because 1.0 had 1/3rd of the content that XI did when XI launched. gathering was good, crafting was good, gameplay was okay except for the absence of real skillchains but ultimately there was just literally nothing to do but hunt NMs. Even vanilla ass vanilla xi had garrison and shadowlord on top of an actual complete initial quest line

Even two week ago, I’d say that classic hc was only 30-40% bigger than ff. But it’s a bit hard to tell because wow servers are quite a bit larger than xiv’s.

The setting is done at this point. Everything is wrapped up, every conflict is resolved, every mystery has been answered. They're basically just giving the team a blank slate. Everything from this point on is XIV-2.

That being said it's not at all an uncommon opinion that 1.X was garbage through and through, whether from unplayed secondaries or not, since there's more than enough gameplay footage floating around to get a broad idea of what it was like. It's especially weird when that's being used as a foothold to discuss other radical gameplay shifts for FFXIV because de-facto you're picking an example everybody hated in 1.X.

The problem was they were never refined or even brought over to 2.0, so they're left to rot. ARR cross class just wasn't as satisfying when normal battles aren't something you even have to think about so the usage of said cross class system is relegated solely to boss encounters, which in 2.0s WoW style, the only thing that really ended up mattering is dps. There's no real levelling process in ARR since fates were just zergs, leves were gutted, and dungeons gave the best xp so any cross class option that wasn't either "reduce damage taken" or "increase damage dealt" is ultimately useless and could've been refined into a interesting futureproofed system.

I think their philosophy is less about unsubbing directly because of complexity and more causing "friction" like back in HW in casual content because the gap in your average playing and playing correctly grows to large.
People mass dropping in things like Steps of Faith or Nidhogg story mode because of the relatively high chance of failure back then are likely also why all story mode content is even more braindead than before.
This "argument" has always been moronic in any multiplayer setting, because the reason you will be kicked isn't because of blind metagays, but because killing a boss with 37,000,000+ HP while you're doing attacks with a peak DPS range hovering around 80K where a single fricked up mechanic can reset the entire encounter means that failure punishes every single person present, and insufficient and inferior DPS in these cases will provide dramatically more opportunities to slip on mechanics. Making a character who is explicitly and mechanically provable to be inferior to another just because you prefer a different color to your fireball than the other one is completely fine in a singleplayer game where the consequences of your meme build only affect you, but when there are 7-23 others who will all feel the impact of your decisions, it's something all of them will opt to not deal with going forward.

Both of those are irrelevant complaints about aesthetic choices. Adding an entire layer of elemental resistances and weaknesses to raids would invalidate this anyways. Making some kind of Firaga mage who gets bonuses to Fire damage and Fire procs and Flame Damage boosts would immediately need to be cycled out the second you encounter Ifrit, and considering how almost every single boss in the game is represented by one of a number of elements, you'll routinely find yourself incapable of doing anything without either leaving or changing to the "job" needed here. >Heal Paladin >Mit Warrior
So why would one be better than the other?
Literally the only case you're making that has a legitimate use case would be DoT Ninjas, but the sweeping anti-DoT patches make it clear they don't want us to focus on DoT uptime and instead lean around the burst window. One could argue that's bad for class identity, but everything else you're suggesting is either completely irrelevant nonsense or just "Why can't my BRD also use Inner Release and Doton????".

in xiv where you can play 19 different jobs on one character its a bit of a moot point
Having talent trees would be fricking awful in XIV. They work in games like WoW specifically because they're built around you having only one class, so it's a means to give you variety. You can be a paladin to heal, hurt, or tank but you can only be a paladin. The game is built around this, which is why you cannot change classes freely.
The issue with XIV is that it isn't realizing how you should build a game around being able to switch classes. They should make the classes different in how they achieve their goal, make dungeons and bosses that some jobs may be better suited for because of it. Give damage element types, give bosses resistances, make the classes play differently.
Hell if you want a good and explicit example of "talent trees" really not working in XIV's context, Scholar and Summoner was a direct attempt at the idea. It heavily gimped Scholar and consigned Summoner to forever using books.

