I understand fifa because people love the actual sport so much but call of duty baffles me, a game every year and the mainstream audience just never gets bored
Because it's an entry level shooter. People like shooters. Every year, there are a shit ton of kids discovering them for the first time. CoD isn't meant for an older audience, it exists to hook youngsters for a few years and then move onto the next generation.
It's the only popular shooter that isn't tryhard e-sports shit. It can totally be that, but it usually isn't. Just casual gunplay with a lot of shit talking included, pretty fun.
One of the least complex and most populated shooter franchise, so simple to pick up and play but not worth paying for a yearly installment unless that's all you play.
The games are pretty straightforward, the formula doesn't change that much and when it does it can be beneficial or not too bad for the most part, so when you'e buying a CoD game you know what you're expecting. Halo and Battlefield have tried to change the formula but in drastic measures which didn't end well for either franchises.
This is purely from a multiplayer perspective of course.
On the other hand change can be good in the campaigns, Zombies and Spec Ops are entirely different subjects though.
Because it was fun up until the new one. MW2019, Cold War, hell even Vanguard are all great multiplayer experiences. But the new Modern Warfare II is complete garbage and made me lose almost all hope in the franchise. The only thing that would get me to buy MWIII is if they make it like MW2019, you know like not absolute fricking shit.
People will continue to buy these games whether or not they are good. People don’t learn. They’d rather remain moronic for the rest of their lives.
Then: >"It's just generic brown military shooters with scripted events and hallway maps"
Now: >"Ah yes, Modern Warfare. Now THAT'S a masterpiece with a brilliant campaign!"
All of the popular goyslop.
Most gamers are nostalgia clowns and will develop tender feelings towards shitty games because it was "from le simpler times"
The Xbox kids grew up. Same thing with Halo nostalgia.

>Seething contrarians assmad that people like a game they don't like
>Why is call of duty so overwhelmingly successful?
Same reason Ace Combat was fun. Is it a realistic simulation of being a fighter pilot? No. But it makes you feel like how you thought being a fighter pilot was when you were a kid. CoD does that but for infantry. When a nine year old imagines joining the army this is what they imagine it's like.
It's exceptionally easy to get into. Campaigns (when present) are short but satisfying shooting galleries that scratch the monkey part of your brain. Multiplayer is very simple plug and play deathmatch with things constantly unlocking to keep players engaged.
It's a winning formula, really. It would be a bigger question if it ever somehow failed.
it's the normalgay feedback loop, just like Pokemon and Fifa
once it got lucky with success, people just buy for the name, and the more people buy, the more popular it gets, the more people buy, etc.
At this point it’s just an easy way for friends to stay in touch, especially for people that work, don’t have to constantly get good at new games since it’s just the same game over and over.
goyim love their slop
it's the FIFA of military games

They have a large target audience that keeps getting refreshed with new recruits.
The actual games
Then:

What happened?
A classic is just what people liked as kids
What hated game now will people praise in 10-15 years?

Fortnite
It's already happening. People are nostalgic over the first few seasons.
The Xbox kids grew up. Same thing with Halo nostalgia.
None of my friends play the old halo games even though they’re available in the Master Chief Collection. They only play the newest shitty halo game.
>Seething contrarians assmad that people like a game they don't like

Literally sponsored by the US military.

Any hope for the 'open world' zombie mode?

It's fun, the gunplay is tight and satisfying.

COD4, which released while Battlefield was focused on PC, and Medal of Honor was at a nadir earned them 15 years of good will.
