Because they’re hopeless weebs. Timing also matters, plenty of games would be criticized as “woke” if they came out today to this audience. With games from Japan, though, they would blame it on localization, even if the text is near 1:1 as is the case with Yakuza 3’s Ayaka plot.

      Anonymous

I will never understand the people who fall for the bait screenshot about Yakuza 3 being woke. You get to choose the dialogue option for whether you think it's too much for the guy they like, and yuya even jokes that Kiryu shouldn't lie about her when he mentions that they're trans.
The same game even has a substory of Kiryu running away from a troony while terrified.

        Anonymous

That screencap is shared around like AIDS in Yakuza facebook groups

        Anonymous

No matter what you say in the side-story, Ayaka ends up getting with the guy he likes anyway. The whole thing is painted as some wholesome affair. Then Kiryu can continue to be "serviced" by Ayaka at the massage parlor. If you think the Ayaka sidestory isn't pro-trans then you're coping hard.
The other troony substory? Got removed from the rerelease.
        >B-BUT THE LOCALIZERS
No, Sega of Japan made the decision to remove it. From all versions, Japanese included.

        Anonymous

Speaking as someone who has played both versions of the entire game, and this substory: for 2009, the Ayaka substory was incredibly well done. On top of that, she’s modeled after a real person, Ayana Tsubaki.

As for the Michiru substory, it was fairly harmful, however considering the mere quantity of substories, it was bound to happen that two contradict each other through different people writing different stories. Beyond that, a lot of language used by trans women in Japan are also commonly used by cross dressers, so it could have been mixed up in localization.

I think the safest assumption to make is Yakuza 3 is anti hon, but they certainly did not positively represent a trans woman, modeled off a real trans woman, because they hate trans women lol

It's both examples of blatant propaganda yet one is good and should be celebrated and one is bad and should be burned.
If they didn't bleat about being anti-propaganda all the fricking time in general it wouldn't be an issue but that's not the case here.

it isn't in fact games from japan are heavily censored when localized. Wouldn't be surprised if there was huge chunks of the game missing or huge lines of dialogue changed to make it "western friendly" AKA keep the people who don't even play games but read articles from "woke" gamers from screeching

      Anonymous

From what I remember, nothing from 0 is "missing". But I think Yakuza 3 remastered did remove a side quest, and 4 and 5 remastered removed the pachinko minigame, as well as the remastered collection being retranslated. Also a bunch of licensed music tends to be removed/changed in the Western versions of Yakuza games, but you can mod those back in if you have them on PC.
