For serious critiques? His videos don't hold much substance.

I think the 5 minute format really helps. There's plenty of wannabe snarky (optionally British) youtubers who make these overly long rants about games. ZP is always short and well paced so it never overstays its welcome. That's not to say it's always brilliant or that yahtzee doesn't have some shit takes but the brevity stops his videos getting stale.

Maybe this just highlights how terrible other critics are but I generally find his vids to be more insightful in their short space of time than most literal who 2hr video essays.

You can be both you sperg. Just because you're not a dry, joyless c**t doesn't mean you can't say something serious from time to time.

          He actually:
          1. likes
          2. makes
videogames. That pretty much makes him the best most qualified reviewer of all time even if his opinions are garbage more often than not.

          >2. makes
This clinches it for me, almost nobody who talks about games has actually gone out and made their own and that really gives an edge.

I'm not saying that I think his reviews are serious, because obviously they aren't. What I'm saying is that in the competition for funny reviews he is really good, but for an actual critique of a game, there are other with more substance.
Not saying having only funny reviews is a bad thing either.

For youtubers that combine both funny but serious reviews, I would recommend Running Shine and Nerrel.
For only serious reviews then Matthewmatosis is probably my favorite of them all, if you ever played the new God of War then I encourage you to watch his video on that since it's my favorite. The Gaming Brit Show is also a reviewer that puts out quality stuff. NeverKnowBests is a good youtuber for CRPGs, so if you like that genre, he reviews a lot of games in that area.

              >Running Shine
My absolute favourite - I just wish he'd upload more. He strikes an amazing balance between detail and entertainment. I'll give Nerrel a look.

              >Matthewmatosis
I saw that he had videos on rain world and zachtronics games - and I'm a huge fan of both so I'm scared of watching his videos in case he turns out to be me from a parallel universe.

Thanks for the other recs too!

I don't think he actually does like video games. In fact the more I listen to him run his mouth in other videos the more he just sounds like kind of a jackass who likes a handful of video games that he feels makes him intellectual.

And while he's certainly MADE video games he's never actually made a GOOD video game. And his novels are kind of mediocre at best. Frankly it just seems like he lucked out in the early days of the internet and is coasting because he knows the escapist will crumple in a second if he ever leaves them so they pay him to keep their channel alive. Because seriously who else are people going there for? Jack from RLM? Hhah no.

Dont think thats true. Its easy to get that from the review but listening to the podcast does give you more insight into what he actually likes. He is aware that doing a review of an older game or more obscure one wouldnt necessarily make a marketable video so he ends up shitting on popular newer stuff instead

Yahtzee might be a fricking moron half the time but at least he is giving his honest opinion. Which when combined with the fact that he puts out a video every week on a consistent basis for a decade makes him hard to beat. Honest + Consistent versus an industry full of easy-come easy-go liars

      Anonymous

Oh yes. Putting out 5 minutes of power point once every 168 hours is SO impressive. Especially when he doesn't even finish the game most of the time. But you know I can see how he might be swamped with also having to do a live stream for an hour. You can really feel the work and effort.

        Anonymous

Well a work week is typically 35 hours. Play a game, writing a script, cutting it down and editing it, then making the video (which afaik he still does himself) is far from zero effort. Non-writers always act like writing is like working at a factory where you can just churn out words, it's especially difficult to write something funny - even if the end result is 5 minutes long. Why don't you try doing it yourself to see if it's as easy as you think it is?

game reviews are moronic to begin with so a harmless five minute skit that can occasionally make me smile is about the best anyone can do, certainly better than some fricking autist explain why thing IS BAD for four fricking hours

He's a critic, not a reviewer. He's not there to give you a rating, he's there to tell you what he thought about a game within the week he can play it.

    He is also a Chiegay.

Persona has better character development and story than 90% of Jrpgs. The gameplay isnt the part hes as interested in Im guessing

          Anonymous

He doesn't like/is indifferent to the elements of Persona individually but it's how each element interacts with the other elements in the game that draws him in.

It says a lot that despite his previous examples of favorite JRPGs being Earthbound and FF6 he played both Persona 5 and Persona 4: Golden to completion in his free time (completing Persona 4 around the time Bugsnax came out), and despite liking Persona 5 more he got the best ending for Persona 4 and has Chie as his favorite girl,

on the contrary, his old persona was an anti-SJW sexually frustrated incel alcoholic and it was hilarious. genuinely despising censorship and wokeness and saying Black person on his let's plays channel countless times. now he got married or some shit and moved to america, lost his edge and devolved into orange man bad

Yeah he's trying to make money. Saying 'Black person' on stream doesn't pay any bills, but if you look at every successful media company right now, appealing to current popular consoomers obviously does

Unlike every single other gamong reviewer, his videos are very short. And his content has been very consistent both in style and humor. He's not perfect, obviously, and he has some pretty moronic takes sometimes, but he's still very entertaining

      Anonymous

It seems the common compliment and praise he receives is that his videos are short and I don't think that's really as positive trait as you might think it is.

Well, he's fairly unique in that regard, other reviewers will stetch out their content until it becomes rambling. Yahtzee's videos never feel like they are too short, I think that's the key.
