Why is Grass so bad?

Shouldn't one of the starter types actually be useful for the main game?

What few resistances it gets, while not stellar, are still nice to have, and its offensive coverage is probably the best of all types. Bug is a better example.

Blame Game Freak's fricking moronation with how many Grass-type Pokemon were handled.

Meganium being a fully evolved starter Pokemon shouldn't be inferior in battle compared to NFEs. It fricking shouldn't. NO starter Pokemon should be outclassed by a Pokemon that hasn't evolved.

Proposal that doesn't involve weaknesses or resistances (to prevent screeching):

An accuracy boost for Rock-type moves only if used by a Rock-type Pokemon.

Grass isn't a bad type because there's a powerful support move that exactly 6 out of 67 fully evolved Grass-types are able to learn.

LMAO, just pick an actually good type and attack, bro. No need for support moves

All the gimmicks grass gets are just GF pity-buffing it for being a shill starter type. Otherwise Grass type has no redeeming feature aside from resisting water. Rock and Ice are at least good offensively

This is why "support" in any video games are a meme. Most supports are unnecessary and other stronger types can fill the support role just as easily if not better

Grass is unironically the best testament to there being competent people at GameFreak. It looks like crap at a glance but has genuinely helpful utility on nearly every team hence FWG cores.

everyone seems to forget that pokemon is/was a single player game and that types were designed around your typical RPG progression curve and not muh competitive. grass makes (or made) sense as a type that lets you hit a lot of early game wild pokemon you run into frequently, especially paired with poison. you'll never get hit with any bad status from a poison sting, you hit geodudes in caves pretty good, you hit most stuff you'll find while surfing pretty good, sometimes you'll suffer from pidgey but otherwise you could reasonable expect your grass dude to be fine early through midgame until psychic spammers show up.

pokemon's type match-ups was built around this concept of single player progression, which is why dragon has so many resistances (because it's a 'final boss' sorta pokemon). obviously things are much different now but the type chart hasn't changed much which is weird, but pokemon autists are a different breed and heavily resist change so what can you do at this point.

      Anonymous

Competitive autists are the ones defending grass type because it can work as "support" though

        Anonymous

        I mean, that's also a thing in single-player tho.
Grass-types gets access to all the powder moves and leech seed and you even have all the Mushroom mons that are exclusively grass and have access to Spore. Grass-types also have all the draining moves and things like Morning Sun and Synthesis.

Fire is about nuking shit, Water is all-arounders, Grass is for weirdos that want to be more technical in their single-player campaign. All of these are equally viable, except most people will choose quicker options, especially that battle system in Pokemon already is sluggish in comparison to other jrpgs.

    Grass has very subtle advantages
    >immune to powder moves, in a world where Spore, rage powder and Amoongus are so so prevolent in doubles
    >strong against Water, one of the most defensive typings in the gsme that are only weak to Grass and Electric
    >fire-water-grass is the most fundimental trifecta for adequate type coverage in the game
    >strong against ground, one of the better attscking types in the game, who's only other resistance is bug (lmao) and as well as it cant touch flying
Grass is a good situational defensive option and a good check to water for the most part

      Because

      Grass has very subtle advantages
      >immune to powder moves, in a world where Spore, rage powder and Amoongus are so so prevolent in doubles
      >strong against Water, one of the most defensive typings in the gsme that are only weak to Grass and Electric

Grass is a good situational defensive option and a good check to water for the most part

You dont always want to deal with the handful of weaknesses but you want to occasionally be able to deal with specific threats such as spore, grounds, or waters

Just as a type it's amazing defensively, and then when you factor in all the individual Grass Pokemon it gets even better. There's a reason Grass is the most common tera type. Most Pokemon are improved by becoming Grass.

Grass, Fire, and Water are the elemental types most prevalent to our world and serve as an easy to understand triangle.
Grass’s gimmick is status moves to harm the opponent combined with moves that boost the user. Fire is a hyper offensive type and Water is a defensive tank type.

Grass attacks aren't great most of the time, but they make up for it with Status moves like Sleep Powder, Leech Seed, Aromatherapy, and Synthesis. They also have some actually great moves like Giga Drain, Wood Hammer, Leaf Storm, and Energy Ball. You can't use a grass type as an unga bunga me click strong moves guy the way you can with a Fire or Water type.
