You break down bullets you have to turn into better bullets you mong. You're not meant to scrounge lead and casings from vendors like some kind of bottom feeder.
Its not worth the stat investment which is my problem with it.

If this was fallout 3 we were talking about I'd agree but it's not, durability isn't so punishing like it used to be, if you don't care about the skill checks then it's not that great & even with magazines can cover many of them. To be more accurate I think the ammo crafting is undercooked & primers are too costly / rare which really kneecaps it. It's a minor feature that isn't worth investing in alone & your green text implicitly demonstrates that.

The real problem is that you can only make/break down up to 100 bullets at a time.
You can't do it in the sort of bulk quantities you would want for ammunition crafting, especially if the ammo you're making is going to completely replace the default.
That's why you mod it along with the rest of the broken UI

You don't really need to bother. I spent point in repair, just to get Jury Rigging. My apt in Novac was overflowing in all the weapons I never used.
I was swimming in so much recovered loot, that I never needed to make ammo. All the storage chests held different weapon types, ammo, armor, crafting materials, etc
I started throwing all my money into the bathtub, and the DM gold bars into the bathroom garbage can.
New Vegas is really generous.

Same, Fallout really brings out a scavenger in me.
Morrowind is worse since the chests and containers have a weight limit AND there are so many artifacts and unique items, weapons, and armor.

They are useful if you aren't raising Sneak and want to completely avoid confrontation.
For me its Implant GRX +2. Regenerative slow-motion at your fingertips.
You also don't need to have ammo if you do a Companion Build, since they don't waste Ammo, so you can just put a single bullet in their inventory, alongside the weapon you want them to use, and they will never ran out.

Energy weapons cheapen Hardcore mode imo.
yeah, the ammo is heavier than bullets but you only need two ammo types for any energy weapon. for guns you will most likely have multiple guns with many different kinds of ammo, like a rifle, a shotgun, a pistol/magnum, and maybe a fully automatic.

The only reason I'd get so many different weapons is for roleplay purposes.
You can do anything with 1-2 weapons.
You'd be a fool to not have a shotgun on hand with the perk that allows them go knock enemies down to the ground for Deathclaws.
Carrying around a whole other gun and wasting a perk point so you can get within melee distance? They also fall down if you just shoot them with a better gun you dumbshit!
Cazadores and Deathclaws are pretty fast and attack in groups/duo.
Unless you shoot their wings/legs in VATS to slow them down.
