they functionally are separate entities. threads for the same games exist simultaneously on both and have completely different communities, aside from /vg/ colonies.

There is a colossal amount of crossover between the userbases The main difference between the communities is the amount of 13-year-olds who've managed to gaslight themselves against using any other board, and rabidly defend "their" board, is extremely high on Ganker
generals are usually extremely insular and have their own community separate from mainstream discussion that happens on Ganker which leads to recognizable poster attention whoring and drama. this is why most people on Ganker consider being deported to /vg/ a death sentence for threads.
Given the SCP game got shuttled off and it didn't even have a high enough poster concentration to sustain a general, I'd sooner think the reason it's typically a death-knell is that I_AM_ABIB hits things he doesn't like with the general stick, regardless of whether or not it's active enough or even has that sub-community beyond normal server drama. I haven't seen him do it in quite some time, but we also haven't had a FOMO game that's earned his ire in quite some time, and in general I haven't seen his typical sweeps of moderation (I pay little or no attention to the IRC given it's a circlejerk for the few remaining staff members so I have no thumb on his pulse).

I lurk the scene and have gotten the idea part of the reason is that the base models are quite shite so ripping them out and throwing into blender is more of a pain than just taking G-pose lewds.
also the G-pose lewds are something almost anyone can do so it is the dominant method of making the porn.
Yeah the biggest reason is that the models themselves are unkind to being ripped, rigged and animated elsewhere. Genuinely less frustrating to just commission an artist to draw the character you want (most often your own character) or to do the porn in the game itself.

Personally I think the biggest problem is the fact that most of that shit looks way too much out of character for the characters they use. FFXIV is a singleplayer MMO with focus on story and you can see that the people who make porn have no clue who the characters actually are.
