bought it as a teenager
could identify with squall a lot
also the fact that they looked like actual humans
and the story was more grounded made it feel cool
I played it as a kid, after i had played (but not beaten) ff7 and a few other JRPG's of the era - BOF3, Grandia, Legend of Legaia/Dragoon, etc. And it just wasn't that interesting or fun compared to any of the others. It just didn't grab my attention, although I do remember thinking Rinoa was hot
People didn't like the junction system. A combination of people who play it today and complain how easy it is to break (after reading how to online) and also the rather major fact that the story completely shits the bed after disc 1. Best soundtrack in the series.
except 8 has memorable music.
XV doesn't even have that
spoony ruined the internet discussion around the game because everybody is a retarded parrot.
game was really well received when it came out.
>spoony
I hate that guy because any legitimate criticism against 8 gets ignored by people saying "stop parroting that idiot" just because one of the criticisms is something close to what he said
People got annoyed by the Draw system and because the protagonist had no interest in anyone. It's only by the end of the game does he actually fall for someone and have a purpose but that was too hard of a thing for most people to get to.

I've read recently that Squall's apathy/lack of interest was a result of bad translations. Half the time he says "whatever" in english, he had a bunch of real lines - or so i've heard.
It's true, but there's a lot more character development with Squall than people realise, even in English. Some things are also only seen if he's with specific party members at certain times.
>I've read recently that Squall's apathy/lack of interest was a result of bad translations.
that's just cope by fanboys

and it's usually the really annoying party members people hate, like Rinoa
How come nobody's made a mod to try and fix the localisation for these games? There's also that nividia leak saying 9 is allegedly getting a remake as well.
Every time someone decided to fix 7's translation it's always someone with a gigantic ego who draws out the process hoping to for the desperate to drip-feed praise constantly. Also nonsense like adding their own OCs.
if you announce it in advance there's always localization trannies and people that don't want to accept that a game from their childhood had a bad translation flaming you. Wild Arms also has absolutely terrible translations and I think somebody was going to do retranslations starting with 1, but then he just got bullied into quitting.

The best ones are the guys who show up unannounced with a finished translation. Like that guy who did some of the older Ys games and then ended up getting paid because they used his translation as a base.
>9 remake
That would be weird, especially since I can imagine them going away from the more cartoonish graphics. Seeing Quina in a more realistic graphic style would be bizarre.
Not really. You can choose who you speak to and interact with. The love that happens is subtle. Cutscenes tell more without actually saying anything. Look how Rinoa squints her eyes at him and Squall opens his eyes. The cutscene in space is the moment where he finally admits his emotion.
Squall is not opening up to anyone except as the story progresses. It's few lines here and there and eventually forming a connection. You have to choose who you talk to and take with. If it's her it becomes obvious.
However I'm looking at FF8 with rose colored love goggles. I was like 14 at the time. In school. Love was at the centerfold of my thoughts and this game pushed all of my buttons properly. I even made a school assignment of the game that teachers and students praised.
The whole theme of the game is love. Something FF7 didn't do and FF9 ignored mostly. They've all had female protagonists but the hero never actually falls for them or they are shown being together at all. FF8 is the exception and I can't think of any games since that did this.
got on Squall's (and by extension, the Player's) nerves, A LOT.
Nearly fucked up the assassination mission (Irvine ended up fucking it up anyway because he had one job and blew it)
2nd worst love interest of the series

when Rinoa's main defining trait is just to get on Squall's nerves all the time, of course I am going to hate her

NTA but she only does it because she's interested in him and does it in a playful way.

At least you know she's not the actual worst, which is Garnet.

