This entire board is contrary to your thesis. But gatekeeping is good in games, every single franchise gets worse when it tries to appeal to wider audiences.
You can't gate keep when the developers make the game more accessible to appeal to more people. You don't need to gate keep when developers don't compromise.
I wouldn't say this is so catch-all. I've known people who get legit mad that you play games they don't like, or how you enjoy the hobby (speedrunning, trophy hunting etc.) or won't drop what you're doing to play a certain game.
In general though I'd say since gaming is a more seclusionary hobby people just do what works for them, and doj't give a shit about others, just enjoying games.
