Valerie is at her most effective as a meat shield who you send in first to draw the ai's attention but her charisma allows for a couple unique builds focused around intimidation if you go that route, and a more knowledgeable player might recognize to throw an int boosting headpiece to pick up the 13 int feat some fighters might want.
If you were to pick someone like Jaethal I'd be more inclined to agree that she can be a bit weird for someone new to PF, or Kallike/Kanerah if you're unfamiliar with how kineticist works. But Valerie is probably one of the simplest characters in the game to use

Most Baldur's Gate NPCs are built like shit. Most RPG companions aren't perfectly optimized. It has nothing to do with the AP, it's just fluff and roleplay. Not every character is equally competent at their job, and neither the AP nor the games are supposed to be played with autistic dip-mongrels.
Hell, chances are the 4 people playing any AP will almost always have shitbuilds worse than any NPC and still do fine.

On normal difficulty, you'll be fine with any class if you just stick to one class. I highly recommend turning off companion auto levelling and fucking read skill and ability descriptions.

It's a combination, and appearance doesn't have to necessarily mean you're "pretty". Good build but I like to use bard because she can tank/offtank unfair still, give you enough song and bard buffs for the main fights, and mirror image/haste is too good.
Simple as can be: 11 bard of your choice, 5 TSS, 4 Dragon Disc. I like Archeologist, some people like Dirge. Go bard 4->5 DD->rest bard and finish war. DD keeps your casting levels going so it's nice and gives you a big STR up.
The gay thing is you have to take your armor off buff, put it back on, but not an issue when you use singing mithril.
CoTW makes KM way way better, everyone should try it on their 2nd playthrough

Kingmaker doesn't have (almost) any connection to the story of WotR. At best you'll recognize some of the characters which are there in both games.
Turn based will probably suit you better than rtwp if you've played the games you've mentioned.
If you want simplicity, you literally cannot go wrong with straight 20 levels of fighter. Most classes have some use, there are some that are really fucking bad, but not in a way that you cannot beat the game using them. Just pick what you like and adjust the difficulty accordingly.

Pick Fighter, max strength, skip the weapon focus feat because you don't know what's good yet and equip the strongest weapons you find. If you really want to focus on one weapon type, you can't go wrong with longswords.

From minmaxing point of view, in case you're not dead set on roleplaying: don't bother with fast learner, your party can cover skill checks for you. Also start with 19 strength instead of 20 - only EVEN amounts of stats matter, and you get total of 5 stat upgrade points by level 20, so you can bring your main stat(strength) to 24. Making it 25 literally doesn't do anything. Start with at least 13 dexterity, so you can pick up dodge later on, as well as at least 14 constitution for an okay amount of hitpoints. You can dump intelligence and wisdom as a fighter. Charisma can be useful for cornugon smash if you want to go that way.
If you actually want to minmax, you should plan out your gear and choose your stats based on them. You're a poser. You go through all that trouble to minmax, yet end up not minmaxing.

You don't need charisma and need agility. Hover over the stats and read what they do. 8 Dexterity is literally +1 to all attacks from enemies and even most heavy armour can still give at least 1 dexterity bonus. Stats checks are done for the whole team.
