Apple goes out of their way to kill gaming on their ecosystem, be it through software (vulkan, 32 bit libraries) or hardware (ARM as stated above).

Shit support for the only graphics API available at the time (OpenGL), killing off 32 bit support, then replace OpenGL by an API only they support
i'd bet good money that half the minecraft player base is macgays that simply can't play anything else.
Two reasons:
1. Apple hates gaming.
2. When Valve decided to funnel money into a gaming alternative to Windows (max compatibility / zero freedom), they decided that Linux (less compatibility / max freedom) was the best choice, probably because MacOS (less compatibility / zero freedom) is just the worst of both.

PC means x86/64.
PC specifically means x86 with a Microsoft/IBM operating system and BIOS or a BIOS clone. Also "x64" is a marketing term that can be ignored. When referring to the ISA as a whole it is just x86. No x64, x32, or x16.
Apple game porting toolkit is just Wine + their proprietary directx to metal translation layer called d3dmetal
It's basically the same as on linux, but d3dmetal is currently worse than dxvk/vkd3d
This, it is nice but nowhere near as good as something like Proton.
Also because Crapple hates 32bit, any old 32bit games won't fricking run with it.
ill switch to apple the day they have something AS good as proton. i like linux and hate ms but i own an iphone so the "muh privacy" thing is kind of moot in my personal case

Which is a shame because I WANT games on Mac. MacOS is the only *actual* competitor to Windows. Linux is being propped up by Steam and has basically no userbase, but Mac is now second place and is now closing in on Windows

Sure, 5% isn't much, but it's still WAY BETTER than Linux at a teeny little 1% marketshare.
Why is this important?
Because MacOS should have all sorts of proton and Wine support by now because you can use the X windowing system on it. LIterally, Brew install Xquartz works just fine on Mac. With that, comes proton, wine, all the compatibility programs which do work on MacOs.
But it's still shit for gaming because of the walled garden garbage. Sure, being ABLE to run proton doesn't mean it runs it very well. It's just Mac is completely fricked by Apple's incompetence and as they've said before: they don't want their OS being a gaming platform. They want it to be pure productivity/hipster bullshit

linux has no userbase because up until quite recently, it was as bad for gaming as mac. now that its improving in this respect, the userbase is growing.
personally, i will switch to linux when
a) gaming is more or less equally supported as windows, including pirated games which i understand are kind of a sticking point right now
b) HDR is properly supported
c) nvidia/wayland incompatibilities are resolved
i don't wanna wager any bets on when that will be, but im guessing less than a decade. probably.

no thank you, its not 2004 anymore, i have a triple monitor setup and afaik X does not like those. something about VRR? or maybe different refresh rates on the panels? or both?
also, i need good fractional scaling, my side monitors are 27/4k and the middle is 32/4k. again, iirc, X does not like that.
a) it won't be supported equally but it might work equally (it kind of does already with caveats). Kernel driver anticheat will never work
c) should get a big improvement soon with the next driver and explicit sync. there's still a long way to go in terms of nvidia linux performance but things are looking up