I personally don't think splitting abilities to magdef and def actually addresses the problem which is that one objectively best tank sucks when the goal is tanking, even if it's at the expense of theming and class flavor
I mean they still use the elemental resistance debuffs, to make sure you can get hit by multiple effects but not the same one consecutively (eg p9 and p11 tankbusters) it's just that players can't interact with it themselves.
It WOULD be cool for there to be a variant way of handling it with setup like white mage being able to apply wind resistance and red mage fire resistance so if you have both of them in a party, the tanks don't need to swap
Then we move back to the issue with job preference as people would whine that X job is mandatory for X encounter and now they need to run a raid twice as long to gear different jobs for each role, or run alts.

FFXIV as we knew it is over. All the old guard has already moved on. Yoshida, Soken, Koji, Maehiro, Ishikawa, none of them are even working on the game anymore. The setting is totally wrapped up so they can offer a clean slate to the new era of writers. The game will get less and less attention, patches are already getting spaced further apart with less content added. The peak of the game came and went, so just understand and make peace with that. I'm still gonna play and enjoy it as long as I can, but my expectations are gone.

Even Yangxia was ugly and that's supposed to be the verdant part of South China that inspired fricking Pandora in Avatar. So, no, to me XIV does not qualify as an MMORPG, it is a singleplayer final fantasy game that charges a subscription to allow you to potentially play with other people but that feature is never needed to do anything in the game aside from minigames.

If DRK just gets Enhanced Unmend III for lvl 100, it will actually be over. I put up with it in stormblood, I put up with it in shadowbringers, I put up with it in fricking Endwalker, but I will lose my beans if we actually don't get fricking ANYTHING. DRK is being fricked over on purpose at this point.
You'd be right for most content in the game, the people b***hing are in fact being childish, but funnily enough it does matter for the 0.01% that do things like TOP.
We ran a non "meta" group without things like a NIN and DRK and the DPS checks were ridiculous, a low crit run was enough to cause a wipe.
Except that's not the case because in 90% of fights with any DPS requirement, it's probably an EX fight where you'll need to be at least doing half your potential DPS to contribute anything and anything above that you'll need to be on top of your game
Tanks need this more than DPS, the amount of crying everyone does over having a non-optimal tank pair is fricking unreal >tanks combined make up a sixth of party dps >highest avg and lowest avg is like 200 when we're hitting 10k >people are shitting and pissing their pants saying DRK is now dead and needs a rework
tank players in xiv are usually just dps shitters who couldnt cut it as actual dps so its no wonder they get a bruised ego over the tank they play doing less damage than the rest
Well, DRK players are a specific breed of moronic because their job used to be poorly designed and when it was fixed they complained so hard about it the devs had to keep simplifying it. The tradeoff is that the job for the past 5+ years has been either #1 or 2 in damage and has (still has) the best mitigation among the tanks.
What you are seeing now is DRK finally being moved down the DPS charts and they cannot handle it, they are little babies.

Unga tu bunga >Dark Knight (HW, must actually be in the expac to unlock it) - Great job story, bafflingly stupid leveling experience ("core" ability, The Blackest Night, isn't gained until *level 70*, DRK starts at *30*) but gets OGCD attacks and lots of them >Gunbreaker (ShB, lv. 60) - Ninja/Dragoon in a trenchcoat literally. Job trades some raw defense for a silly weapon and a more involved GCD + OGCD burst-phase than the other tanks

