Both of the Redfields are boring. Even Claire. I feel like I can't even describe both of their characters. At least Leon has shown a degree of personality, and him taking the bullet for Ada in RE2 has more characterization and speaks more about Leon as a person, than Chris has just sulking about "muh squad mates" for 3 games. He's one of the few characters in the series who feels like a proper character, a human.
Probably because Leon goes through the most growth out of all characters and we're there for basically all of it.
He starts off as the virgin police cop then to secret top flirty government agent. We also get to see his up and down love life with Ada while also having hilarious flirts with basically almost the whole female cast. He's probably the most human of the MCs. In RE2 - specifically RE2 Remake he's a pure-hearted guy with good intentions and a vulnerable side, women fricking love that in a man.

There's one issue though - as far as character development, personality and consistency goes for the main cast - he's one of the biggest messes in the series. Chris might not be as popular, but his characterization has been far more consistent and believable throughout the franchise and all of the games he's been featured in. I don't think it's strange at all. I think Capcom finally realized they severely undervalued character relevance and plot consistency with their older titles, and are now attempting to re-correct that with the Winters' trilogy.
They also had the opportunity to correct this with their old, classic characters through the remakes, but they already fricked that up by remaking RE2-4 first and fricking over the RE3 remake, rather than making them in chronological order. Then again, the older titles had very consistent, straightforward plotlines until 4 came along and fricked everything up.
Or maybe their push to remake 2 and 4 over the other older titles partially stems from the fact that they realize Leon is so popular that they're essentially replacing Chris with him as the face and main protagonist of the franchise for their third-person titles. If you look at a lot of promotional material like pic-related, that appears to be the case. It would explain why he undergoes the most dramatic personality shift in the remakes, and why they appear to be doing something completely different with him in the upcoming RE4 remake as well.

I honestly wish he talked more in cutscenes and less during gameplay. The times where he stays silent such as during the meeting of the Lords and Mirand in the church or when the Dimitrescu daughters and Lady D have him in their clutches felt out-of-character. In RE7 Ethan would actually kinda talk to each Baker before doing their areas and boss battles. There should've been more segments of Ethan getting called on phones in the castle and factory from each Lord leading to them bantering at each other like the Salazar and Saddler video calls in RE4.
It was really disappointing how little interaction Ethan had with the lords he only actually had a conversation with Heisenberg really. Especially with Dimitrescu since they used her house as the main advertisement like here. Hopefully Rose will be a bit more chatty in her DLC and future game.

In RE2 - specifically RE2 Remake he's a pure-hearted guy with good intentions and a vulnerable side, women fricking love that in a man.
Meanwhile in RE4 he is peak alpha chad and always keeps his cool with jokes, something that men admire and aspire to.
There's one issue though - as far as character development, personality and consistency goes for the main cast - he's one of the biggest messes in the series. Chris might not be as popular, but his characterization has been far more consistent and believable throughout the franchise and all of the games he's been featured in. Meanwhile, Leon goes from naive do-gooder rookie hero, to corny quipping action hero with zero issues from the Racoon City incident, to a sudden, PTSD-inflicted, alcoholic edgy butthole in 6. Also his thing with Ada was fun at first, but has devolved into something that's cringeworthy as frick that detracts from his overall character. Hopefully RE4 remake fixes most of this. IMO they're going in the right direction there.

Name one character that was the MC for two mainline RE games back-to-back in a row. You can't because CAPCOM considers all classic RE characters to be interchangeable and disposable to the point that half of them disappear in terms of plot relevancy by RE6. Billy after RE:0, Jill for most of and after RE5, Claire literally gets saved by the ocean washing her up on a beach in REV2 instead of her brother saving her like CV implying he doesn't give a frick about her. Its sad how CAPCOM shits on them but what's worse is when they try to add "depth" to them which usually means making them depressed, downtrodden drunks which both Leon and Chris both went through.
Its really strange how much capcom is sticking to a continuous story for this Ethan or Winters trilology if they make 9 also about them. I like it but its a shame they've done it at the expense of other characters.
I don't think it's strange at all. I think Capcom finally realized they severely undervalued character relevance and plot consistency with their older titles, and are now attempting to re-correct that with the Winters' trilogy.
They also had the opportunity to correct this with their old, classic characters through the remakes, but they already fricked that up by remaking RE2-4 first and fricking over the RE3 remake, rather than making them in chronological order. Then again, the older titles had very consistent, straightforward plotlines until 4 came along and fricked everything up.
Or maybe their push to remake 2 and 4 over the other older titles partially stems from the fact that they realize Leon is so popular that they're essentially replacing Chris with him as the face and main protagonist of the franchise for their third-person titles. If you look at a lot of promotional material like pic-related, that appears to be the case. It would explain why he undergoes the most dramatic personality shift in the remakes, and why they appear to be doing something completely different with him in the upcoming RE4 remake as well.

It's natural to replace Leon with Chris since Chris is canonically in his 60s but Leon is in his 40s so he still can get another game or two.
The mistake was taking the hackshit story of pre-RE4 and trying to bridge it past 4, instead of just writing a different shitty B movie story with new shit characters that don't matter.

I honestly wish he talked more in cutscenes and less during gameplay. The times where he stays silent such as during the meeting of the Lords and Mirand in the church or when the Dimitrescu daughters and Lady D have him in their clutches felt out-of-character. In RE7 Ethan would actually kinda talk to each Baker before doing their areas and boss battles. There should've been more segments of Ethan getting called on phones in the castle and factory from each Lord leading to them bantering at each other like the Salazar and Saddler video calls in RE4.
It was really disappointing how little interaction Ethan had with the lords he only actually had a conversation with Heisenberg really. Especially with Dimitrescu since they used her house as the main advertisement like here. Hopefully Rose will be a bit more chatty in her DLC and future game.
