twice.
>Catherine fricked
Catherine works now, it has been fixed recently. >Killer is Dead
Works too, just needs a little tinkering.
Remember that many games have a low ProtonDB score because they didn't worked for years and many fixes/workarounds made them playable only recently.
It'll ensure that only autistic people, shitposters and normalgays post. It's going to chase oldgays out.
As long as they keep it to Ganker, I don't care, but the second they apply it to the rest of this site it's fricking over. I hope people have prepared a distributed replacement on a p2p protocol by then and taught anons how to use it.
>games run beautifully in Wine >music production software doesn't run at all >ones that have native Linux ports don't support VST >only other option to avoid Windows is to buy... (barfs) an Apple computer

Protip: You don't need to see 100% of every window you have open at all times, especially on small (under 32") screens.
>wasting
If you aren't using 100% of your RAM 100% of the time you are wasting RAM.
If you have unused RAM you are needlessly slowing down your computer for no reason other than to virtue signal about having lower numbers.
Then again I don't think you'd know how to disable kernel caching, so you probably are using your RAM 100% of the time.
Oh boy, this fricking argument again.
Listen here you Black person: There are three types of memory on Linux. Locked memory, working memory and cache.
Locked memory is bad bad bad because it can't be evicted to swap. Almost all freedesktop crap adds a bunch of this shit because lul communication FIFOs.
Working memory is less bad since it can be evicted to swap, but it's still memory that's unusable for other shit and swapping is undesirable.
Cache is what you want since it means you don't hit the disk constantly, which is slow.
In conclusion, frick off.

You can't even use a proper web browser or Steam without having policy kit installed. Avoiding Plasma won't fix that. You would have to be a mega autist to actually avoid freedesktop. >portals
So you literally never use a file picker when you post images on Ganker? Bullshit.
Post packages.
You never want to use 100% ram. You always want to have some extra unused as leeway. In case of spikes or some shit.
It takes essentially no time to clear RAM for other uses. It takes 100x longer to load shit from even the fastest SSDs than it does to already have data loaded and delete it when you need that RAM for something else.
In fact loading from SSDs is so slow that it's actually faster to compress unused data in RAM rather than reload it from outside of RAM.
Anonymous
Yes, you can. Policykit is entirely unecessary. You're thinking of dbus, and in fact Firefox and anything chromium-based works without it.
The "problem" with steam and no dbus is that it doesn't save your password no matter what but everything else works.
Also, portals are an entirely unnecessary. These things called "GUI toolkits" exist and already have a defined fricking way to open a file picker, moron.

Yeah and then when you run a pirated game that has escalated privileges it'll have no problem doing tons of damage because you have to run everything as root for it to work properly without polkit.
So you CAN do it, but that doesn't mean you SHOULD do it. >Also, portals are an entirely unnecessary. These things called "GUI toolkits" exist and already have a defined fricking way to open a file picker, moron.

And lol, running games as root and not under a separate account with zero unnecessary privileges? Are you a fricking imbecile? Nobody fricking does that.
It's more trying to handle some projects on github that occasionally want you to build .sln instead, but I guess the shorter solution would just to use wine on released binaries instead. Personally, I don't like to use vstudio.
‘msbuild myProject.sln’ assuming you have dotnet installed obviously
Neat. Does it Just Work(TM) for the current platform like cmake && make does?
I should note that's not a facetious Just Work. I've never had issues with cmake && make outside of when it needs a certain prefix or whatever the frick and I was too quickly skimming to notice or care at first.
I've dabbled with dualbooting and I'm gonna make the full plunge when I build a new pc sometime soon, I just have a lot of shit I don't feel like redownloading.
I really want to move to linux for gaming but while the games themselves run fine, tools like cheat engine, autohotkey and mod organizer have issue on it
You can do autohotkey like things with xdotool for X and much more limited ydotool for Wayland
Have you tried PINCE? Also cheat engine can hook up to wine but I don't know how well that works.
I switched years ago. For the most part things "just work" on linux nearly as often as windows and linux is much much less of a hassle to customize than windows. I have had more small nuisance bugs on linux but more critical failures on windows. You are still going to need to keep a windows boo or vm around for some things though.
I've done 100% of my gaming on Linux (steam deck) the last 2 months or so because my main PC is fully occupied upscaling ~30 TB of porn.
It's worked reasonably well but I frequently run into weird edge cases. Example:
- rimworld, scroll the research menu all the way to the right and it'll lock up. Click the scroll bar to move it instantly to the end instead and it's fine. Also I can only map scroll by holding middle click about 50% of the time so I've gotten used to using wasd to move the map.
- starsector, the game fricks up and gets confused when you hold shift while selecting a weapon group. It also seems to memory leak a lot faster than I remember in Windows, even if I increase the heap size.
- if I try to reboot back to gaming mode from the desktop, about 50% of the time it'll just go to a black screen and I have to hold down the power button to get it to ever turn on again.
- emudeck fricking up everyone's game library because it's free software so they have an automatic license to waste hours of every user's time by never testing shit, just hitting publish and waiting for the bug reports to flow in.
Overall it's not terrible, it's a better experience than my WiiU was. It's better than Windows 95 or ME. But it's got years ahead of it before I can recommend it to anyone.
I never had these issues with RW or SS. RW runs on Unity so it should be good even if you pirated windows version, SS is fricking Java so it's guaranteed to run the same between different OS.
I like how i can play New Vegas and Fallout 3 on Linux without having to mod anything. But just work out of the box and i can even alt-tab - Something i could never do on my old Windows system.
>windows 7