>Lunafreya is actually attractive
hard to tell because of how little screentime she has
>This timing
Wtf, I'm on my first playthrough and took a break when I got done breaking the seals in the last castle area.
I love Squall and his romance with Rinoa, Laguna is great but beyond that I can't get into the story.
The micromanagement with junctions can be fun but it also gets under my skin when I get wary off using strong spells that I equipped.
>FF8 is My Hero Academia in FF setting >Except My Hero Academia is better >Terrible characters across the board >FF8 fans have to cope by pretending to be superior >'I even made a school assignment of the game that teachers and students praised.' >IX always gets brought up for some reason because VIII fans are insecure about Zidane/Vivi/Steiner eclipsing the entire VIII cast
Weird fanbase. I like VIII though. I've liked all thr mainline games. VIII and XIV cultists are the two biggest cocksuckers of the franchise.
I loved playing FF8, but Cerberus was where I really felt the weight of the enemy scaling and draw / summon spam, and had to call it quits there. FF8 has my favorite fight music in the series, though, and Squall with his gunblade is PEAK design.
8 is the best ff game and one of my all time favorites. society couldn't handle the kino
this
bought it as a teenager
could identify with squall a lot

The reality of IQ distributions.
Pretty much this. The low-IQ can't understand the game's characters or systems. FF8 is literally the ultimate filter.
>draw
>spamming renzokuken on low health
Riveting gameplay.
>Underrated
>90 Metacritic
LOOOOL

>characters look a bit weird at a distance because of the playstation's low res and shaky Z mapping
What a shitty meme that was.
Because it's a teenage drama.
People didn't like the junction system. A combination of people who play it today and complain how easy it is to break (after reading how to online) and also the rather major fact that the story completely shits the bed after disc 1. Best soundtrack in the series.
The game just sucks, it's pretty much the XV for the PS1 era.
except 8 has memorable music.
XV doesn't even have that
>spoony

9 is the worst game of the ps1 era you stupid fucking moron
Terrible story and the worst magic system in the series.
You didn't even read my post you gay. I defended 8 more than I legitimately criticised it. 9 is the worst PS1 FF.
spoony ruined the internet discussion around the game because everybody is a retarded parrot.

with what feels like zero development

correct. I played other language versions first and the whatever meme never happened in it.

7-9 got terrible translations so wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.
jesus christ. as if it wasn't already strong enough, my loathing for translators/localizers grows with each day

FF7 was retranslated at least.
>9 remake

At least that one carries most of the same intent through it. I've seen other comparisons for other parts of 9 where it's a complete rewrite.
Not him but which parts of 9 are basically rewrites?
Not really. You can choose who you speak to and interact with. The love that happens is subtle. Cutscenes tell more without actually saying anything. Look how Rinoa squints her eyes at him and Squall opens his eyes. The cutscene in space is the moment where he finally admits his emotion.

I'm a sucker for romance.
VIII is the artist's Final Fantasy. Take this (You) my kindred spirit.
>You can choose who you speak to and interact with.
and I chose to not interact with Rinoa because she was so damn annoying. So annoying to the point I sent her to the missile base
I remember much of the details but I know I'm going to regret asking you this:
Why is she annoying?
>Why is she annoying?

I’d rather say that it is massively overrated
>Nobody mentions 9
>8fags response to criticism is "B-BUT 9 THOUGH!"
How does 9 mindbreak 8fags so much?
because they can't say anything about 7, so they take out their angst on 9.
Because it was a card game with an RPG tacked on.
The battle mechanics are the only thing that bring the game down
ive not played it but force your way is very good.
Because most people are gay and only like gay shit. They hate things that represent masculinity like FF8
How come there's no Moguri mod equivalent for 7 and 8?
Moguri mod doesn't fix 9's biggest issue, the combat taking so fucking long.
I genuinely think FF8-enjoyers are just superior people.
Ugly women and gays really enjoy this entry, it's more overrated than the other way around, also, somebody have to say it, triple triad is shit

Ganker pretending to like 8 is the ultimate proof this board just loves being contrarian.
Junk system. literal junk
bad localization

what is this revisionist history? ff8 was stupid popular on release and got good reviews
8fags want to feel special.
Why is ATB so shit?
What is the best current version of FF8 to play
Emulated, the remasters ruin the visuals.
