ZoE 2 is not the undefeated champion of mech games, but it’s probably still the best of pure action/anime mech games.
The whole franchise as a whole is terribly underappreciated. Even the anime is kino.

Konami gave him a blank check to make MGSV. He spent most of that time traveling the globe, taking selfish with celebrities, snorting coke off the butt of Quiet, and licensing shitty songs.

The first game was sort of meh, the sequel is where it's at. If you get impatient, there are short summary videos online. (the PS2 version of 2 even had a "previous story" short video selectable from the title screen) 2 fixes every problem with the original. More variety of locations and enemy types, graphics style, and instead of per-weapon limited ammo for subweapons, you have a meter that you spend to use them, and build it up by fighting normally. There are also at least twice as many types of subweapons to play around with, including a late-game ability to PSST NOTHIN PERSONNEL KID teleport. It's basically all you could want in a sequel.

You won't understand this game at all if you haven't played through xenosaga. it's a loose crossover series.

I have played Xenogears a long time ago but haven't touched Xenosaga. I own 3 but haven't started it yet.
you're gonna want to brush up on xenogears again and then go through each xenosaga game to even have a chance at understanding the intent of the game. you can skip the first zoe though.

Kojima ripping off and continuing the plot of Xenosaga unsanctioned is well documented and it's one of the reasons people hate this game. He did it with escape from new york, and he did it again here

I really dunno if I'd call ZoE2 a mech game, it's more a stylish action game with a 90s mech anime theme. It's still goddamn good though, I've never seen any other game handle fighting and flying in 3D as good as it did.
I haven't played the PC Mechwarrior games, but I did like Battletech on the Genesis. Then there is Target Earth, but I haven't invested much time into it and it seems pretty hard.