i haven't mained a tank job until endwalker, before that i used to tank roulettes some extremes in endwalker and stormblood
now i started with drk back then because berserk and it was fun
right now i started with war during abyssos but switched to drk because drk is similar to warrior but has a lot of advantages and is good for downtime and fun to optimize, i think you'll be doing the same rotation forever as war whereas with drk you sometimes can optimize your mp build/spend but it's mostly the same
i now play drk and gnb and mostly gnb for unoptimized scenarios such as not having enough raid buffs or if i think it's better for a fight, ultimately i think of it this way
drk - very aesthetic, feels good to optimize both in damage and mits, benefits a lot from knowing the fight so when you prog always keep in mind optimization
gnb - same as above except the rotation is very fun imo and heart of corundum is just too good, i've saved runs with aurora and that
gnb and drk are my go-to for ultimates
war - fun to play, specially if you like managing timers, very strong in a lot of ways and you'll always be expected to main tank, very boring to optimize
pld - the only time i played this class for a while was in stormblood and i hated it, right now i can see why some people like it
tl;dr just go for the one you find the most fun to do their rotation and the one you like visually the most
DRK = big pew pew every 2 mins, you're essentially made of paper without a healer
GUN = big pew pew constantly, you're made of MDF
WAR = you're big, you're dumb, you don't know how to talk or think but keep pressing buttons and you hit shit and heal
PLD = your dps is weird, can be good, can be bad, you better learn what you're doing, but you are completely 100% immortal, no healers? you're the healer, and you can protect others and have the last cool skill from old game that wasn't removed(yet) to appease casual morons, shield bash, meaning you can distribute stuns to all monsters and their mothers as if you were a black man pouding single mother's c**ts
I'm surprised there are people who find the void story mid, it's pretty par for the course as far as mid expansion patches go. They have always been mid and if you think otherwise you're outing yourselves as shadowbabbies that never reached the point of having to get drip fed content before.
Stormblood was waiting 6 months to find out that black rose was slightly closer to being unleashed (it never was), and SHB was watching beg luqq very very slowly figure out how to construct soul vessels while running errands for eulmore.
I'm still mad that there's some character exclusive moves throughout the game that aren't even old scrapped stuff. Some of the Blades in Bozja do special versions of Samurai techs if I remember right, Mewlyb or whatever still has her 100% unique dual handguns animations, and I'm sure there's several characters that have job-style uniques rather than personal uniques like Raubahn's inexplicable bull rage inferno.

Last two expansions fricked up hard by explaining too much of the underlying lore of the world/shards.
The setting is done at this point. Everything is wrapped up, every conflict is resolved, every mystery has been answered. They're basically just giving the team a blank slate. Everything from this point on is XIV-2.
It pretty much killed my interest in the game since there's no real mystery left, especially after raising the stakes so fricking high in a near jumped-the-shark moment.

ARR cross class just wasn't as satisfying when normal battles aren't something you even have to think about so the usage of said cross class system is relegated solely to boss encounters, which in 2.0s WoW style, the only thing that really ended up mattering is dps. There's no real levelling process in ARR since fates were just zergs, leves were gutted, and dungeons gave the best xp so any cross class option that wasn't either "reduce damage taken" or "increase damage dealt" is ultimately useless and could've been refined into a interesting futureproofed system.

This "argument" has always been moronic in any multiplayer setting, because the reason you will be kicked isn't because of blind metagays, but because killing a boss with 37,000,000+ HP while you're doing attacks with a peak DPS range hovering around 80K where a single fricked up mechanic can reset the entire encounter means that failure punishes every single person present, and insufficient and inferior DPS in these cases will provide dramatically more opportunities to slip on mechanics. Making a character who is explicitly and mechanically provable to be inferior to another just because you prefer a different color to your fireball than the other one is completely fine in a singleplayer game where the consequences of your meme build only affect you, but when there are 7-23 others who will all feel the impact of your decisions, it's something all of them will opt to not deal with going forward.

It's the fact that every single job has only one way to play it, there is zero build customization, no talents, nothing. Worse you're even locked to a single weapon-type per job.

Both of those are irrelevant complaints about aesthetic choices. If you want to see what Tank-Turned-DPS looks like, play with Irregulars in Eureka/Bozja, where the focal shift can actually provide some degree of interesting gameplay, but ultimately is nothing more than a retooling of those jobs.

Adding an entire layer of elemental resistances and weaknesses to raids would invalidate this anyways. Making some kind of Firaga mage who gets bonuses to Fire damage and Fire procs and Flame Damage boosts would immediately need to be cycled out the second you encounter Ifrit, and considering how almost every single boss in the game is represented by one of a number of elements, you'll routinely find yourself incapable of doing anything without either leaving or changing to the "job" needed here.