at work I was given a spare laptop which had windows 7 on it and i couldn't even use firefox or chrome on it lol.

If you want to play those games, then stay on Windows.
Again, no need to reply again with even more crying. I already gave you the answer you want: ooga booga Windows good.
Lutris, Bottles, Heroic, and probably a dozen other launchers all doing mostly the same shit.
Or just run Wine from the command line.
Or just stay on Windows because no one cares if you do.
>emulator
?
>Reimplement CPU instructions on different CPU instruction set: I sleep
>Reimplement operating system instructions on different operating system: IT'S NOT AN EMULATOR!!! IT'S IN THE NAME!!!!!!!!
Parrot. moron.
translating abstractions for the same instructions isn't emulating, yes
>operating system instructions
You can just say "I concede", it's easier.
I'll go write some new instructions to your mom, to emulate your dad so to speak. You can call me "papa".
An emulator translates foreign code at the machine level.
A compatibility layer translates foreign code at the API level without touching the code.
What do you think an ISA is?
sometimes you have to put in a little more effort but usually it's enough to just check a box in steam
steam decker here, unless the anti-cheat is specifically targeting linux, usually you can solve things by doing one of the following:
>download native version
>pick one of the proton versions steam provides
>download any of the versions provided by Proton GE
>run the game windowed and try proton again
>try a different renderer, like OpenGL if available, then try proton again
>download a fan patch
>download a source port (and use proton if the source port only supports windows)
>use protontricks
but first of all, go to ProtonDB, because 9 times out of 10, some other moron already hit his head against the wall trying to make that game you want to play, work, and they posted the fix there
Disingenuous and baiting question so I can proceed to shit on Linux?
Already have.
what games are your favorite on that orange pi?
Happens after using Steam the 2nd time after being installed.
>troony
>/u/garbage
But of course
https://github.com/Open-Wine-Components/umu-launcher
this is what you will use in the future for non steam proton
Is there any point in using this directly? Seems like it's made to be a backend tool integrated into launchers like Lutris.
yes that is correct
if you use wine directry then this is just way easier with added benefits
I already did.

every time someone mentions installing linux there's lines of codes you need to write in order to just install something, even if it's just firefox, you need to write code for it
with windows, you just press install and it installs, there's no need write code like with linux
please stop spreading false information
>in order to just install something, even if it's just firefox, you need to write code for it
Typing a command isn't the same as writing code.
Also, you don't even need to do that.
Stay on Windows though.
Thanks, but I rather write lines of code.

It would take a pretty shitty machine to notice a difference between Windows and linux speed.
You wouldn't notice anything because you don't do anything. Your opinion doesn't matter.
I don't notice because I'm not on a potato that has to resort to the CPU drawing screen animations due to my GPU being old enough to vote.
You don't notice because you obviously don't play videos games or do anything intensive on your computer.

Using umu you can use proton which has all of these
Most likely you are better off just using heroic.
Until there's a distro that can permanently disable needing to type in a password even in the command prompt I'm not interested

Because I upgraded from Windows XP to Linux more than fifteen years ago.
What do you do when you can't play a specific game on Linux?
The answer is that it doesn't happen because I don't play le competitive shooters for zoomers and gachashit.
Thanks for avoiding the question. Frick Linux.
>The answer is that it doesn't happen because I don't play le competitive shooters for zoomers and gachashit.
This always said by linux fanatics, but not every single singleplayer game works either.
hell a lot of the games have a gold rating on ProtonDB but when you check out the reviews they say stuff like:
>Works perfect.... but you have to watch all the cutscenes on youtube and ocasionally the audio crackles and stops playing!
they are disingenous af
Frick around until it does. I've yet to find something that outright doesn't work.

