Being able to have AI that can make real mistakes is as much an advancement as one that can play flawlessly and answer every player's move.

No idea. I just started playing Civ 5 and the Ai pathing was taking it the long way instead of walking up a hill. It would rather take 2 more turns to get somewhere rather than walk up a hill. Maybe it’s a realistic ai and it knows I’m lazy and wouldn’t walk up a hill.
That's a problem with the pathfinding, they assign a cost to each terrain type, the hill terrain must have a cost that is too high, they would have to take the movement speed of the unit and work out which path would take longer, this would probably be too complicated and slow.
I still see the ai in the “new” Age of empires 2 getting stuck in trees, wood cutting camps, and lakes.
Because image/text gen has nothing to do with pathfinding, navmeshes and the like.

You would see the ai run across the world past dozens of enemies just to raid you.
Game AI isn't scripted to learn. It just follows a set of parameters each time. I think FEAR might be the only game where they were allowed some form of thought.
FEAR's ai was actually really basic. What made it as good as it was was actually the level design.
Not really, they develop a new AI system that's still pretty impressive, GOAP.
Someone tested it and it was no fun. The Ai will cheese everything in the game like an butthole, while eating up all the framerate
Assuming you mean enemy behavior routines by "game AI" it's because enemy behavior and large language models have frick-all to do with one another.
Even if you did build out a kind of behavioral routine selector/creator from a LLM it's idiotic to put that extra strain on the GPU when you're already trying to run a game
cause most game "ai" is just behavior trees still, and no one puts effort in like mgsV (which even that could have used some kind of wide area patrol toggle to make the guards move more than 200m before giving up)