Having talent trees would be fricking awful in XIV. They work in games like WoW specifically because they're built around you having only one class, so it's a means to give you variety. You can be a paladin to heal, hurt, or tank but you can only be a paladin. The game is built around this, which is why you cannot change classes freely.
The issue with XIV is that it isn't realizing how you should build a game around being able to switch classes. They should make the classes different in how they achieve their goal, make dungeons and bosses that some jobs may be better suited for because of it. Give damage element types, give bosses resistances, make the classes play differently.
Hell if you want a good and explicit example of "talent trees" really not working in XIV's context, Scholar and Summoner was a direct attempt at the idea. It heavily gimped Scholar and consigned Summoner to forever using books.

FFXIV as we knew it is over. All the old guard has already moved on. Yoshida, Soken, Koji, Maehiro, Ishikawa, none of them are even working on the game anymore. The setting is totally wrapped up so they can offer a clean slate to the new era of writers. The game will get less and less attention, patches are already getting spaced further apart with less content added. The peak of the game came and went, so just understand and make peace with that. I'm still gonna play and enjoy it as long as I can, but my expectations are gone.

Well, DRK players are a specific breed of moronic because their job used to be poorly designed and when it was fixed they complained so hard about it the devs had to keep simplifying it. The tradeoff is that the job for the past 5+ years has been either #1 or 2 in damage and has (still has) the best mitigation among the tanks.
What you are seeing now is DRK finally being moved down the DPS charts and they cannot handle it, they are little babies.

xiv healers are probably some of the worst designed classes in any mmo ever made its unreal
it's more the fight design than the class design tbh they're fun in high-end content because you actually have to use every part of your kit to keep people alive

warrior, gunbreaker, dark knight, paladin. in that order from best to worst for your playstyle
Paladin stabs shit, casts magic, helps others, and can even heal. Plus it's the most Ganker job.
Gunbreaker is really cool, but frick I can not into No Mercy windows. Feels great when you can do a halfway decent one, buti get too jumbled easily.
I like all of them so

>Gunbreaker (ShB, lv. 60) - Ninja/Dragoon in a trenchcoat literally. Job trades some raw defense for a silly weapon and a more involved GCD + OGCD burst-phase than the other tanks

i haven't mained a tank job until endwalker, before that i used to tank roulettes some extremes in endwalker and stormblood
now i started with drk back then because berserk and it was fun
right now i started with war during abyssos but switched to drk because drk is similar to warrior but has a lot of advantages and is good for downtime and fun to optimize, i think you'll be doing the same rotation forever as war whereas with drk you sometimes can optimize your mp build/spend but it's mostly the same
i now play drk and gnb and mostly gnb for unoptimized scenarios such as not having enough raid buffs or if i think it's better for a fight, ultimately i think of it this way
drk - very aesthetic, feels good to optimize both in damage and mits, benefits a lot from knowing the fight so when you prog always keep in mind optimization
gnb - same as above except the rotation is very fun imo and heart of corundum is just too good, i've saved runs with aurora and that
gnb and drk are my go-to for ultimates
war - fun to play, specially if you like managing timers, very strong in a lot of ways and you'll always be expected to main tank, very boring to optimize
pld - the only time i played this class for a while was in stormblood and i hated it, right now i can see why some people like it
tl;dr just go for the one you find the most fun to do their rotation and the one you like visually the most
DRK = big pew pew every 2 mins, you're essentially made of paper without a healer
GUN = big pew pew constantly, you're made of MDF
WAR = you're big, you're dumb, you don't know how to talk or think but keep pressing buttons and you hit shit and heal
PLD = your dps is weird, can be good, can be bad, you better learn what you're doing, but you are completely 100% immortal, no healers? you're the healer, and you can protect others and have the last cool skill from old game that wasn't removed(yet) to appease casual morons, shield bash, meaning you can distribute stuns to all monsters and their mothers as if you were a black man pouding single mother's c**ts