Silver works. If it's listed as broken then your fricked.
>Silver
In theory, it means a game doesn't work quite right. In practice, it often means a game used to be broken and works now, e.g.
or that it has gone through multiple periods of being broken, not because Proton spontaneously forgets how to run the game itself but rather because companies like Rockstar, Ubisoft, and 2K keep breaking shit by updating their janky DRM launchers.
Have at least a few of those. Never had any problems with them.
Let me guess? Nvidia GPU?
Nobody is lying to you. They just have supported hardware.
They're also probably smart enough to install GE which includes the Microsoft patented codecs they use to enforce their illegal monopoly these days.

I expect email verification to only improve the post quality.
why don't you just go to reddit then if you think that's the case?
Reddit has other problems like groupthink and the downvote system that enforces it.

Holy shit man. Also I never knew Ubuntu has a Bullseye variant. I know Debian has Bullseye.
Plasma 6 and it's consequences have been a disaster for the year of the Linux desktop.
>using a desktop environment
shiggy diggy
It's not 2010 anymore. Plasma is simply better than anything you can roll on your own unless you're one of those homosexuals who thinks they "need" tiling WMs.
Protip: You don't need to see 100% of every window you have open at all times, especially on small (under 32") screens.
Protip: frick you, I'm not wasting 3GB of RAM on policykit, portals and associated freedesktop cancer.
And you'll get stuck with a shitty Qt picker that can't even show thumbnails. have a nice day troony homosexual.
That's what selinux and user namespaces are for, moron. I'd sooner put a bullet through my head than allow flatpak shit near my machine.
>selinux
Post kernel config, homosexual.
Unfortunately, my kernel config would mean nothing since selinux is configured through policy files loaded on boot. A shame, really, you're not even asking for the right goddamn thing.
>using kernel modules for selinux
>using kernel modules
Bloat
>Post kernel config
And lol, running games as root and not under a separate account with zero unnecessary privileges? Are you a fricking imbecile? Nobody fricking does that.
You never want to use 100% ram. You always want to have some extra unused as leeway. In case of spikes or some shit.
You often need that shit anyway to make things work on a wm
Why?
I did that like 15 years ago.
>Q6600
Hello, my pre-prison CPU.
I'm tired of compiling from source, boss. I don't know how to compile .sln on Linux, boss.
>I don't know how to compile .sln on Linux, boss.
vscode i guess but yeah i wouldn't use linux if you really need vs
It's more trying to handle some projects on github that occasionally want you to build .sln instead, but I guess the shorter solution would just to use wine on released binaries instead. Personally, I don't like to use vstudio.
Neat. Does it Just Work(TM) for the current platform like cmake && make does?
I should note that's not a facetious Just Work. I've never had issues with cmake && make outside of when it needs a certain prefix or whatever the frick and I was too quickly skimming to notice or care at first.
‘msbuild myProject.sln’ assuming you have dotnet installed obviously
I've dabbled with dualbooting and I'm gonna make the full plunge when I build a new pc sometime soon, I just have a lot of shit I don't feel like redownloading.
I really want to move to linux for gaming but while the games themselves run fine, tools like cheat engine, autohotkey and mod organizer have issue on it
You can do autohotkey like things with xdotool for X and much more limited ydotool for Wayland
Have you tried PINCE? Also cheat engine can hook up to wine but I don't know how well that works.
ydotool is awful
I switched years ago. For the most part things "just work" on linux nearly as often as windows and linux is much much less of a hassle to customize than windows. I have had more small nuisance bugs on linux but more critical failures on windows. You are still going to need to keep a windows boo or vm around for some things though.
I already did. I'm using Linux right now. 🙂
Because linux is for trannies.
Games and software not supported, or run poorly on Linux.

So you use Linux but you want to use a Mac instead? Then use a Mac.
Didn't know you needed this much help.
I don't want to use Windows but I have to in order to play video games.
And how do we get to the point where you're so mad about Linux that you click on every single Linux-related thread just to seethe in it?
>Muh spyware
Lmao you think your privacy safe just because you use redditux
RW runs on Unity so it should be good even if you pirated windows version, SS is fricking Java so it's guaranteed to run the same between different OS.
t
I like how i can play New Vegas and Fallout 3 on Linux without having to mod anything. But just work out of the box and i can even alt-tab - Something i could never do on my old Windows system.

Yeah but Ganker can't actually explain how the mirror 'knows' there's something there.
I did 12 years ago. I love old games (late 90s early 2000s) and Linux with wine is pretty much the only way you can play them now.
>windows 7
do homosexuals still use that shit? The os is unsupported by various softwares and even browsers these days.
at work I was given a spare laptop which had windows 7 on it and i couldn't even use firefox or chrome on it lol.
That`s what I did a year ago. Best tech related decision of my life. I still can`t play R6 Siege because israeliteisoft hates us.
made the jump to arch a month ago. It runs, but not well. Even outside of gaming i've noticed slow downs and issues, but i'm trying to tough it out rather than deal with the impending W11 "upgrade"
